Canvey Island

Today I went to see the Oppenheimer movie, I’ve never seen so many people jump out of their seats

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

I really enjoyed it. For a film with not a lot happening and loads of dialogue crammed into very short scenes I’m amazed at how good it actually is.

It is good. I was dying towards the last 30 min with my adhd and a 180 minute film, but I managed to watch it all despite family protests about all my fidgeting, leg shuffling, playing with my hair etc

Some scenes gave me Citizen Kane vibes. good photography, an all star cast … need to watch it again at some point though

I see how you might think that but I'm not sure it's accurate. The seeds of Oppenheimer's downfall started before ww2 and only gathered pace from then. He had a lot of enemies from politics, business and academia.

It was a convenience to label him a security, his enemies needed him out of the way. He was incredibly persuasive and needed to be removed from the picture so the nuclear arms race would proceed impeded

There was a number of physicists in WW2 anticipating how the world would change with atomic weapons. Oppenheimer thought the genie could be put back into the bottle and tried repeatedly to do so.

It was in respect of how people that had done much to bring about the end of the war (although still arguable in respect of the Manhattan Project, although if they hadn't, the Germans or Russians would), were then so poorly treated afterwards.

Turing was in many ways easier to vilify, as his sexuality was illegal at the time. Oppenheimer's downfall had to be bought about in a more nuanced fashion.

The last 30-40 minutes could have probably been edited but the dialogue was so compelling, you didn't realise how long the film was.

I went to see it on Saturday. I really enjoyed and so did my son even though it's not his kind of flim.

I will say the sound was a bit load for me at times but that might have been just in our cinema.

The sound is really loud (I've seen it in two cinemas now).
