"I have my own understanding but i'm frequently coming across it being used as a 'defence' and to put someone else down.. e.g. If you are not open minded enough .... or well you are not open minded ..... etc etc. What does it mean to you ?" The opposite to a fixed mindset , believing in the possibility that you can wrong about someone or something or can learn new things and change your mind. I would open minded people are more likely to be free thinking and have growth mindset too.

"Usually it means they're doing something that doesn't appeal to most people and using the phrase to try and make people feel like they're wrong for not agreeing with it " That's how it's used here at times most definitely

"It's an arcane term which often befuddles me, Grånny. My interpretation is that you are amenable to most things and will consider options/things carefully before deciding. I don't know. I'm sure you will have a consortium of varied responses." I'm quite comfortable with this ..... listening and considering before deciding. So having listened and decided and saying NO .... is the person still open minded ?

"I have my own understanding but i'm frequently coming across it being used as a 'defence' and to put someone else down.. e.g. If you are not open minded enough .... or well you are not open minded ..... etc etc. What does it mean to you ?" It means they want you to do something that would be considered weird by many people so they are shaming you in advance if you won't agree to doing it. A form of manipulation.

"I was referring to coming across it on here.... I think it has a completely different meaning to most on here. It seems they think if you don't indulge in a certain practice you are not open minded..... Surely they just mean 'you are not open to this ACT' ....... "

Open to trying new ideas, new things, open to others doing their stuff without judging, open to making changes, good point Op

I think closed minded people have words like always, impossible & never in their vocabulary, , that’s a sign.

So having listened and decided and saying NO .... is the person still open minded ?" • Yes, because they went through the whole process of ruminating the idea / options. If they hadn't been open minded then they wouldn't have entertained the notion to ponder.

"I don't know why a person would see it as a form of manipulation we all have our own minds don't we? " Because, like "don't be mean" or " calm down" are used against people who are neither being mean nor uncalm to try and make it a fault in them, oh you're not very open minded is used to try and shame people out of their prefences or choices too often.
