Still no protective styles. We’re in Month 4. I’m too scared to see my family this week because they might cuss me

What does your hair look like currently?

Protective styles?

I cut 7 inches off a while back so its a messy long inverted bob that needs a good wash and some 40vol and powder bleach to blonde it back up

Manchester (she/her)

Been almost 18 months since I last had it cut. I think the ends are beginning to get a bit ratty, but given how long it is, I ain't mad. Right now I have a single plait down my back with skinny silk scrunchies. It's usually in a bun or a top knot, which I call white girl protective style (plait is protective too, but less so).

At the moment I'm erring towards moisturising ingredients over keeping it light, because realistically I need layers to stop my waves falling out, and I'm not getting layers, so I'm just minimising damage. Garnier Hair Foods hair mask is my idol. (I have fine hair, so I use banana rather than one of the heavier ones)

Oh. If you need protein for your hair OP (probably less for you because I know that the tighter the curl, the more you err towards moisture), the Shea Moisture manuka protein mask at Just My Look is almost double the size of the containers sold at places like Superdrug. I don't use it very often, but it is some magic shit.

Same as every year, I'm growing out my summer undercut and keeping my winter undercut, I have found a conditioner colour toner that works with my greys now, turning them blonde, so my full head dyeing days are over finally and I can embrace my older, brunette with blonde highlights days. Of course when the whole lot goes white, I'll be the purple haired granny

Yes. Fine strands but a lot of them. So it still ends up being heavy. If you know about curly girl technique (I know we owe a lot to Black people, particularly women, for these things), I have type 2b hair - diffusing, gel, and a bit of prayer, the curls that come out are between 2a and 3a (predominantly 2b/c)

Been out of hairdressing for 20 years so I'm old school, but know what you mean. Back then it was taught 'leave in conditioner' is the miracle worker for every hair type... how things evolve

I'm not sure how much of it is a proliferation of products and techniques because capitalism, but digging into it has helped me understand my hair - from won't stay straight frizzy mess, chop it off, to, I almost get curls and I actually like what my hair does (when I can be bothered)

Leave in is still vital - I also use oil on the ends after I wash my hair. (Lightweight oils for fine and/ or wavy hair, heavier for more textured and/ or thicker hair)

What are you doing with your hair if no protective style? Right now it's big. A curly, long, frizzy mess.

I'm trying to get an appointment for Saturday else I might say fuck it and just wear the curls to the social.

I'm getting mine cut on Friday, because my fringe is too heavy and the sides are growing randomly over my ears. I have to get it cut every 4-6wks, otherwise it's less of a style and more of a mop. I'm fortunate that it doesn't need much/any faffing to protect it though. I just wash it, brush it into the style and leave it. If I remember, I might scrunch some smoothening serum in. Then I fix it all with my fingers before I go into work/leave the house.

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

Mine is pulled back into a tight bun because I got sick of eating hair in the wind today.

It's about butt length and I might cut and dye it this week.

But I might not.

If your growing your hair, my advice is to wear a cap or hat for a year or so whilst it's growing...until you can tie it back.

I grew mine from a shaved head, years ago..(at one point it was knee length after about 7 years of not cutting it.)
