Was life simpler before the internet?

Now your phone does it all, emails, satnav, google, diary, notes etc

Whereas we used to have a road map, post, the library, 1,6,9 and 10 o’clock news etc

We can even have virtual relationships with people all across the world.

Is there part of you that craves the older times.

God I’m sounding old

I used to love a hand written letter from a partner or my parents, now it’s mostly texts

It was definitely simpler. But the genie is out the bottle.

The technology has been beneficial. Just the social media addiction thats the main problem. Also I think its increased meaningless consumerism.

Technology has improved most aspects of life. Nostalgia is the only thing that make the good old

But don’t also forget with technology comes that potentially everyone is looking at what you’re doing

Now in some ways that’s positive. People getting caught looking at things they should not be…

In others how many times have you had a conversation or typed something in to the net and it pops up in every advert

Before web 2.0 if I decided to fuck off somewhere I shouldn't be (keeping in mind web 2.0 entered my world when I was fourteen), my family would have to call all my friends and hope they told the truth, hope I wrote something down, etc.

I can't imagine a kid of that age these days doing these things without leaving a digital trail. Way easier to find that child.

(I'm not talking about... stuff outside the forum rules. Just going missing. Yeah, it's a thing I did)

It's probably more simple with the fact you have Google at your fingertips to search anything, anyone, anywhere.

Do I think on the whole it's a good thing - no.

"Yes simpler and better "

Define better.

Because of the Internet I know far more about the world than anyone in my family that came before me.

I know and am friends with, and keep in constant contact with people from all over the world. Many of them in countries not even directly tied or linked.

Two of the most important and influential people I've had in my life I have known and met because of the Internet.

Simple for the sake of simple is bullshit, and simple is not always a positive.

Things before the industrial revolution were simpler still. Things before the international travel and exploration, likely even simpler than that. There is always something that ups the complexity of the world and with it brings advantages and disadvantages.

It was what we had Op. We got on with lives the way you describe. Phones alone were expensive and only BT had the monopoly. I had to buy bt cards to make calls. Mobiles were not even invented.

IT has evolved and I write the same in here or any media platforms. It didn't change me. At work we still have a paper trial. I correspond via email in letter form. I talk across platforms. I love the old and new. Its how we adapt and our attitude towards change. Nothing much to change IT does not change me.

A message here though gets misunderstood op. Wheress a letter or a call does not.

Better was probably the wrong word should have said I enjoyed it more. Social media killled a lot of the socialising back then you had to go out to socialise, pubs were a lot more fun when they were full and nobody was on their phone, online gaming killed so many childhoods I tell my sons how even into our early 20s me and my mates still hung out after work and did stuff at weekends went to the beach or the pool ect and none of them do anything like that now.

It is great in some ways I don’t miss using the a-z whrn going out pricing jobs and a few other things but did prefer the simpler life

It was better for some people.

The pre social media socialising, I found pretty impossible. If you don't like crowded places with people shouting to be heard and talking about stuff that bored me rigid - no one would talk to you.

The internet made other things possible. And it hasn't stopped going to noisy places shouting at people about things that bore me rigid!

I grew up around some pretty horrible and vile people. I'd trade those times in for every second I've spent online socialising with people I actually fit in with, people that are not horrible and vile, people I'd have never known without the Internet.

I'm not a fan of people in general, largely due to those I grew up around (none family), but there are a few that pop up that give you that bit of hope and every single one of them for me have been thanks to the Internet.

Nostalgia is a hell of a fucking drug. Rose tint is the best filter.

Absolutely.

I'm not going to argue it wasn't better for some people. But it was a whole lot worse for others. The internet has let me find more of my people. And meant I'm less beholden to those who are horrible, vile, and happen to be nearby. (Or even just less beholden to the people I find boring or lacking in compatibility)

Definitely agree with rose tinted glasses on this but I do remember as a kid going off for hours on my push bike, home when you were hungry.

How many kids now can actually ride a bike, change an inner tube, or feel safe or their parents feel safe they can go out.

I am sure there were still the “weirdos” (using another word so I don’t get a ban) around but we didn’t seem to know about it. Or maybe aware.

The statistics suggest that millennials and gen X were way more at risk as children than gen Z and gen Alpha were/are.

I think having maps/satnav on your phone must make driving around a lot simpler than having to pull up to the side of the road to check a map???

I do not miss that. "No I'm not looking at the map MumsName, I know where I'm going!"

Possibly but so many benefits too.

You know you do all those things if you crave a different type of experience or creativity, just do it.

I work in tech but still go off grid on with a map or even the stars sometimes to guide us wild-camping at night and I recently bought ‘Letters to open when….’ And been busy writing and learning Arabic calligraphy!!

We have more access to information, that didn't make the situation worse just we are more aware. The pedophiles didn't start with the inventions of the Internet. There were vile and sick people in the 60s,70s 80s and 90s that were grooming and hurting people. Before the Internet we were much less internationally minded. People are much more accepting today than they ever have been.

Are we perfect? No is social media a danger to all of us? Yes. But at least we are much more informed.

The internet is a place for people who do wrong to congregate, they are made to feel they are not the only people with that evil in them its a place that spreads negative news you log on to your phone its there, you have to physically ignore all that and do what you do despite it, its good in one way, finding information about illness and geography but so much is not good, you have no choice but to accept its going to get worse, some things you can actually only buy online, so you buy it its not what you want you have to try and send it back

The internet has made some things better, and a lot of things much worse.

My current annoyance is the way people jump on whatever the current outrage is meant to be. It’s quite alarming how easy it is to sway people’s opinions with the internet.

The majority of people seem to be losing their individuality. Critical thinking is going out the window. Everything is becoming polarised.

It was a lot easier to be lonely before the internet. I don't make friends that easily, and when I went to university I lost contact with all my support network from school. It took a long time for me to build new relationships beyond just casual acquaintances.

Then when I left university and started working, I was in a new city where I knew nobody, and other than talking to work colleagues about work matters, I was basically on my own. Again it was a long time before there was anyone that I could call a proper friend.

Now I have friends that are scattered across the world, I talk with them by text or phone or video call every day. I exchange photos of where I am, I see what they are doing, we share news and jokes. These are real continuing friendships, even though some of them I might never actually be face to face with again.

There are problems with the internet, it does get abused by some, and there are definitely some Bad People out there. But I believe that the good outweighs the bad by a huge amount.

Sadly I have failed to embrace the Internet era and the technology that it provides, perhaps if I was 20 years younger I would have coped better.

I drive around and see roads, bridges.blocks of flats, shopping centres. all built in the pre internet era and think to myself how did we build all these without computers, mobile phones and the internet.

I do remember having a new company car in 1981 and it was fitted with an in car telephone, reception was dreadful and in most cases non existant, when it died at 6 months it was not replaced.

Sadly we cannot put the clock back
