Somewhere In The Ether…

Whether it be as a result of the locomotion or else perhaps the lulling sound of the train itself, I invariably struggle to stay awake on train journeys.

Good folks; In direct relation to this, if you’ve even dozed off on a train, have you ever managed to sleep past your desired stop?

If so, by how much?

I’ll be awarding a special prize for whoever has overslept and subsequently overshot the longest

Not me but I know of a chap that regularly did, and often woke at the end of the line.

As a remedy he placed a sign round his neck, saying "Please wake me at Basingstoke"

He woke up at Portsmouth, to find someone had written "Ha Ha" on the sign!

I remember the first time I had to commute to London regularly for work, I would always fall asleep on the morning train

One morning I was thinking to myself “omg who is that snoring on the train, it’s so loud and so annoying”.. it was me snoring

One morning I was thinking to myself “omg who is that snoring on the train, it’s so loud and so annoying”.. it was me snoring

I remember once, one guy was snoring really loud on a train I was on (not me this time - honestly) and someone jokingly shouted at him to wake up. He subsequently woke up with a start; The look of shock on his face as he jumped bolt awake was priceless

I have a few times but only for 6 miles or so. And missed the last return train, so couldn't get my bicycle

Happens to a mate regularly, he’s going to Harlow but ends up at stanstead airport. Tried post it notes on him etc. no one helps.

I fell asleep on the train commute home when I was in my early 20s. I must have been dreaming I was being attacked and I awoke suddenly after receiving a huge blow to my head, in the dream (might have been a bit of rail turbulence). I immediately woke up and was furious and staring directly at this old gentleman, who was clearly shitting himself at the rage and manner in which I awoke. It must have took me a few momeyto realise it was a dream before I calmed down, tucked my tail between my legs and got off at the first stop (which wasn't my stop) to avoid the shameful glances.

Lesson learned to stay awake, or not eat cheese before sleeping!

London

First night out in London after I moved down. Was living in Dartford, and after a night in Central London, got the first train out of Charing Cross. Woke up in a blind panic, no clue where I was. The announcement came on...approaching Lewisham. That's fine...until "this train is for Charing Cross".

I had slept through from Charing Cross to Broadstairs and was heading back into London. Got off in the rain, crossed to the other platform, got in the Dartford train and promptly fell asleep. This time, someone woke me up at Dartford being the end of the line. In the end, took me around 3.5 hours to get home when it should have been around 45 mins

Here ...

My mate used to fall asleep all the time and end up at the end of the line which was 40 mins from his stop. Usually the last train too so he would need to get a taxi home.

Eventually he bought a house at the end of the line ... true story !

Yes, was supposed to get off the train at Dundee (travelling from Aberdeen) slept through the the final stop at Edinburgh

Yes when I was eighteen travelling from London to Yorkshire. Managed to sleep until Edinburgh. I casually walked over to the other platform and got on a train heading south. Nobody said a word back then.

I had a meeting in York once got the train from Nottingham was having a nap when into the station and others around me, we’re getting off.

So I quickly got up, made my way outside, and then I realised I was in Leeds

Not a sleeping story but I know a woman who was travelling on a train to Firenze (Florence) When they arrived her mate asked her if they were in Florence.

"No, this is Firenze", was the reply.

Next stop was an hour and a half later in Rome!

I once overshot Derby by 25 miles to Leicester at 10pm after some drinking.

I had high hopes for falling asleep on a train last summer when I went to Edinburgh and beyond, but the seats hold you a little to stiffly to get comfy. I need one of those little neck pillows I think next time. Or go on the sleeper train, which I really want to do. I dont overshoot, I am an anxious passenger and stand up about 3 stops before mine just incase

High Lighthouse!

I try not to on the first leg of my journey. If I don't get off at Manningtree I could potentially end up in Norwich (an hour and a half up the tracks).

The second leg is fine, Harwich Town is the last stop.

couple, us we him her.

Yup many many years ago Xmas eve we finished work early at Heathrow airport , about 16 of us went to Windsor and Eton for a pub crawl,we had started drinking well early at work so was half leathered before even starting pub crawl.

Ended up very very d*unk late afternoon.

I'm not entirely sure what I was planning on doing but thought I'd get a train from Windsor home , subsequently fell asleep and woke up at I can't remember if it was Waterloo or Paddington either way the conductor was shaking me awake saying end of line,I asked where are we he said and I said I was going to Feltham!!

He explained some stuff I was too d*unk to understand and I guess he gave up and left me.

Dunno how long it was until I woke up again and saw the carriage packed with lot's of angry looking businessmen glaring at me as I was sprawled out taking up almost 4seats.

Some how I ended up getting home about 11:30 PM still steaming d*unk as I'd found my way to a pub.

Crawled into bed around midnight and woke up in time to get Xmas lunch the following day.

Been there, done that. Was woken up by a lady coughing loudly. Didn't miss my stop though.
