Good luck on your new venture

A camera that has spent its last 8 years in a loft that you don't know the name of isn't going to inspire confidence in any potential model. If its in the loft and you don't know what it is means that you haven't used and you dont know how to use it or if it still works, maybe the batteries have leaked or are no longer available? Digital SLR's were in their infancy 8+ years ago if this is older you are going to be struggling to keep up with modern kit.. If its a film camera all the better but the hassle of putting negs on to digital outweighs any advantages of having film. Most of us use USB memory to transfer images these days CD's aren't worth the hassle.

Who uses CD-s these days, most of use use USB sticks to transfer images.

Been doing photography for years.. Used a cannon at one point and that broke and went for one from argos.. Ex took that when she left and at the moment just using my samsung galaxy s2 to take pics on the go.. So u proffessional but thats because i aint.. I wanna learn how to use a camera.. I have all my dads equipment and it will be such a shame to let it lie there in the loft gathering dust.. Its about £3,000 worth of kit and very proffessional as my dad used to do all the airshows.. Whether or not im any good its out of respect to follow in my dad footsteps and carry on from what he left..

Now, now. Let's not be judgemental. People deal with grief in different ways.

You have film developing equipment - so do I, I haven't used mine for years either, there is a reason, film, cost, time.

I can shoot 4x5 rolls of 35mm in a couple of hours, the most I've shot in 3hours was 900+ pics, some were on the BBC news website within 6 hours. So by the time I had my pics on the web you'd still be processing contact sheets to see what you'd taken.

Do you see the problem?

Yes I still have my 35mm SLR but I also have a EOS 40D and an EOS 7 D with various L series lenses and my 35mm never sees the light of day and then there is the 20meg compact too.

You need to go digital

To be fair there's a difference between the needs of somebody selling photos for a living and somebody starting a hobby.

Unless you're in to the idea of developing though, you maybe are better picking up an oldish dslr that's compatible with the lenses you have - then you get to make the most of your dads gear but with the convenience of digital.

I am personally not getting at you and I feel for you in these sad times but yes any hobby use what you can but if you want to market your services even for free, in photography people really will only take seriously digital.

However I wish you well.

Rabbit, at the end of the day you do what you want mate.

People will give there opinion but it's not law.

If photography is a hobby you enjoy then go for it and I get that using your dads old cam is sentimental in away.

Enjoy lad

You know what.. it's not about the camera that takes the photograph, it's about the image itself.

Think of a gallery full of amazing photos. Are any of the photos emblazoned with 'taken with a nikon, or taken with a leica', or just taken by someone instead.... yep no-one gives two hoots about the make of the camera, only the image

You can have the most raggedy old single lens reflex camera going (one that's been in the loft years is no less valid as the ones I own that are probably just as old or maybe older - it's *still* capable of taking shots at an outstanding resolution far in excess of any digital sensor because no matter how many megapixels there's always aliasing.

If you want to piss on any DSLR, shoot medium or large format and have the negatives scanned. They'll still be loading the RAW whilst you're cropping the contact sheet

Enjoy! working in a darkroom is a beautiful pastime.

Photography is a great pastime, I'd stick to landscapes and enjoy using the kit rather than stress with what others might want or expect.

Good luck!

The pier you took the photo from is named the Brighton Pier. Locals and people who know it still call it the Palace Pier as it has been know that all my lifetime and before. The owners knew better though. Where the West Pier (the burnt relic) is - there is due to be an observation tower built called the i360. Essentially it's a large doughnut that rises over 190m on a 4m spindle. Been planned for years but due to start soon. Good luck with the photography. I used to have a Canon AE1 35mm SLR that I took many photos abroad as well as my son. I took it to Cash Converters last year when times were tight and got

£30 for it. Digital is the way to go as others have said.

We've just started getting prints done, amazing what you can get now for reasonable prices and it's nice not to have them all hidden away on hard drives.
