Justifiable expenditure or a touch of government hypocrisy…

“Austerity Britain all in it together”, hasn’t stopped thousands of bottles of wine and spirits being enjoyed at British government functions.

Champagne to gin, a total of 4,651 bottles worth £55,679 were d*unk from the government’s wine cellar between the start of April 2011 and the end of March 2012.

.

That includes 138 bottles of champagne and 78 bottles of gin. French wine was the most heavily consumed drink, followed by English wine.

.

The wine cellar under a London mansion contained 38,090 bottles with an estimated market value of just under £3 million pound, according to a report.

It supplies wine to functions held by departments across Whitehall as and when required.

An internal review in 2010 found the cellar was providing value for money and was the most cost effective way to provide wines for government functions and state banquets – albeit that a recommendation was made that its should move to a self-financing regime by selling off valuable bottles.

The foreign office, which has responsibility for the cellar, updated parliament this week as recommended by the review.

Foreign office minister Mark Simmonds highlighted how the wine cellar has moved to a self-funding regime by selling 180 bottles for £44,000.

.

Other government departments put in £10,519 while new purchases amounted to £48,955 in 2011-12. New buys included 53 bottles of champagne and 82 bottles of gin.

Anyway my point is ,,,, I don't drink alcohol, so hy should I be paying towards a round of drinks for them !!!.....

You might not drink alcohol but many do and we certainly don't want to look like poor relations when foreign dignitaries visit us. What do you suggest giving them to drink, water?

We want them pissed so they'll sign lovely new contracts benefitting British business.

Yeah in principle that’s a cool plan….. but most of the dignitaries from cash rich countries shouldn’t be drinking alcohol anyway,,,, and the Chinese contingent can’t hold their liqueur without sounding like they are speaking a foreign language,,,

Yeah and we wouldn't risk offending them by saying its a bring a bottle party or you can't come.!.

But here I am being expected to cough up towards bottles of champers for our lot to drink....... .... its a bloom'in cheek I tell ya.... whats wrong with few tinnies of larger or cider,,,eh!

House of Commons are currently looking to employ a barista to work in one of their subsidised cafes.

As one person aptly tweeted:

In any other form of employment, drinking on the job would be frowned upon. No wonder the country is fucked up with d*unk people in charge.
