I’m trying to run an Ethernet from my front room, outside, up the side of the house and into my back room. Anyone know what specific type I need or is it any Ethernet cable? Surely it has to be weatherproof but are all cables weatherproof?!

The wire is waterproof as long as the connector isn't open to the elements. Be aware though that wire length can have a impact on performance.

Cat6, if it's outside stick it in plastic pipe

If it's running outside of the house then you'll need a solid core Cat6 (Cat5 is fine too). It's a shame Maplins aren't around anymore. They would give you the precise length and crimp it for you too.

Cat 5/5e or Cat 6 is the cable type you need. Interior cable will work, but the sheathing is not UV and moisture resistant so the life expectancy is not as good as the external stuff. But for the cost and ease of replacing it'll be fine.

I used TP link that turns the house electrics into an ethernet cable as such. Don't know how technically correct that is. You then have a plug at the other end that has an ethernet connection. I used it for my son's Xbox and it solved his issues.

Can’t you run a dedicated network extender or mesh? I have one specifically to send video remotely from a cctv dvr, which works perfectly well. Mines quite an old one now, so the newer Tenda AC1200 mesh should be more than capable- unless you’re looking to stream 4k video with shoddy compression ratios.

If you are going hardwired, as mentioned earlier, you can get specific external UV stabilised cables online- might as well go cat7 for a bit of future proofing

Can I ask what you need it for?

There are a few instances when connections still have to be hard wired but unless ping time is an issue, a mesh will meet your need and a lot less hassle.

If you're going doing wire road, then cat6 in a conduit would be the way to go. But honestly honestly, get a wifi scanner, find a low use channel and go that way.

Maybe I dreamt this but I’m sure you used to be able to get things that plugged into power sockets in the router room and the destination room that ran the internet through the house along the power cables

They use your electrical mains to send the signal.

Yeah, cables are waterproof. No issues there. Only need to take care of the connectors. Electric tape does the trick usually, if they're outside, wich you should try to avoid if possible for convenience.

Make sure the cable doesn't chafe somewhere and you'd be all good

The wifi in the room is fine. The console just for some reason can’t get reliable speeds. I’ve tried boosters and extenders and I still get lag. Hard wired is the way to go I think
