Clinical drug trials

Have any of you ever taken part in medical trials?

Just signed up to a company, the trial I was interested in is full, but they have spaces on another residential one.

Anyone have any experience of this kind of thing?

My ex husband used to do them. Some of the single guys used to do them for up to three weeks at a time residential, they had a unit for it at the hospital they worked at. The residential three week ones used to pay a fortune about £600 and that was getting on for 20 years ago

I remember a residential drug test going badly wrong a few years back. So like the previous poster research the company well. I'm sure following that incident safe guards have been put in place but I would make sure your fully aware of what you are undertaking and what you are signing.

wasn't there a nasty incident a few years ago. one blokes head blew up like a watermelon.

The one I wantes to do was unto heartburn relief... quite simple and safe. The new one is 3 grand payout but requires two week long stays, thought about it and although the cash is very tempting, I cant take that much time out of my studies.

Maybe something will come up in the summer.

I have taken part in medical trials, but was to see if different treatment worked better on a certain illness. Mine worked ok so I can't really complain

I to have taken part in them for 6 months in and out of hospital blood test every week but the drugs are now in use and the work I take them 3 times a day for my illness if it was not for drug test there will be no cures

I did a 2 week residential drug trail paid a lot of money, obviously there's risks there but I was fine

Depending on the nature of the trial and drug(s) to be tested.

If it is for efficacy comparison using licensed medicinal products, as in comparing like with like to see which one is better in terms of side effects and effectiveness in treating the disease or condition, then go for it.

However, I would be very wary about participating in a clinical trial of new drug entities due to potential side effects that have not yet been identified/detected in animal studies, especially potential effects on the reproductive organs and the central nervous system.

What happened in Northwick Park Hospital a few years ago are rare, however, serious side effects can still present themselves unexpectedly.

In general, the more money they pay you, the riskier the drug(s) is to your health.

If something does go wrong, they will wave a paper claiming informed consent about potential risks have been given, la di da.

Don't do it unless you are prepared to possibly die or something. I remember when I was at University and there was ALWAYS requests on noticeboards for such things. I toyed with the idea once when low on money, as did most I knew and some even actually did it, but then a news story broke about two guys dying, think they were also students. Most people who go to these things are desperate for money, pretty saddening!

My line of work...

Find out how many people have been exposed to the drug and what phase trial it is. Phase 1 means they know little about it, phase 3 means it is about to go to market, phase 4 means it's already in the market.

Check what procedures are involved, in early phase trials there are usually a lot of procedures and a lot of blood samples (OK if you're not needle phobic).

Read the patient information sheet carefully, it should list all the predicted risks. Take time to think about it.

It is a highly regulated environment but things can go wrong...

I am on a trial at moment been on it now for three months and get a100 a month and it's on for 18 months everything is okay at moment will let you no if I get a big head

disagree, a lifes a life and testing on aminals is wrong to me but thats only my opinion and not one many share

but besides that, as the poster above has already said, even if a tablet has been tested on a rat and the rat was fine would you be happy to take it knowing no other human had? how confident are you that a pill that works on a rat will on you?

Personally i think all medication should be tested on humans, its us that want to use it so its us that should take the risks

Yea done this years ago with a Leeds outfit called Covance....good money but be warned it's not as anonymous as they claim and it can follow you round for years on your medical records.

i'll believe that when i see it

The UK do not do animal testing but they fund many countries that do to test them for us, The biggest animal testing lab in the USA is funded by us, as far as im comcerned we test on animals

Yes I realise there are risks... the one I wanted originally was just for heart burn remedies... testing gaviscon and such.. the other one, after reading into it, is not for me, its testing how drugs work in bringing people off heroin. I agree that new drugs need testing on humans, under controlled circumstances, however this trial is not for me, even if I could spare the time from studying!

A lot of places in the UK do animal testing, and will for a long time, until alternate methods of testing are advanced enough to take over (a long way off).
