Unicorns and BBC

Excellent, you've fallen into my trap. Now let's get started.

Quick question: Is the term "Unicorn" to women, what "BBC" is to black men?

What I mean is a term that many of the people it refers to find derogatory, while others embrace it and revel in it. Similarly, those searching for said people see no issues in banding the term around, while other outsiders find it distasteful.

Just a Monday musing...

I think they may well be similar in the sense some hate It and others don’t mind it but I’d definitely argue that it’s unlikely that unicorn is offensive to some women in the same way BBC is to some Black men.

No, unicorn just expresses the rarity. BBC is a whole different kettle of fish that has been discussed at length. Some people HATE the term BBC so for this reason alone people should just stop using it. Simples really.

We have never and would never use either term and find them both very kind of, well, childish for want of a better description.

In our experiences, the people that describe themselves in those terms are not the kind of people we find ourselves compatible with.

Fair point. I'm not trying to draw exact parallels. I think it's more a person's immediate reaction to having the terms used about them I was interested in.

There would be no language left if we dropped terms because some dislike it.

There's also plenty of women who loath the the unicorn moniker, so using that same logic, shouldn't it also stop being used?

Dislike the term unicorn, but the term I loathe on here is being referred to as a snowbunny. Being reduced to one trait makes me feel crap and I won't engage with the message. Though I do appreciate some love it, it's certainly not for me

I don’t think it’s about not using it because some don’t mind it but I think people can use it when it is understood to be ok with the person rather than just assuming people will be ok with it. Same with the C word or calling someone a b*tch or slut etc. I would always make sure there was understanding that the person didn’t mind being called that before using it.

I don't fall under either so not sure how much my opinion would count on this, but I'd hate to reduce anyone to one trait and wouldn't want to sell myself to meet anyone based on a specific trait I have so I'm not a fan of the labels. But it's also not my place to tell people who do revel in it to stop even if it does continue to push any existing narratives.

Technically yes, but unicorn can be applied to anyone that is "rare" in their combination of appealing traits.

I'd want to know what are their actual reasons for loathing it?

Because while they are valid in their feelings and it can be considered objectification (well it is), it still can't really compete with the racial fetishisation that is connected with the BBC label.

Either way the problem is some people loath it and find it offensive having that label attached to them in that way, and some embrace it and use it to their advantage while also encouraging it's use by others.

So long as the latter happens it doesn't really matter what the former want, other than having the label not be used for them after informing others they don't like it applied to them.

Yes absolutely though there isn't the same history behind it. We have dropped many words that are seen as offensive and look we still have a language left. Tada.

But in the same point some women love the term and use it proudly as their username, it's not a term for me but I accept some like it some don't.

Life is too far gone to just see everyone as human. When people see me I want them to acknowledge and consider how my race may impact me and how words might offend me. And I treat other minoritised groups that way too.

But people on here always reduce themselves to one or a few traits.

Are you looking for a BBC for your snowbunny? (Common message we get)

BBW, redhead heck even what accent you have threads.

The ones where that's all they care about is their 6 pack.

I think we all intentionally and unintentionally try and emphasise our unique selling point on here, so I guess it's to be expected.
