Bloody money pits...

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

Having a new bathroom done with gorgeous huge steam shower, plastic walls, new loo n sink, all mod cons basically...so have to have an electrician check out the wiring to the bathroom - turns out the original wiring was apparently done by Faraday and hasn't been touched since (maybe the writing on the fuse box being in Latin should have been a clue, V amp, XIII amp etc)

Anyhow, the lead wiring into the bathroom needs replacing (the Spark said to think hard about having the whole house done if I were thinking of decorating throughout), he's fixed the newer (badly done, unearthed) wiring to the kitchen extension (picked up by the gas boiler installers last week) and he's upstairs now trying to sort this lead stuff out -and that's before even coming to the new fuse box that's needed cos it hasn't got the required RCD or whatever the feck it's called...oh and the normal (illegal) switch in the bathroom that'll need replacing too (though to be fair, I did actually know I should have a pull switch in there - the extent of my electrical expertise!)

Ever wished you hadn't bothered starting something???

**Off now to find my Premium Bond certificates in case the work goes over the £5k I've just drawn on my mortgage

That was my budget for the whole bathroom...spent about £1700 so far, still need to price up and buy plastic cladding for walls, bathroom rad, accessories and storage bits and the builders reckoned about £2k for labour so hoping I should come in within the budget, but it's been a days work so far for the Spark and he reckons another day for the rest of the stuff so looking at £500/£600 or so just on the leccy...

You're right Nucs, someone up there has been looking after me for the last 13 years as apparently my cooker has been potentially live for all that time and there's no circuit breakers so it would have been a lethal shock if I got one!

I don't mind the money (well I do really) but kinda wish I'd left it till I was properly back on my feet but needing a new boiler kinda dictated timescales to me

And the thing with bathrooms is that they are covered under part P of build regs so now cost just that bit more.

This happened to my neighbour. They had a small extension built and had to add on some electrics. Easy... so they thought...

They ended up having to get the whole house electrics re-done, they had to move out because the plaster is horse hair original stuff that drops off in clumps if you so much as sneeze on it. Whole house had to be totally re-plastered, all new electrics, etc.

A lot of sparkies wont touch old walls as up to the late 70's they used to use bloody asbestos in artex / plaster so you cant even drill a hole for a rawl plug without risking a nasty death in 20 years time they end up putting plastic conduit every where

Have you looked at the Green Deal Initiative?

It won't suit everyone but it might help.
