I've been on it for acid reflux for 18 months now and it's a life saver I couldnt live without it. Only thing is I take 60mg a day it's the only way I can control my heartburn. This is a high dose and the GP offered me an endoscopy which I elected not to attend as you have to go for 2 weeks without the drug-I really dont fancy that at all that sounds like misery, I thought I'd do a bit of research first before getting the tube down the throat treatment. Does anyone else routinely take 60mg daily and if so for how long, any side effects etc?

60 mg is a high dose! As much as uts not nice i would take the endoscopy, and be careful with diet for those two weeks.

my mum has taken them since her stroke 3yrs ago which left her with no use in left part of body, she takes then to counteract the other meds she has to take. she is on a slightly higher dose and she has never had any side effects from it if that helps you,xx

I had the endoscopy but it found nothing. Manage it with ranitidine now high dosage which I believe is just as bad for you... Can't win lol

you can also treat acid reflux holistically with aloe vera - yep it's a magic plant, a healer and good for many ailments.

tablets, juice, or grow them on your windowsill.

60mg does seem high but obviously your gp knows best. I take 30mg of Lansaprozole a day for the same thing but my GP also prescribed Gaviscon to be taken 4 times a day. He told me that the tablets only weaken the acid but doesn't stop the reflux altogether & stomach acid coming into the oesophagus will eventually cause long term damage. The gaviscon puts a lining on the stomach and stops the acids from entering the oesophagus. I had the endoscopy to identify the cause of reflux. It was unpleasant & I was found to have a hiatus hernia

Have tried liquorice tabs cider vineger boiling ginger and every friggin otc under the sun but omeprazole just totally cures it in seconds. Its not the endoscopy that bothers me its the thought of 2 weeks of total discomfort hitherto. I mean millions of people take it so 60 a day cant be that unsafe?

Have suffered with reflux for the last 20 years but for the last 8 years have been taking Lansoprazole 30 mg a day and have really helped me did have a endoscopy and they found that my lower esophageal sphincter was leaking.Did have the endoscopy with out sedation but if i had it done again i would ask to be sedated.

You do have to stop taking it it says so in the info the hospital sends you. Hence dilemma-2 weeks of discomfort which may or may not be worth it depending on what the camera picks up.

I'm on 20mg a day and most of the time this controls it. However if it plays up I've been told to double the dosage morning and night so end up taking 80mg but that would only be for a few days until it was back under control. I had the endoscopy before I got the tablets but would understand your reluctance to come off the tablets for 2 weeks. I don't seem to have any side effects whether I am on 20mg or 80mgs.

I am on Lanzoprizole, which I believe is similar, I hadsimilar syptoms and was diagnosed as having a Hiatus Hernia, 40 mg seems to control it most of the time,but if I have problems was also told to double the dose, which I have done very occassionally, but this is only daily, NOT twice a day as some have said,

I would certainly say, leave off the medication and go for the Endoscopy, its not as bad as you think,

Would love to know more about alternative therapy tho.

Ive been on them for over twenty yr,started with a 60 mg dose prob had that for about ten year niw im on 20 mg but if it flares up i take more,i didnt have to come off mine before the endoscope but maybe things have changed.

Would advise going for it doing ,maybe ask the dr to see if you can lower the dosage for that two week,i tried all the aloe vera ,charcoal infact think i bought every know herbal remedy oot there andonly the medication works.Good luck whatever you decide.

I take 20mg a day, if I eat bread or pastries (which isn't often), I have to take an extra 20mg. If i miss a day, I can be in agony.

Didnt need to stop the 20mg for the endoscopy, so how about just lowering your dose? Speak to the endoscopy unit at the hospital for advice.

Ask you doctor for a blood test to see if you have the Helicobacter virus. I had this done a few years ago due to bad heartburn.

I was then prescribed a load of drugs to take over a week and this solved my problem of bad heartburn.

It is a virus that lies dormant in the stomach. It was discovered in the 1980's.

It is worth getting it checked out.

my daughter has this to take - also didnt have to stop taking any of meds for the endoscopy - but can see why they might as the drugs can calm things down inside and not give a true image of whats there

Another drug for the Dr to try is "Metoclopramide Hydrochloride" which is an alternative to Ranitadine or Omapezole I found the first two helped in smaller doses where the latter did not in 60mg

Personally I would say its worth it whatever the results are. If they find nothing or something, you and the doctor will still work together to help alleviate the symptoms and at least you will know one way or the other

I used to work in pharmacy a lot of people took this drug another name for it was losec. I never knew anyone take that higher dose. I would advise you to get checked out.

I take 10mg everyday and if it is really bad 20mg. I also had the procedure but can't recall not being able to take it prior to attending the hospital.

Me too! Been taking omeprazole for years. When I had m endoscopy wasn't given any instructions to cut down the meds. Just the usual don't have anything to eat from the night before.

I was on 60mg a day prescribed by the gstro doc. I had been having all sorts of problems and been back and forth to the doc for 3 months. Anyway got referred to gastro and he put me on that dose. Went to pharmacy and she said it couldnt be right so rang the doc who said only 20mg a day. Went with the specialist and took 60 which helped.

I had the camera put down and i had a biopsy taken and i had as someone else said Helicobacter pylori.

Horrible little bug that eats the stomach lining. Resulting in reflux. I had what they call triple therapy and got re tested and was fine.

To be honest it probably took me over a year to recover fully and it was the worst time of my life.

The test for this however can be done by poo sample or blood test i believe. My friend had it done at a chemist but think the test had to be prescribed to her.

I would ask the doctor to test for this before anything else. If for no other reason than to rule it out.

Google it though and see it is more common than anyone thinks.

I came of omeprazole as it made me feel really depressed and tearful. The doc said it was impossible it would make me feel like that but believe me it did, i now take esomeprazole and am fine on that x

I had terrible acid reflux for more than 20 years.

I tried every tablet available and tried cutting out obvious acid causing foods and drinks.

I put bricks under my bed legs to elevate me to try and stop waking up with acid all over me and pillow. I went down to 9 stone in weight at points.

I went on Omeperazole and it worked quiet well for a number of years.

Protein pump inhibitors are great and usually work very well for a period and can help with ulcers and helecabacta type ailments.

60 milligrams is a good dose you are taking and Omeperazole is not supposed to be a long term drug.

I've had 4 endoscopies and one up the bum what ever you call it :-/

I eventually had a pipe up my nose, into my stomach and was sent home for 24 hrs with a monitoring box attached to my side.

They told me I had an hiatus hernia.

About 4 months ago I had the hiatus operation.

They can do it by key hole surgery now days

So only have 4 little 10mm scars.

I sruggled eating for a while and lost about 2 stone.

Things are now fantastic!!!

NO acid what so ever, I can eat and drink what I like when Iike. FANTASTIC!!!

The operation does have some draw backs though so take that into consideration if you decide to eventually have surgery.

Hope that's of some help.

I am on 30mg a day and am having both he tests done -one for each end .Im having this next week and was told at pre op clinic that I must still take my dose even on the day of the procedure. I have that halocabactor thingy and despite 3 lots of treatment it wont go away

I think it's a very common condition, especially when you reach a certain age.

Sorry you're having a bad time of it.

Would modifying your diet for the 2 weeks help while your waiting for the procedure?

I gather certain foods can make the reflux worse, so avoiding them would make you more comfortable. However I am aware it doesnt totally prevent the reflux all together

My stomach lining was damaged Through taking Asprin every day for ten years and my ex had the same when taking prescribed painkillers but finished up addicted and damaged the stomach lining.

Took it for about a fortnight and it gave me the wild shites instantly and almost constantly.

I think the side effects list it as 'faecal urgency'

Went back to docs and they said it was a fairly common side effect and prescribed Lansoprazole instead.

They have been great

I`m on 40 mg a day too. I am able to split my dosage to even things out. I also am on asprin, lisinopril and simvistatin after having a quadruple by-pass. I`ve also had the dreaded camera up both ends as they found I was aneamic during one of my routine blood tests and found an ulcer in my asophogus and a hiatus hernia. The ulcer has now gone but they`ve said the hernia was unoperable. Still get the occasional acid reflux so I take two spponfulls of Gaviscon liquid. Works for me!
