Gym advice - tendonitis

So.... I have googled inconclusively...

I have noticed over the last 3 weeks that on chest day when I am bench/dumbell pressing and on arm day when I am working triceps that i have weakness/discomfort in my left (dominant) arm. I assume it is a tricep issue but it happens/is felt in the outside mid section of my left arm.

Possible tendonitis? I'm going to have to rest it for a couple of weeks but am loath to do this as I have only had 1 week this year where i havent hit the gym 4 times.

Any advice on what this could be and how to help it mend fast?!

Get in the pool take the pressure off until it heals big up for hydrotherapy x

I love that advice tbf - swimming is great exercise - but my severe scoliosis means I cant really swim! (Long story)

If your theory is correct then it's an overuse issue, you also sort of endorse this by saying you always hit the gym 4 times a week.

Sounds like you need to rest it asap and go and see a physio. If it is tendonitis you don't want to make it worse as it can become much harder to heal. Worst case you could eventually rupture the tendon.

If it is tendonitis which I have had loads of from gym/BJJ. Rest is good but active rest. I trained just cut out whatever aggravated it. Ice is great, massage but not just the area but the whole surrounding area as tightness further up might be the actual root of the problem. Most importantly see a physio as they will tell you the exact problem.

Try Biofreeze? Resting would help, easier said than done though! Physio would be able to pinpoint what's wrong.

Interesting. Thanks all. Omega 3 trebled!

Prob is overuse etc... will cut out most tricep work for a few weeks and see if that helps. Annoying though.

Have a week or two off from upper body work and then stop doing the exercise that aggravates it. I get it from barbell curls so stopped doing them and it hasn’t flared back up since.

I can't remember the name for this type of injury but if I remember correctly the way to diagnose it is to hold a big heavy book in a pincer grip at arm's length and you will feel the pain in that exact spot.

It is an overuse injury.

OP I used to get this. I have historically had weak rear delts and struggle with complete range of motion to get my arms completely over head.

Recently I have been focussing on rear delt work and strengthening my back and have noticed that the pain in the outside of my Tricep area has diminished.

If your routine needs a shake up I'd recommend reading Brawn by Stuart Mcrobert.

Yeah it's tennis elbow if it's on the outside. I've had many gym injuries and best advice I can give is go to a good physio. They should have it sorted in a few sessions.

I was actually suggesting that weak rear delts, which connect to the scapula. might be causing a muscular imbalance in your the triceps through the triceps scapula connections.

Possibly but relatively strong on rear delts tbf. Unless its a genetic weakness at attachment points. Def seems to be tendons though

Yep ,sounds like tennis elbow/tendonitis. Get a physio on it quick , a few sessions of needling and excerises should sort it out in a few weeks

I have this problem as well. What works for me is to keep exercising the part but with the lightest of weights.... To keep the blood circulating and to keep the muscles moving. Some of those large elastic band things can help.... But do it all gently and don't be tempted to push the exercise...

As others have said, see a physio for the injury - hope it clears up quickly. But you should definitely have scheduled deloads in your programme - your body needs them! It will actually help your progress rather than hinder it.

You r body and is worth protecting at any cost. See a physio ASAP. Ice for acute issues and heat for chronic trouble relief. Don't try to force a very quick resolution. See a physio and follow their advice

Like others have said it doesn't sound like a tricep issue but rather tennis elbow.

This results in your brain limiting the power of the affected arm in order to prevent further damage.

At the stage you're at it's usually not enough to just rest it. Proper rehab is essential.
