No, it's not a kink. It's a bloody tragedy (first world tragedy). Our previously lovely soft water is now being blended with groundwater by United Utilities and is now harder and more disgusting than the stuff that comes out of the taps in our capital city. My tea tastes foul, has what looks like an oil slick on top of it and is completely unpalatable.

What do we do?! I don't want to add to plastic pollution with Brita filters here, there and everywhere, but honestly, the stuff coming out of these northern taps is now absolutely vile

It sometimes helps to let a jug of water stand for 24 hours in the fridge and use all but the bottom inch or two. Otherwise it's filters I'm afraid

Write to your M.P and make sure they are doing something about it and at the same time not receiving "gifts" from the local water company like mine is

He lives about 0.5 miles away so he'll be getting the same muck as us. He's probably used to it, with frequent stops in London! I'll send an email....

If you’ve got a bit of spare cash buy one of those Virgin Pure things. I think they’re about £300 and give you instant boiled or ice cold filtered water and they connect directly to your water supply.

Are you positive they are not/or have been working in the area recently?

That would cause dirty cloudy water and would just require the taps running for a while

No, we had a letter from United Utilities, telling us that our "blend" would be changing. And it bloody well has! Like chalk (pun not really intended) and cheese

I like in a chalky hard water area and suds don’t froth properly or for long and there’s always limescale. Saying that, it makes excellent tea whereas when I go to a soft water area, the tea tastes horrible.

It's often like that. I do wonder if it sometimes just comes straight from the rivers. Which is okay if sewage isn't pumped in. New zealand water in one area straigh up tasted like grass

Try Coldstream branded water filters, ceramic filters made in the uk with much less plastic than most. They won’t take out the calcium and magnesium salts that make the water hard, but that’s good for you anyway

I'm a bit cautious about ion exchange filtration, because they add more sodium into the water, exchanging calcium/magnesium, which might not be healthy and haven't got the tech here to monitor it.

We've tried turning it off and on again AND we've tried swearing and cursing. But no improvement. Horses can swim, right? We could have an amphibious horse in the garden. I'll have to work out how to milk it under water, such is the amount of rain

We had soft water when we arrived!!! But they changed it. They started putting groundwater in with the reservoir water this week and now it's hard.

Derby is awful for hard water too which made my coffee taste fucking terrible. A Brita filter definitely helped but would love to live in a soft water area.

Wait a minute.

You have just solved your own problem.

Rain is water. And water is wet. And water that is wet tastes best when drizzled down from the sky above, especially on a clear blue sunny day. Have you tried a bucket? Don't worry about the horse, you can drink the sky juice in place of the horse milk.

You can even rub some rain on your titties and send me a picture.

I grew up in the north west and didn’t know what line scale was until I moved to London.

Have to be honest I’ve got used to it and drink it straight out the tap. Is a pain having to replace appliances because of lime scale have got a softener fitted to the washing machine pipe.

In Swindon the water is quite hard. Pain in the arse trying to keep sinks, taps and showers clean and free from Limescale.

Best thing I ever did was install a water softener. Don't bother with anything other than a proper water softener.

We aren't actually on the mains for water.

All that lovely soft Scottish water bypasses our houses. What we have is limescale central and I hate it. Bottled water drinker and I don't feel guilty about it

That’s the truth, I’ve worked at what’s called potable water sites, we simply can’t do what Mother Nature does, natural spring water has everything we need, everything it touches and navigates makes it so. I live in Huddersfield I thought our water was bad, worked in Wakefield and couldn’t even drink the shit. We’re stuck tbh unless you live near a natural spring or water source. Brita filters/ water purifiers are marketing, like the dude says it’s dead water.
