I need some help forumites.

Next Thursday I have five hours to kill in Manchester. I'm taking my son up to the university for an open day & interview and I'm at a loose end between twelve and five.

I'm not looking to meet anyone as only one half of us are going and I can't sit in the pub as I'm driving.

Just needs bit of sightseeing advice really.

Mr Thomas's Chop House is one of the oldest in manchester - serves great lovely food in a small old bar setting.

The Traingle and around that area has some nice shops - harvey niks, D&G, Selfirdges etc

King street is a good follow on to that too

You could try the science and industry museum, it's free admission, it has a nice cafe and lots to see, if your into that kind of thing

There's a few different buildings, all have something different housed inside, it's more or less directly across from the Hilton

There's the Whitworth Art Gallery and it is part of the University of Manchester so you're there already. It is home to some of the UK's finest collections of art and design including modern and historic fine art, prints, textiles and a rare collection of wallpapers.

And there's always the Trafford centre, even a man can spend hours roung there lol, but if you are unfamiliar with the surrounding area I'd stay in the city centre.

Take the M62 to Liverpool and come and enjoy some real northern friendliness and culture.

There's actually lots to see in and around Manchester. If you go to Salford Quays there's The Lowry Museum with some outlet shopping too.

There's several museums in or close to the centre of Manchester including The Science Museum. There's The Trafford Centre as a huge out of town shopping complex, plus loads more shopping in and around Deansgate.

There's also Adam & Eves in Eccles and Cupids in Swinton which are both open in the afternoons for some swinging fun, should you be interested in such activities.

Nope though I have been on it in the past, you even got to see the House of Commons set that was used in the series House of Cards amongst others...

Apart from the street, I think the Corry studios and all the indoor filming has moved to Media City in Salford Quays, the same area that for example BBC Breakfast is screened and Question of Sport or Matermind is filmed...

The Whitworth Art Gallery is not far from the Uni and is good for modern art. Then there's the Manchester Museum which is actually part of the Uni and has a very good Egyptian Room.

Absolutely not the curry mile. I know someone who has an eaterie there and what he has told me made my eyes water and my stomach churn. Not been back there since he told me.

And I won't go into details.

Just to clarify for a stranger in town, the "science museum" is well sign posted but is actually called the Museum of Science and Industry. (MOSI)

Don't forget, Manchester has a "China Town" with Chinese restaurants and supermarkets. Although the best / largest Chinese Supermarket is probably ""Wing Yips" on the A62, Oldham Road, right next to the city centre.

If you're interested in aeroplanes, there's the "viewing area" at Manchester airport where you get close to the runway and can walk through a Concorde.

Or, "The Runway" pub. A pub with pay and display parking, but their beer garden is the closest you will ever get to the end of the runway.

And of course, Manchester has more than it's fair share of nearby swing clubs, massage parlours and dodgy "sex shops".

I'm assuming the response you weren't looking for was 'me !' ?

Lowry Outlet is a bit shit imho, not that many good stores - you're better off hunting out some sale stuff in Selfridges, Harvey Nics or House of Fraser.

There is also a HUGE Primark

Loads of bars and nice cafes / restaurants in the Northern Quarter.

Art gallery on Whitworth Street is cool as is the Manchester Museum and MOSI.

Hope you have fun - I love wandering round strange cities

More to the point I hope ur young 'uns interview goes to plan !

If he gets in, for a small fee, myself and Rusty will make sure he is watched and kept out of mischief
