So iv not bin away for yrs now n I am finally goin away in 4 wks to Tenerife. I maybe goin alone. Just wondered how many of you go away by urself . Do u enjoy it or miss havin company

I love it.

It's a chance to switch off, to explore things on my terms and eat when I want and do what I want. Don't get me wrong, I love going away with others but I like that chance to recharge and just be me.

In the past people have said "Oh it would have been so much better to share that with you etc" and while it's a nice sentiment, I think I'd rather just have that time to me. Hence me booking Italy (albeit not quite solo).

Enjoy Tenerife OP! If you work out what you'd like to do whilst there, even if you're alone you can make the most out of it and enjoy it.

I went abroad by myself and loved the freedom to do what I wanted when I wanted.

Yes, there were random moments where I wished I had someone to share that moment with me but mostly I loved the freedom to explore.

since i split with girlfriend I've been to Lanzarote for a month and to Dorset maybe 10 or 11 times I'm happy in my own company

I often travel abroad alone. Its amazing. I truly love it.

The peace, the freedom, doing whatever you like. I often find I'm treated much nicer and served much faster as a lone female. Also I usually make more holiday friends, probably because I go out of my way to chat with people. Big bed all to myself, bliss.

I've never done it for a holiday purpose but its definitely my plan and I can't wait.

I have friends that put on party weekenders away and I don't plan to organise travelling with and staying with friends in the same hotel or apartment.

Never been a follower to go where the crowd wants to go

Enjoy OP deep breaths take magazines or books that you like so while you are there you will still have something from home with you

It’s something I really want to try. Maybe 3/4 days somewhere abroad. I’m confident travelling on my own so that doesn’t bother me but I’ve never actually had that much time on my own.

I just love the idea of being able to do what I want and when I want with no plans or schedule. We just had a two week family holiday abroad with a teen and a tween. I didn’t find it at all relaxing as we were trying to keep everyone happy.

Visiting before I go and surrounding area. And make a plan on what I want to see.

The beauty of travelling alone is you are doing it at your pace. Relax and enjoy seeing how your mood takes you

If you are all inclusive, be cautious who you tell you are alone, as multiple older people kept feeling sorry for me and tried to include me, into things I didn't want to do. It soured the holiday somewhat having to either avoid them or keeping saying no thank you to them

I’ve found that I engage more with others whilst travelling alone (they approach me and I make more effort to engage others) because travelling as a couple makes you more insular and happier in just that company, also others don’t feel quite the same way about including a couple as they would do a single travelling alone, there’s more sympathy for being alone, strangers empathy and protective feelings and want to strike up a conversation to be inclusive..

Get a back tanning mitt!

It's kinda like a long scarf with handles either end and used to get fake tan on hard to reach back bits, but should work just as well with sun cream!

I have been going on holiday on my own for quite a few years now.

First time was a mistake as my mate had to pull out.

So I had two weeks in Bulgaria.

Really didn’t know what to expect having not been there before.

I found that I loved it.

The freedom to do what you want.

None of this”what are we doing today,where are we going to eat ect”

I just love the freedom of being on my own and just exploring.

And I came across a nudist beach and just went for it and fell in love with that.

Not sure I would have done it if I was with someone.

I have been away on my own 3 times, each time was to spend a week in Spain, learning more language and culture through courses run by various universities. I met and made friends with people from around the world, who came on the subsequent courses too, and so I've acquired a multinational set of friends and acquaintances. I really enjoyed my weeks away on my own, I was always busy and always had company, if I wanted it.

coach parties come to Torquay all the time and some people travel alone, the older generation are more inclusive of others i think, he'd have a great time

I used to always travel alone, gave me more options on what to do with my time and where to go.

Did a couple of coach tours as well though sometimes had to pay extra. Usually found someone on the coach to talk to.

Have been travelling alone at least 2 times every year for 5 years now.

Pros:

- You can plan the itinerary for yourself and cover all the places you are personally interested in

- Planning is made easier as you don't have to align holidays and work with others

- Gives you a lot of time to just forget everything and immerse in the place you are in

- Just randomly walk into any places to visit or to eat when you feel like it

- Solitude can be helpful especially of you are working in a high stress bureaucratic job

Cons:

- Loneliness does hit you once in awhile

- If you are not willing to stay in hostels, it is more expensive per person. After a age, I couldn't handle the idea of staying in a hostel with strangers. So the trips are now more expensive.

- Trips can get stressful if you also have to drive. I personally don't drive and prefer public transport or going on a group day trips which makes the trips even more expensive.

- Depending on where you go, safety can be a concern though.

You can get around some of the cons though. Avoid going to the room until it's time to sleep. Being in the room is when you feel most lonely. Keep your daily itinerary posted to someone you trust for safety.

I think everyone should experience travelling and holidaying alone at least once in their lifetime. It's actually quite liberating and as much as we're led to believe the world is an awful place there's an abundance of kindness to be found travelling solo.

You'll move at your own pace and do things in your own time. I'm sure in Tenerife you'll strike up a few friendships too if you're open to it.

I enjoy it, many do, so take the leap.

I have travelled and been on holiday many times with people and alone.

When alone there are the occasional times that I wish I was sharing something with someone.

When with person or people it fluctuates between occasionally wishing I was alone to wanting to kill everyone and never travel again with any one ever again.

So on balance travel alone is very good.

Remember travel and holidays alone doesn't have to be lonely . You can meet people and talk to them while there.

Have an amazing time.

My grandad used to do coach trips. He always made friends. He had some great fun on the trips.

When I was in Vietnam I did a 3 days cruise and pretty much the rest of my boat was an OAP tour group. They had all become friends on their trip, most of them were single but by the time I met them, you would have thought they were life long friends.

Ahh Op, I love travelling alone. I was forced to last year when I became single again. And swore I wouldn't let that hold me back. I've come back from a wonderful week in Ibiza recently. Hired a car, toured the island. I'm a big people watcher, so eating out etc doesn't bother me.

I'm off to Barcelona for a city break soon. Its pushing me outside my comfort zone. But that's what makes life exciting! Go for it!

I love solo holidays. I like the peace of it. I often combine a solo holiday with a training course, or massage workshop. Its a great way to meet people from your host country, and also be alone on my adventures .
