Women's football world cup

Was watching a game this week with a mate and got chatting.... Is the women's footy league getting the same coverage/promo? Are people watching it and having office sweepstakes?

Are the women's games still dominated by male viewers (perves )?

I'm enjoying watching, but it's somewhat sad to see an empty stadium.

It's going to take a hell of a long time for it to get anywhere near the same coverage as the men's game.

It needs the investment bringing on par with the men's game but this isn't going to happen while the quality of the players and matches is still as bad as what it is.

I feel that once the women's game has its first superstar that's on par with the likes of ronaldo and messi that's when it will click and become more popular.

I'm not a football fan regardless. I am very happy to see such coverage of the women's teams however if the women's England team were not doing as well as they have been it would not be getting the same kind of coverage, nor would random people have any interest in it.

It is going to grow in popularity in England at least so long as they are doing well, it is never going to be close in popularity as the men's game. For multiple of reasons. It won't have the same income or money making appeal, even if they made it all sexy and extremely objectified so many of the football fans (not all!!!) are extremely sexiest, they won't ever take to women being part of the sport in any way. Just look how many people have shit to say about sport journalists, interviewers, commentators etc

I've so far watched the 3-4 minute highlights of every match on the BBC app and whilst I've been impressed with some of the skill shown, the overall product is poor. Atrocious goalkeepers, weak shooting, many relatively easy chances missed. And remember I'm watching the highlights! The commentary is, understandably, biased too.

Remember though, this is women's football, for it to succeed women need to support it #youdontneedmentosucceed

It will never, ever be as popular or as financially supported because it isn't as good. Simple as that.

It is also not being helped by the over the top eulogising of it. Statements like 'the England team sold out Wembley, showing there is just as much appetite for the game ' fail to mention that tickets are £10 and free for kids, and the Sky ticker that says Liverpool sign 'xyz' just piss people off because they (I) an expecting transfer news from the men's team.

Good luck to them. I will watch when England get to the knockout stages, but the product is a totally different product to men's football and they are doing it a disservice by comparing the two.

Women athletics on the other hand is a proper elite sport. It's wonderful.

I don't follow football (So I know nothing)

But I've heard people say similar things to yourself.

My brother loves football, but he says the game just isn't as entertaining to watch.

I watched quite a few league games last season. There are quite a few decent players, Sam Kerr stands out, I think some men turn their noses up because it's not as physical as the men's game. It knows it's audience and if it gets kids playing sports it's all good.

Have watched the highlights but only watched the England game live.

It's the Republic of Ireland's first world Cup

Unfortunately I think ROI have been knocked out.

I'm not going to get into the whys and wherefores about women's footy because prior experience tells me that those who come here to deride its "quality" aren't interested in anything other than reinforcement of their view that women's football is shit.

Just go and read about why professional women's football fell out of existence for 80 years and who made those decisions and who still makes decisions about women's football. If you still don't care or just want to shovel shit at them, then you're probably a [redacted].

It’s a *different* game to the men’s game, it has a slightly different audience too, although with a significant overlap of people who like both.

There’s also people on both sides that like to score “points” against the other - ie disparage either the men’s or women’s game in favour of the one they like.

Why can’t they both exist and thrive in their own right? It’s not a competition about which is better.

There are aspects of the women’s game I like more than the men’s, and aspects less so.

It’s great that the popularity is growing and I hope increased coverage can inspire lots of young girls to take up the game.

It's really poor with little speed, quality or excitement & the level of accepted bias in funding the tournament at a loss should be seen as unfair but equal rights are forgotten.

Added to that seeing players in their underwear last week was laughable, apparently empowering but in truth it was about the money. They sold themselves out when wanting the tournament to be taken seriously.

And men's football is just a load of overpaid fuckboys prancing round and feigning injury.

Feels good, doesn't it

I’ve watched all but a game or two so far. Loving it, seems a much more family friendly atmosphere than the mens games, definitely going to get myself to some WSL games this coming season too.

With the Lionesses winning the Euros last year, a good run in a World Cup (who knows, maybe even win it..) will throw the game in to the spotlight even more

Football is football, whether it’s Mens or Womens, Premier League or Non League - we all love the game, the drama and the passion.

Lets go the girls

I’m a huge WSL fan anyway, so I’m watching it. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s getting the coverage it deserves but, we’re moving in the right direction and we’ve only got the players, past and present, to thank for what the women’s game will be in the future. I’m also highly critical of the manufacturers not making the goalkeeper kit available!

100%. Outrageous Nike won’t produce it, how many girls out there want to be the next Mary Earps and can’t even get an England kit with her name on.

I’m pleased the games have been on the main BBC/ITV channels so far, rather than hidden away behind the red button - so that’s a plus I’d say

What's stopping me are the timings from Australia mainly, working or travelling to work during the matches. I'll try to catch some at the weekend.

Don't disagree on the poor morals of male footballers but unless you are reading in braille you are kidding yourself on quality.

I think the word you're seeking is "different". It's different.

It's a bit like tennis. In the men's game, lots of points are won by someone smashing a serve without it being returned, because on average, men can hit the ball harder. Women serve fewer aces. It's still tennis. Tennis played on wheels is still tennis, but it's different. I would argue immeasurably better for being on wheels, but that's my own bias

Trying to hold women's sport to be identical to men's sport is silly, unless they are sports where there's other factors that means less difference, e.g. equestrian sport and motorsports. And darts isn't a sport, so we can ignore that one

Of course Darts is a sport if its people competing against each other with a skillset rather than luck, I can see I,m wasting my time given that line.

I think womens tennis is better than men's as that's all about aces now in the mens tournament & motorsport is never going to see womenbeating men in F1 as its about strength too.

Rose coloured spectacles won't make the poor quality football any better. Convince yourself you are right & say as you wish but I know the truth.

What is the Truth, please? Lots of people say they know the Truth, but can't elucidate further.

And snooker. That's not a sport either

I'm ambivalent about golf. It's boring, but at least they go for a bit of a walk in the fresh air. Maybe it's a sport. Maybe not.

Chess? It's about as mentally and physically taxing as darts but we don't usually call it a sport. I'm up for Olympic Chess if anyone else is? Optional to play it in a public house.

I'd like to see more women in motorsports.

Women compete on a level playing field with men in equestrian events which, if you know anything about them, you'll know that leg, bum and thigh strength is key. Which men usually have more of, but doesn't seem to be the deciding factor.

Anyway, women's football is different to men's football and if that means I have "rose tinted specs" on, then cool. Can you please pass the lens cleaner?

Chams or Socials

My mum was chosen to play football for England at the 1971 Olympics. She became an FA qualified referee too. One of the first in the UK/England.

I’ve watched as many games as I can so far & have to say there is far less time wasting & dramatics than when men play
