Leicestershire

The power supplies in 'em are used to being on all the time and them being warm. Over time they get thermal problems inside which means that when the power is off for an extended period and the mains comes back on... no results.

Try wafting a hairdryer on a not-too-hot setting around the vents on the back of the set.. it may come back to life, but still needs fixing.

Do you get your tv signal via a Sky, Virgin or Freeview box?

It may be the box needs retuned.

Power inverter is probably fried, happens quite often on LCD and Plasma TVs. How long you had it? They really don't last anywhere near as long as the old cathode ray TVs we all grew up with...

Heh , I inherited my great grandmothers old valve TV when I was at Agricultural College .

My room was not much more than a cupboard and the TV was huge.

One Sunday several of us squeezed into my room to watch top gear in glorious colour (pre Clarkson days ) , I switched it on and it exploded .

Poo. ! It stank and that was the end of that nights viewing

Probably the inverter then. They can be replaced but depending on your TV can cost a fortune, probably more cost effective to buy a new one.
