Apparently this will cut drink related deaths by a third.

Do you agree? Would you be happy to pay this?

I think it'll kill the pubs off as more people will buy from supermarkets.

Glasgow

Minimum pricing 45 or 50 pence/ unit of alcohol is supposed to cut drink related deaths but there doesn't seem to be much (any?) evidence of this.

Worse, the additional profits go to the retailer - not the Exchequer.

That said, will 30p on a pint across the bar really put people off? I doubt it.

Here here.

It's already like £3.20 a pint in some places.

Although don’t drink alcohol….

I’m great believer in targeted schemes that penalise the offenders rather than milk the wider public under the guise of allegedly providing a deterrent for those who are prone to abuse the privilege of being able to afford a relatively inexpensive recreational pleasure….

I find it hard to believe someone will cut down just on adding 30p a pint. Even someone having 10 pints in a night will only be paying £3 more.

A pint in a pub in London can cost £5 or more. I think the issue is not the "on" trade but the "off" trade where you can buy mountains of booze for next to nothing prices. I fear that another tax on pub prices will be another nail in the coffin of an industry already on its knees.

It's fucking bollocks but to get round it, just start drinking in a pub that was 30p cheaper for a pint in the first place. That's unless you're a regular 8am drinker at Wetherspoons, in which case you're fucked!

newport

1 the smoking ban

2 the price of alcohol

3 the price of taxi's home due to fuel price

So who's best to blame the government for all of this, so wont stop drink drivers at all but will close more licensed premises, and taxi drivers scrapping the barrel to make a living

Eh? Which London pubs do you drink in? I go down there at least twice a year and never paid that, even in the 'posh' areas.

If its specialist stuff you're talking about then it won't be far off up here!

It wont work. Heroin addicts dont think "oohhh this is illegal, I mustn't do it" when they shoot up.

Drinkers who are hardened alcoholics aren't likely to quit because of the cost either, just find other ways of funding their addiction.

Moderate drinkers will just suck it up because as someone pointed out, even if you go out for a night and get hammered, it will only moderately increase your expenditure.

It's attitudes to alcohol that need to change in the proportion of our society who have a problem with it...

There's no point in punitive measures, which people just rally against.

Hey don't blame us! its not our fault and yes we do have a local pub here but like we said as we have our own home bar we would rather stock our own from the supermarket than line the governments pockets anymore!!!

Well I would take those supposed projections with a pinch of salt as those who drink will sill do so for the sake of 30p. It looks more like a potential tax rise to me with a "its good for you" tag attached.

Hiking prices has never helped the people that suffer when morons think the message somehow doesn't regard them and neither do bans. It just makes the majority suffer for having their liberties reduced.

Tell you what though, d*unk or not I would like to run the PM over and then reverse over him and then repeat. Gobshite. I cant afford to drive. Dont shorten my three hours drinking a week I can afford with my friends!
