The cameras, which are triggered by a number of microphones, can pinpoint vehicles exceeding the 74-decibel legal limit as they pass by. Pictures of vehicle numberplates together with recordings of the vehicle noise are then used by local police to identify and fine drivers.

According to the research 6/10 drivers are in support of this new initiative.

Same theory as speed cameras to me, nothing to worry or complain about if you're not breaking the law

The noise limit only applies to cars registered from 2016 onwards. Thankfully. I’d be in trouble otherwise.

Good idea in principle but impossible to prosecute due to ambient noise. Recently sat in a meeting which included police officers and this subject was discussed and they gave the answer above.

Well, the law has always been for the noise level when measured at half a metre away from the exhaust or less. I doubt the fixed cameras/microphones are going to be that close …
