Eating out alone

Are you comfortable doing so?

I've done it a fair bit, but usually when I'm in other countries. If I do here it's usually just lunch.

I'm planning on taking myself out for dinner tonight... Might try and get myself a bit tipsy so I can take advantage of the situation.

Yep. I have done working away or on a solo trip somewhere. I really enjoy it! I can order exactly what I want (normally some sort of cheese and a garlicky dish) without feeling sorry for the poor sap sitting across from me. It's great for people watching.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, far from it actually. It's nice to have that time to me. And I love food (evidently).

I fucking hate doing anything alone but have done work work many times.

It's not so bad with phones to be fair but I still wonder if that couple over there thinks I've been stood up

The good thing about eating with someone though is you get to order loads and then try everything.

Not a massive fan of it but don't mind it for say breakfast or at a café. People watching can be fun but do get a bit of FOMO seeing others laughing, joking and living life in all its rich tapestry with each other

When I was cabin crew I did it all the time. As long as I had a book to read I really enjoyed it. It seems a bit indulgent to do nowadays as it would mean leaving B and the kids at home.

Some restaurants are more suited to it than others. Nothing too romantic or aimed at big groups of friends, that feels a little odd.

Hope you have a lovely meal and treat yourself to a pudding!

I’ve done it with work loads. It’s a nice experience as I don’t want to sat in my room alone for hours. Sometimes in restaurants with other solo diners you can strike up a nice convo.

The good restaurants will know to pace well because it’s different pacing when you don’t have a someone with you.

I'm afraid I'm not. I really wish I was but I've never had the confidence to eat alone, especially when I've had to stay in a hotel for work; I end up dining in my room.

It's the same for Fab socials: I'm not good with the 'Billy no mates' scenario and will usually hang around outside until I see someone familiar with whom to enter the bar with, or just turn up with a friend.

As a travelling gent with work I’m often dining alone.

I take a book and often end up chatting with staff and fellow clientele. I’ve never had an issue with my own company but do find that these spontaneous conversations are often joyous.

Carlisle usually

I tend to prefer eating with someone else, but mostly because I like getting multiple nibbly bits rather than a main course and we can get way more variety if there's more people to feed.

I've eaten out alone a few times, it's nice to have peace and just people watch sometimes. But it's not something I do often.

Not in a proper restaurant. Mainly because I can't be bothered to get dressed to go out on my own; I'd rather stay in and eat chocolate.

I've had a meal in a Beefeater on my own when I had a few hours break on a hospital appointment. I'd only eat out alone if I were already out and fancied something nice.

Due to various reasons I am in no way a foodie and my tastes are standard. Hence I have no issue eating alone as most friends have different tastes.

My main meal is usually lunch time as when I prefer to have it and often in the pub alone, often with a paper or book.

Pretty similar for me, I am happy doing anything by myself and wouldn't let a lack of company stop me. Dinner, concerts, events etc.

Not a failing at all - don't see it that way.

If you want to just try it a few times.

If you don't want to or are not bothered it doesn't matter anyway.

I'm happy in my own company and happy to eat out alone. Done so many times in the past when single and/or traveling. I enjoy nice food, drink and service and see no shame or embarrassment about earing out alone.

I remember being away on a works course in London about 15 years. I was going out for dinner when the male colleague who was attending with me asked if he could come. We were on rates for food and supplementary expenses. So we left the hotel to find a nice restaurant. We asked for a table for two and they placed in a beautiful part of the restaurant. They came over a put a candle on the table (no one else had a candle). They were smiling a lot at us and insinuating things (in a lovely way). It was clear they had got the wrong impression about the nature of our being out together. I believe they thought we were on a first date. To be fair 15 years ago that was a fairly progressive attitude and quite sweet how they tried to make it romantic. I didn't say anything but the other guy was a traditional Protestant Northern Irish lad and when he clocked made sure the waiter knew the score (or maybe the lady doth protest too much). The waiter was very apologetic and we got a free drink out of it. Anyway that was a totally umessecerary cut away.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I have eaten out alone a few times and have actually really enjoyed the experience.

There’s no pressure to talk or have the other person ask you a question at the most inconvenient moment I.e when you’re busy chewing(!) I blooming well hate it when someone waits for you to load a glorious gob full into your mouth before then firing off an invariably bloody daft question!

I couldn’t think of anything worse than dinning on my own… the conversation would be so boring to say the least… like someone else said I’d feel people would think I’ve been stood up and all eyes would be on me.

But on the good side (and in a nice way) reading some people’s responses to this who come across as super confident but would find it a struggle shows I’m not alone…

Do it often with work.

Some one recently showed me the way to improve it. Ask fellow solo diners if they want to share a table and have a random conversation and not stare at their phone for an hour or two. It often leads to a better dining experience
