he crooked house pub in Himley has burnt down after being sold to an investor for “alternative use”

The fire brigade were unable to get close as the road was blocked

That or the alternative use only involved the location and not the building. Diffcult to put back like trees which get 'accidentally ' chopped down against planning permiission. Fines are generally paltry from what i've seen and no deterrent sadly.

I doubt anyone would have bought it to knock it down. It was a Grade II listed building. It was badly damaged by a break in just before it was sold, my guess is this was the result of another break in. A very sad day for all of us that had used the pub in the past and a big loss to the heritage of the Black Country

alot of heritage or listed sites are going to ruin left to rot.

instead of letting them change them so they can be better used.

i agree on the facia of the building being kept in keeping of the heritage and on some propertys even they internals want to be kept original.

but heritage need to stop expecting handouts or grants to keep these buildings whilst they let them sit and rot away.

then they can concentrate on doing up the proper buildings and having tours being taken through or have special weekly live the life in the past events to pay for it all.

ive worked on many heritage sites and one i do remember well was the american owners that have sat on there owned property waiting for these grants to come through.

also to note theres money grabbing people all the way down the line on any heritage owned property and they all want there share of the grant.

West Bromwich

Burning it down solves the problem .now they can build on the land .its a way of getting around building regs .like stated listed building need 2 be kept witch costs lots of money .scam all day long x

That can be blocked if deemed to be on purpose as it has already happened.

The land in question has never been built upon since it was burnt down.

Its happened in my area way too much they wanted to change its use and was refused so they burnt it down just to get what they wanted.

alot of these heritage home can run ballroom events of the past.

where the ladies get to try on these past clothes of different eras and dance in them even the t ladys can also be in an event of this type.

whilst the men dress up in there suits for the evening.

many places can run weekly live in the past

be the servant or the lady of the house or even the cook with many other users all being paid so it becomes a working heritage site that pays for itself.

none of them do this

Agree can be blocked then its stands and becomes eye sore .People complain .so eventually development get 2 build houses I suspect on the land ..if building was 2 badly damaged it will av 2 be demolished on safety grounds .x

Well it’s surrounded by a quarry on one side and a sewage treatment works on the other, so god only knows what they want to use the site for.

The smell off the sewage beds in that area during the summer beer garden months was awful .

It is a shame to lose such an iconic building and this definitely sounds like insurance fraud.

It’s dodgy as F. I said a couple of weeks ago, it will get burnt down in a few month. Didn’t realise they would have done so, so quickly.

Seems to be a common occurrence in the West Midlands.

Oddly enough near me we had an old pub who's owners wanted to sell the site to housing developers. But the council said the pub was key to the community and wouldn't grand permission for change of use. Then by magic the pub spontaneously burnt down. Then a legal battle. The council stuck to their guns(ish) and the site was bought for a mini supermarket and the owners of the site made a pretty penny. It was investigated but nothing was proven. Everyone local knows it was iffy.

I liked the Crooked House, I have memories with my Dad there as a youth. So this is really sad. The road block is perfectly plausible knowing the site. A large carpark and abandoned property down a secluded lane work be prime retail estate for Travellers. So it's a fairly normal measure with land like this. However the whole thing does look iffy.

Been announced the police are treating it as arson, and the council are also looking into why the whole building was demolished when it was only advised for the top floor to be for safety reasons
