Mother knows best

Watching Tangled with my small human and everytime I hear this song I laugh because I actually grew up with the idea that your elders know what’s best always. Do you think your parents and elders always know best? Are there some things they probably will always best people to go to over someone else or trusting yourself?

I don't think these things are meant to be taken literally.

Elders knowing better is essentially a concept to get kids to respect adults and do what they're told. Which I broadly agree with.

It's not meant to mean that I know better than you just because I'm older, Steve.

I mean obviously I do, but that's got nothing to do with my age.

Would I go to my mother for advice on how to recover documents from my computer? Heck no I mean she can barely use a computer.

Elders opinions on things they've lived through can be a treasure chest of wisdom.

In different cultures the Elders are revered and respected. In the western world elders are often disrespected by the kids of today as they don’t want to follow our rules and think they know best.

That’s when they tend to have accidents or do things that get them into trouble. Just at the weekend two teenagers in separate incidents trespassed into the railway and were electrocuted with life changing injuries. They thought they knew better than to follow the rules!

We can still learn from the youth of today as well.

Sometimes my mum is brilliant and does know best, like the other day she was able to help out a friend because of her knowledge on something. Or when she tells me to never date an Italian man. Actually scratch that one, I'll never really listen to it. Hear it, yeah sure. Listen? Nah, fuck that.

The other times? Far from it. I can still respect and listen to her opinion, find it interesting when I discover what's shaped her views on the world.

It doesn't mean I have to take it as gospel.

The older I'm getting the more I'm enjoying learning about and from my "elders".

"mother knows best" is more about wisdom than actual knowledge for me.

Times have changed and intelligence only goes so far, anything to do with modernisation my mother generally comes to me.

For wisdom, my mum is my go to everytime now.

My mum was not, and is not manipulative in her telling me and my brother what to do. She never used it as a tool of authority but guidance. So I have a different experience to most I guess.

Based upon her experiences, she was right, and it has helped me.

If I got the same piece of advice from a 20 year old and a 60 year old, I'd probably weigh the latter more seriously, but apart from that, no.

I think there's a toxic deference towards age/ wisdom sometimes, at the expense of diversity, creativity, and the potential for meaningful change. Something we need to counteract.

Even if it is true that mummy knows best when kiddo thinks peas are icky, or that the headstrong teenager might do better to listen to the boomer who's been there and got the scars for it - it's not a blanket rule. There are some wise teenagers and some moronic pensioners. (And everything in between)

No.

Don't think they know what's best all the time but I'm sure their advice comes from a good, loving place and their real hopes for you not to make as many mistakes as them.

For sure they have been around the block a few times and have been in many situations that will be new to their kids.

Sadly, many have seen things they would never want their kids to witness.

But, mum and dad, nan and grandad and all other elders generally are only trying to help.
