Walking 300 miles

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

So I'm doing a 300 mile hike cross country, I have the route planned out and all of the essentials I'll be taking with me, appropriate gear and attire, supplies etc. I'll be leaving tomorrow but I'm looking for some last minute less obvious advice i.e. self inflicted injuries, how to prevent/treat them etc., if anyone is experienced with long distance hiking. I've already mapped key locations along the journey such as service stops for things like charging my devices and taking rests.

It's not something I've ever done before, I've done a lot of long distance walking in my life but the farthest I've travelled is roughly 20 miles. I'm not doing this for charity, mainly doing this because I'm making some changes in my life and I want to challenge myself, but also to prove that I'm not a coward which a couple people close to me seem to believe and that I can't undertake such an endeavor. And so I know that once I've reached my goal that it was worth it in the end.

Or am I just crazy? *Shrugs* maybe.....

Thanks, good to see you around too

And that's fine, I've prepared a lot for this and I've been very methodical with this, it's a big undertaking and I don't want to endanger myself with forgetting things like having a map. Just looking to see if anyone can provide some obvious tips

Sounds awesome tbh.

I have no advice apart from the obvious - decent socks and footwear!

Hopefully there will be someone more experienced in that kind of thing around to help.

Sounds like a challenge

Keep your phone charged up every chance you get (cafés etc)

Going over fields etc spray around the bottoms of your trousers and shoes with fly killer it knocks out things like ticks etc

If you’ve never done a lot of big distances before, putting some Vaseline on your feet and wearing two pairs of thinner socks inside your boots can help prevent blisters and foot rub.

The right place

Take lots of compede blister plasters. Look after your feet. Stop and prevent any hot spots before they become proper blisters.

Prevention is better than cure.

Nail scissors to keep your toenails short and moleskin is good to put on blisters or where your feet rub.

"How long do you reckon it will take?"

Well when I first looked it says on Google maps it'll take over 4 days however that's assuming I'm walking non-stop. Factoring in rest stops and taking alternative routes I'll likely reach my goal by Monday/tuesday

Yes I'll be alone, don't have any friends, not close by anyway, I'll be taking a spare phone for emergencies and sticking close to civilization, I'm very aware of the dangers hence why I'm not going to far into wilderness to avoid danger

If you do 25 miles a day (which is reasonable) it’ll take you 12 days.

I too used to do hiking once a week. First time could not sit down for days.

Survival kit

Sewing kit in case of buttons

Tweezers for splinters if touching rough wood

Germolene for bites

Water refreshing spray

Mints

Torch.... Good music and batteries

That's what Google says when I tell it to use footpaths. And I'm assuming it uses average walking speed which iirc is 3 miles per hour, then again I'm a fast walker. But again Google isnt taking into account rest stops. But however long it takes it doesn't matter, it's about the journey not the time it takes. Besides I think I can cover 35-40 miles in a single day, took me half a day to do 20

I wish you well.

I've ran a few marathons and the tip about thin socks inside your hiking socks and vaseline is a good tip, as is having good tunes.

500 Miles by The Proclaimers might be appropriate at times.

You'll experience some tough moments, and to get me through such things, I think about those poor people being stuck in basements in Ukraine with no food, water, heating or electricity.

Last but not least, why not add everyone who posts on this thread as a friend and we can be updated on your progress and give you encouragement!

I have a 50 liter military backpack, in terms of supplies I'll mostly be carrying protein bars and water, larger meals will be eaten at rest stops. I'll have minimal camping gear, bare necessities. It'll be a manageable weight and I've carried heavier before, but a tip a buddy of mine who served in the US army said "tight is light" in reference to proper stowage of gear

Id say don’t push yourself

If there’s no time limit walk till you’re tired and stop regularly.

Only pack the essentials, start on a good breakfast

The best way to avoid blisters are good prep

Dry socks, foot powder, and tighten your boots regularly to stop rubbing.

Best one though for feet is spray dressings Elastoplast do a good one

Spray your feet with this in a morning where your boots might rub.

Let it dry before putting your socks on and if your boots do rub. It’ll rub that off before your skin.

I’ve walked miles in my time. With stupid amounts of weight of long distances.

Also distribute your weight in your kit

Women are better with the weight lower on their back and across the hips.

Guys wear the weight high on their shoulders.

Oh and enjoy it.

Good luck mate hope it goes well and I hope you keep

Us all updated.

Not entirely, I did 20 miles in less than 6 hours, I worked out that a walking speed of 4.5mph I can cover 45 miles per day, 2 hours worth of breaks in between, and 12 hours rests each day, if I can make more progress without getting too tired on any given day, it'll take even less time and be able to go further

It is doable but not without building up to it..

Plus the calories you’d need for that are high.

The old military test was 8 mikes with 25kg in under 2 hours

You’d expect to use around 2500-3000 calories in that time as 4 mph with kit is in the high aerobic workout

That’s a lot of calories to take on board. And carry

If you do 25 miles a day (which is reasonable) it’ll take you 12 days.

50-60 miles per day is pretty manageable, depending on any weight you're carrying etc

At 4mph, eight hours non stop walking is only 32 miles.

I think 50-60 miles is a bit ambitious.

15 minute miles.

4 miles an hour.

14 hours walking - 56 miles.

10 hours rest.

I'm just guessing here as I don't know what I'm talking about.

And carry "

The CFT was piss easy though? You'd just chat shit to your mate for 2 hours, wasn't even a test. I'd have an apple before it, and there was always at least 10 people still pissed .

But yeah, different environment if it's newish to some.

You're lucky if I do a mile walk in 20 minutes

Biff

Downhill, I can maybe manage 15 minutes. Uphill? Knocking on 25 minutes with screams of pure frustration.

(don't worry, I actually love walking)

F

You'd be surprised!!

What would I be surprised at?

F

The distance you could cover fuck my life F! You been on the piss AGAIN!? "

I can do like 10 miles in a day and I am spent. After today I think I need a drink or two. Instead I think some sleeping tablets, ear plugs and my bed will have to suffice

Thank you and lol that's fine no harm, 300 miles is more manageable plus I also have commitments that I need to attend to on the 21st, so I have be back home before then, public transport will be taken when I go back home.

Not entirely, I did 20 miles in less than 6 hours, I worked out that a walking speed of 4.5mph I can cover 45 miles per day, 2 hours worth of breaks in between, and 12 hours rests each day, if I can make more progress without getting too tired on any given day, it'll take even less time and be able to go further "

OP if you haven’t done anything beyond 20 miles I would be absolutely amazed if you could sustain that pace for more than a day. That’s not meant as a slight - just that it is a very sustained pace.

If you do pull it off then I would suggest you go for some ultra marathons because that pace would probably win a lot of them!

I would honestly suggest you reconsider your timelines.

This is a wonderful challenge. I’ve done 200 miles in 103 hours, but I had people taking stuff for me at rest stops. I don’t think I could carry everything.

Factor in really high calorie foods. Only take things you’ve tried before, there is nothing worse than getting a sore belly on new foods. Take rehydration tablets, you will sweat way more than you expect to.

Consider chafing. Quick dry clothes help. There are at least a billion chafing gels, creams and balms out there. Check them out chafed groin and chafed nips are next level torture.

Good luck and have fun

Don't worry none taken, I've worked out over the years and the time I've spent walking, I'm a fast walker and can hold that pace for long durations, in fact the time I covered 20 miles in less than 6 hours was when I.. sort of.. went off the rails a little and went missing several years ago. I hadn't eaten, I didn't eat, and I wasn't prepped for it. I've also very often walked 4 miles in an hour while carrying a backpack.

I couldn't do marathons though, at least not for running, I'm a sprinter not built for endurance but all the time I spent walking with heavy loads meant I can keep a high pace when walking and don't tire so quickly

"So I'm doing a 300 mile hike cross country, I have the route planned out and all of the essentials I'll be taking with me, appropriate gear and attire, supplies etc.

*Shrugs* maybe....."

Good luck - “Saltstick Fast Chew” tablets every half hour, with a good handful of jelly babies. Got me through a 70 mile race.

Thanks, and I'll be looking to focus on eating protein bars, chocolate, meal deal pasta from services when I take my longer breaks as I won't be carrying too much food to keep the weight down. No walking poles either, a good sturdy stick worked for our ancestors so that'll work for me if I need it. Got a good pair of walking boots though

If anything I'd say concrete roads would be better to avoid rubbing when the foot is angled on uneven terrain, but that's just an educated guess I'm interested to know if anyone can correct me on this. Have you ever walked 50 miles in a day ? And then done it again for the next 5 days ?

You’d have to have done some serious training beforehand to keep that up. 20-30 miles is def more realistic if doing it day after day.

I suggest you walk 10-15 miles a day..... Average walking pace on flat ground is 2.5 miles per hour . So 6 hours on flat ground will give you 15 miles per day. But remember you need to enjoy yourself and have a break, take in the scenery.

It's okay vanilla, I'm very aware that I won't be able to hold a pace of 4mph everyday for 10 hours. This is simply using previous experience, knowledge of my body and mathematical analysis to roughly judge the timeframe and distance covered per day. They're not arbitrary targets, just estimations

"s wales...to penrith... you are aware that it is a very hilly route right? "

That's why I'm avoiding walking across the brecon beacons, I'll be heading to Gloucester first, then start travelling north. Rather than walking in as straight a line as possible I'll be taking the more efficient route and sticking to shallower terrain. It may take a little longer to walk around a big hill/small mountain but it'll require less energy

" Or am I just crazy? *Shrugs* maybe....."

You asked the question and people who've done similar endurance activities have replied.

We think you're being unrealistic. Mr KC can walk at incredible speed, for considerable distances. But he thinks it's totally unrealistic to suggest completing 300 miles of hilly terrain in 4 days. This from a man who can cover 0.5 mile in under 5 min in a morning, with a backpack on, in a suit.

I didn't say I could do it in 4 days, I said that's what Google maps says and that's assuming I'm walking non-stop without breaks. If I were able to manage 50 miles per day which is a stretch, the whole journey will will be completed by Tuesday. Finishing by Monday may be unrealistic as lately I keep thinking it's a day or two behind, it's almost Wednesday yet I keep feeling like it's still Monday (last couple weeks have really dragged for me). I never said I can or will do it in 4 days, I'm allowing for time to be added on for rests and slowing my pace. Realistically I can safely assume I'll arrive at my destination by Thursday at the latest

If I could add my 2p worth on the time/distance discussions, based on my experience; I've run multiple ultra-marathons, with distances varying from 40 up to 100 miles.

It always takes much longer than you might imagine, because the time taken for food/drink/toilet stops, for checking directions, for navigational errors, for medical stops eg applying blister pads, stretching all adds up to a considerable amount.

That's before you take into consideration the effects of fatigue, and how that reduces your pace.

If 20 miles is the most you've ever walked before in a day, then even 40 miles on day 1 would be a real challenge, and you're probably looking at ~12 hours. Day 2 onwards will be tougher, and slower.

That said, I totally admire your courage and determination to get this done! It is possible, but you need to be prepared to be pushed way beyond what you thought your limits were, both physically & mentally. I wish you the best of luck.

In terms of practical advice; pace yourself, don't push too hard too early, and don't look too far ahead. It's only ever about the next milestone, whether that's the next overnight stop, the next village on the route, or even the next road junction.

As so.eonce once famously said, if you "just" keep moving forward, you'll inevitably reach your goal eventually

Sadly lot of what you say is talking out of your arse but its good you set your self goal I always wanted to walk from john groats to lands end .so when the oportunty came up to walk from Glasgow to London and raise money I took the opportunity .it was fun at the time but regretted it ever since but I didn't get to plan the route some asshole who proberly has never walked anywhere in their life did.

you haven't listened... you once walked 20 miles quickly.. but you haven't trained... you'll do very well to man@ge 10-15 miles a day. i did 190 in 9 days on the c2c, buti walk a lot.. and it was still tough.. be realistic

Make sure your boots are properly broken in. New boots will rub in no time. Walking on tarmac is rough on feet, knees and other joints. It pisses down constantly here in the North so expect to be freezing cold and wet and miserable for all of it. Wet clothes, socks and shoes rub more than dry.

Remember, it's probably better if it's nothing like a race. Let your body and mind settle into it gracefully.

You've thought of your feet, which would be first priority to me.

"you must have finished now... any updates?"

No I got as far as outside Manchester but I had to turn back after I received some very upsetting news about my ex yesterday. Caught the first train out this morning.

I was really enjoying it, made a lot of good progress, averaged roughly 30-35 miles a day. But I couldn't keep going and needed to call it off, I'm devastated. I'm hoping to try this again some day but for now I'm just not in the headspace to keep going.

I'm still proud of myself for getting as far as I did in just 6 days, but unfortunately it now has to wait when I'm feeling ready to take it on again

I took the A473 near where I live and headed between caerphilly and Cardiff as I know the area here and knew I could make good progress, then a little south of Cwmbran. Headed more north-east to ross-on-wye, Worcester, kidderminster, Telford then Crewe.

Some of the A roads were a bitch to get pass due to the traffic and lack of crossing bridges.

I couldn't walk in a straight line as that would've taken me over the Welsh valleys and rests stops where I could charge my phones were fewer and far between.

I got to several miles outside Manchester yesterday when I called it for the day before I got the bad news.

Thanks, but I didn't really walk on concrete though, I maybe only walked a couple dozen miles on concrete and that was mostly in the towns where I was making my rest stops.

Concrete was actually a welcome sight sometimes when I got tired of walking through muddy patches and thick uneven grass. My feet are achy but that's just from so much walking.

"How long do you reckon it will take?

Well when I first looked it says on Google maps it'll take over 4 days however that's assuming I'm walking non-stop. Factoring in rest stops and taking alternative routes I'll likely reach my goal by Monday/tuesday

Four days!!! Are you sure?

If you do 25 miles a day (which is reasonable) it’ll take you 12 days.

50-60 miles per day is pretty manageable, depending on any weight you're carrying etc"

"Not much advice for you as I've never done anything like that. I'm guessing as long as you've got somewhere planned where you can get a good sleep and rest up, and comfy walking boots. And a good waterproof coat!

I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you enjoy the challenge.

Thanks, it's a shame I don't have a personal camera for taking pictures, I'd use my phone which is obvious but for safety sake I'll refrain from using my phone save for checking maps and emergencies. But it'll be a good story to tell nonetheless

What about taking a battery pack which are quite small and inexpensive to charge your phone in case of emergencies?

I'll be taking another cheap phone with me only to be used in emergencies which is cheaper, takes less space and weighs less than an external battery pack"

So use your proper phone to take a few pictures a day for your memory sake and to update us

Given the distance you are covering and the recent weather changes, take some iodine for the inevitable blisters and the possibility of “trench foot” from your feet being wet with sweat or rain.

Prepare for all kinds of weather - keep clothes light but there’ll be times when you’re tired and hungry the temperature in your body will drop.

To have the motivation to do that length of walking every day is a complete mindset. It’s easy to do something for one day but to be walking for 40 plus miles every day is very different!

Listen to your body…fuel up a lot! You’ll be burning calories galore!

Oh and on safety…it’s much safer in the ‘wild’ than in towns - I’ve never met another axe murderer in the wild

Stop and appreciate the scenery - being alone in nature makes you realise how small and insignificant we are and thus makes our problems small and insignificant too

"So I'm doing a 300 mile hike cross country, I have the route planned out and all of the essentials I'll be taking with me, appropriate gear and attire, supplies etc.

*Shrugs* maybe....."

What a great idea. I’ve not done anything that big , I think 5 days was my biggest then I ran the N3P, Y3P and the C2C a few times

My essential kit includes an old Nokia 3310, Jetboil, exped Downmat. Biggest piece of advice would be ditch the boots and walk /climb in trail shoes. You will get string flexible ankles and reduce your weight. I always aim

For 10Kg max on my back too

There’s lots of ways to tackle c2c , I’ve cycled it in 2 days 158 miles sleeping by the side of the road and also walked it in 10 days with the kids going off route to bnb’s
