Female Emancipation

I’m reading The Female Eunuch.

Germaine Greer claims that if you’re a fully emancipated woman (separate from men), you should taste your period blood, and if the thought disgusts you, you’ve got a long way to go

I’m a radical feminist, so the idea of eating my own period blood is just another Tuesday to me, but I’d love to hear others thoughts.

Yes or no?

I definitely do think it’s possible for women to be emancipated from men without eating their own blood btw, lol

Friendly debates only pls !

Germaine Greer is someone we read about in our politics class. I have a hard time taking her seriously for a couple of reasons.

I'd consider myself a feminist but she's very radical - for her, the goal of women's equality is apparently "profoundly conservative".

Secondly, and worse, she's trans-exclusionary having made statements like transgender women are "not women". Even the statement in your post demonstrates her thoughts on this topic.

Yeah I don’t necessarily agree with all of what she says, but our view’s definitely align in some places.

We’re definitely both radical and for female separatism, and definitely agree on a lot of sub-topics, but I don’t share her views regarding trans people.

Admittedly there are other feminist theorists that I agree with more, but radfem wise: me and Greer are on the same wavelength lol

I don’t understand the relevance of why you’d need to taste your own period blood to be considered an emancipated woman?

You don’t have to - it’s more of just a ‘you should be comfortable with your periods instead of hiding them’ thing

I should have added the context that this was in the chapter about periods and period stigma

I don’t think it's a big deal, no different than sucking a cock coated in your own orgasm I suppose? But I don't get why she thinks it's important?

Also hasn't she since stated she has changed her stance on a lot of her earlier ideals?

I definitely think you can be totally comfortable with your periods without having to taste the blood. It doesn’t mean you’re ashamed of them in the slightest. In a similar way that I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to say that I need to go for a wee but I don’t need to drink wee to prove it lol

I once sat next to Germaine Greer at a gig in Edinburgh in the 1990's (serious points if you can guess whose gig it was). I said "Hello!" and she said "Hi!" back. We spoke a few times amd Germaine was very funny, She wore cool ear-rings and smelled rather nice.

Do remember that Germaine developed, modified and adapted her beliefs and philosophy throughout her writings. The Female Eunuch was first published over half a century ago... try catching up with Germaine's more modern thoughts! "The Whole Woman" is a good place to go... from 1999.

By the way Germaine has recently moved into elderly care in Australia and has noticed that "more women are in care than men." Someone usefully pointed out to her that it was really that there were less elderly men alive (than women) to go into residential care because men die younger. The 'missing' men which caused such an imbalance in elderly care had all died. How sexist and inconsiderate of them!

I'm comfortable with periods in so far as I don't mind getting blood on my hands etc, I use a menstrual cup when menstruating so it makes a mess. Absolutely no yuck about that. But I don't want to eat it or lick it. I'm also not grossed out by peeing, for example, but I'm not going to prove it by drinking it, that just seems silly.

I'm actually very uncomfortable when having periods, to the point where I'm awaiting a hysterectomy and am currently in a medical menopause so I don't have any blood to deal with. Which I prefer - not because I'm grossed out by it, but because it's fucking uncomfortable

Emancipation? That implies that women are controlled by men and strips all women of autonomy unless they follow the rules of your own way of thinking.
