"Provided they arrive via the legal route with skills that we need and are willing to embrace our culture and way of life, they are a valuable way of rejuvenating our economy and create the wealth required to pay benefits to the lazy, self entitled brits who aren’t prepared to study and work for a living. (Yes, Yes! There are legitimate claimants of benefits but we are the most unluckiest nation as we have a disproportionate number of lazy people who take the piss out of what should be a system for honest people to help them back into a self sufficient living.)" Oh dear. My Great Grandfather came here without a penny to his name. No qualifications we are aware of. He lived initially in squalid digs in Liverpool but somehow, his streets were paved with gold and when he died, around 60 years after arriving, he was a very wealthy man. I'm not clear what, if any rules applied to immigration from Europe at the time, so he might even have been illegally here initially. But here we are, a family of hard workers.

It’s like the story about the person who made loads of money even though he did not finish school and trying to suggest the the allegory was about education not being needed. You need to read my post, it is not about the immigrants not being able to make the most of the opportunity afforded them by moving to a first world economy, it is about us making sure that we bring people into the country that we need. I love the optimism of some people who think that we are somehow able to absorb those that are not supplying resources in the areas where we have gaps.

My GG arrived in Liverpool just before the start of the 20th century. We know from research back in his home country that the family were very poor and he had nothing. The family were slaughterhouse workers and butchers. But he did not take that profession in the UK. He became a dealer in "antique plate and jewellery", running his own shop in Rodney St, eventually. The clock that stood in the window for people to set their watches by, stands in my Dad's dining room. My GG died not long after WW2, leaving an Estate of considerable value. We don't know how he came to work in the jewellery trade, we do know he was ostracised by the local Jewish community because he married a non Jewish woman and had his kids baptised, maybe he just met the right person to give him a leg up? The 1891 census has him living in shared lodging in Kensington, Liverpool, which is still a very poor area. The property was demolished in slum clearances. By 1921, he was living in a house in an exclusive area near the University. Like chalk and cheese. The above is 100% true. We'll never know how he did it, but an unqualified, penniless man made his "millions" and died a rich man, in a beautiful house near the river, on the Wirral side. I'm not telling you the name of the house, but I know it and it still is there today.

We shouldn't be charging our own citizens for taking college courses either. If the new(ish) fees for post-19 education at L3 and above were abolished, we'd have far more home grown people filling vacancies. At present, if you take a L3 course straight from school (which you usually select around a year before taking up the place) but find you don't like it or there's few jobs, you are stuck. Unless you are willing to take up Learner Loans to retrain, you just stay with what you have. There are fewer apprenticeships options at post 19 now too. We should be targeting educational investment at the areas where we have shortages, rather than charging people through the nose and expecting them to get into massive debt. Re: skilled asylum seeker visas, this doesn't help those who lack the requisite level of English or whose qualifications are not accepted as directly comparable for entry into skilled UK roles. Many doctors, dentists and teachers need to retrain at least in part, before being eligible to practice/work in the UK, and obviously a certain level of English (usually IELTS 7.0/7.5+) is required for roles in medical/dental and education roles.

Imagine you had to flee your country at short notice and end up somewhere where you don't speak the language and your qualifications aren't recognised. The Govt places you in a closed environment, surrounded by other people who also don't speak the local language. There are no provisions made for helping you integrate. How would you acquire the local language to the level required to work in a professional, public facing role?? Or, we could just spaff loads of money on keeping such people as isolated as possible, on barges on the sea and then complain like little children that we have skills gaps, no dentists and our children are being taught Biology by PE teachers. That works too.

" If the qualifications aren't recognised then they aren't skilled workers, at least not to UK standards. Same goes for speaking English. We have a responsibility to take asylum cases when they are presented. We don't have a responsibility to teach them the language and train them. ". But that is not the point. God bless your granddaddy but this is not 60 years ago. Empire is dead and so is our economy. We need productive people with skills that fill the gaps in areas that are in current short supply. Nurses, engineers, Qualified Gas And Electrical tradespeople, teachers. What we don’t need is street traders and labourers pretending to be refugees instead of what they are… economic migrants with basic skills that we already have in plentiful supply. There are plenty of skilled asylum seekers, but we don't allow them to work and most cannot study unless they pay full international fees (£20k per year plus). We could offer training in these shortage areas, alongside English language and cultural awareness lessons. But we don't. We abandon people on barges, isolate them on ex-military bases and surround Travelodges with security guards and arbitrary rules. If asylum seekers are skilled in accordance with our list, they can apply for a visa. Why should we offer free training without charge? We don't offer it to our citizens. But we do charge them, so until we don't then why should we not charge anyone who isn't a citizen? Of course English should be a prerequisite to enable someone to work as a doctor/dentist. Again, why should they be taught English free of charge? If someone wants to apply for a skilled work visa then they can learn English. For example, the duty of teachers in safeguarding young people and the reasons why you might make a safeguarding referral are very different here vs in other countries. We're not going to stop asylum seekers and refugees from coming here, no matter what noise the Govt makes. It's interesting that Ukrainian refugees were not subject to the same level of hate from the British population as those fleeing wars in Afghanistan or Syria. I wonder why? The UK Govt has spent a lot of taxpayers money on schemes for Ukraine. Why not the same attitudes from the population at large? Who knows. Once in receipt of refugee status, the individual who has previously been a doctor, dentist, teacher etc is still in possession of their prior quals and work experience from home; still at whatever level of English they arrived with and still with as little money. Whether people are officially asylum seekers or refugees, there would need to be inward investment to get people to a level to work in the skilled areas where we have gaps. There are pilot schemes running, for example, in Liverpool, for nurses. What people receive in inward funding to retrain is dwarfed by the tax paying potential they have once they can work in the NHS. It's a no-brainer. https://www.nhsemployers.org/news/supporting-refugees-employment-talent-beyond-boundaries

You're original point was training at 20k/year. That isn't 'already qualified' level retraining. If we are offering some training and language skills to immigrants then we should also be offering it to our own citizens. It's cool though because we can just run around calling people racists, that'll get them to see the error of their ways.

If the qualifications aren't recognised then they aren't skilled workers, at least not to UK standards. Same goes for speaking English. We have a responsibility to take asylum cases when they are presented. We don't have a responsibility to teach them the language and train them. It's funny because the argument we usually hear for asylum seekers wanting to get to the UK is family ties and common language. There is a difference between speaking English at a conversational level vs speaking English at a level that would enable you to work in skilled industries, such as medicine, teaching, engineering etc. But I'm sure your French GCSE would equip you to become a brain surgeon in France very effectively, no? Just because the UK doesn't immediately recognise the medical degrees or teaching quals etc of immigrants, does not mean they are unskilled. They require relatively minimal retraining in general and orientation to the NHS ways of working (where this applies) and other cultural differences. For example, the duty of teachers in safeguarding young people and the reasons why you might make a safeguarding referral are very different here vs in other countries. We're not going to stop asylum seekers and refugees from coming here, no matter what noise the Govt makes. We have an opportunity to enable some of those inward immigrants to use their existing skills to enrich this nation, rather than having them languishing in Travelodges. I don't understand why we would choose the latter, rather than the former. I thoroughly agree. But the government seem intent on stirring up xenophobia against asylum seekers whilst still not providing a safe, legal route. " Well to be fair, that’s what their base want to hear.

" You kind of lose it when you start talking about racists et al. It's the standard go to, isn't it. Only its not true for majority of the population, is it? Asylum seekers are in the country seeking asylum. We grant them asylum whilst we process their claims, once approved they are then refugees and can do as they please within reason. Until that point, they are kept in safe accommodation, they don't actually have a choice where that is. They are here and safe, that's really all that matters. Processing time is another discussion. It's a no-brainer. https://www.nhsemployers.org/news/supporting-refugees-employment-talent-beyond-boundaries You've kind of moved the conservation quite far from where it started. You're original point was training at 20k/year. That isn't 'already qualified' level retraining. If we are offering some training and language skills to immigrants then we should also be offering it to our own citizens. It's cool though because we can just run around calling people racists, that'll get them to see the error of their ways. " 20k are the international fees that asylum seekers have to pay to attend university in the UK ![]()

"What are your thoughts on foreigners? Yes, I’m one of them. " My thoughts on foreigners are they are all human beings, like I am too. We share the same planet together, none of us get to choose which bit of the earth we get born in and it seems a bit ridiculous to think of one human life any differently to another because of which bit of land we came from. If I like someone I like them, if I don't I don't, that's down to our personalities, not nationalities.

"^^^At their own cost. Not anyone else's. I'm pointing out how impossible it is for an asylum seeker to afford to educate themselves to a professional standard. The same course for a UK student would be around £9500" Most universities' fees for the majority of subjects fell somewhere between £10,000 – £20,000. That's for a full time course. Not some 'retraining'. It would be a much easier and more open conversation if you weren't trying to inflate things to try to prove some sort of point.

International fees for medicine are usually £30k+ Because retraining themselves from scratch is impossible for asylum seekers, and probably also for refugees (who pay UK student fees of £9250), it would be more effective to instead look to recognise the pre existing qualifications and experience, and offer training such as that being piloted in Liverpool, which is aimed at bringing existing skills in line with British standards; building English language levels and cultural adjustment to the UK ways of working. That's what I'm trying to get at.

Maybe. I'm just glad I don't have to leave my home and country for whatever reason. I do blame our Government for not putting the money into resources and infrastructure as our population numbers climbed. That put a strain on councils to house them-as most weren't emigrating with pots of cash behind them and joined the housing queue under EEA rules-pushing some people way down the housing list who had been waiting years. Also, schools weren't being built quickly enough, and GPs not paid enough to keep them here, meaning waiting times for appointments rocketed. People blame migrants, illegal immigrants, refugees when it's the Government sitting on our money.

That we do take in a fair share of immigrants and asylum seekers? Probably far more than other larger countries do. You've clearly made a home here, and that is wonderful, and to be applauded... But calling the UK worse than shit, and racist, and whatever is not so much? My half siblings are mixed race, they are attending school, uni, working. Just going about their daily lives. Nobody is petrol bombing their houses for being non-White. I absolutely agree that the NHS numbers were boosted around 15trs ago by an influx of mainly Asian workers... Although we don't have the same level of violence now, the tensions remain between different communities and there is an ongoing lack of integration and inter-community understanding. But your daily accounts seem skewed a tad ![]() ![]() Whether Saudi Arabia is institutionally racist (it is) or China is (it also is), doesn't impact me or the people around me much. What does impact me and the people around me is what happens here in the UK. Like I said, it's not a race to the bottom. We can and should lead the way on dismantling institutional racism, but instead we have politicians who drive racist agendas by weaponising immigrants and demonising certain groups of people. We have the biggest Police force in the UK deemed institutionally racist yet we are supposed to trust them to keep us safe. Yeah, I'm not on board with that. We have to do a lot better. And that's coming from an apparently white woman who isn't in an ethnic group likely to experience racism.

So I’m focusing on where I live and the racism I experience here.

"The UK has a racism problem. Whether it's better or worse than other countries is irrelevant. It's not really irrelevant unless you just want to focus on the UK and not worldwide issues. I thought we all wanted a better WORLD? I live here. Caring about the issues in other countries is important but the citizens of a nation are best placed to improve their experiences in that nation. So I’m focusing on where I live and the racism I experience here. " ![]() ![]()

That doesn't remove the fact that whilst way may to too far away, we are actually leading the way. Anyway, thought you didn't want to interact with me?

"Wow some comments on here you may aswell admit that your racist! Some lovely comments too ( feeling the love ppz ) it bugs me I’ve been here longer then what I’ve been in my country for over 15y I’ve paid my taxes ( yes I do agree illegal immigrants shouldnt be here) but some British ppl slanders us because we come here take their jobs blah blah blah but their ok seating at home getting paid of our tax money ( never mind a lot of them seats at home coz they too lazy to work or too posh to work in warehouse! ). A Fact 70% of UK hospitals DRS are foreigners, again without them we wouldn’t have the great NHS we do! Also it’s not ok we come here but ok for millions of brits move aboard and live their lives in different countries? Honest i call this small minded ppl, ppl like this need to be educated they really do. Please dont get me wrong i call UK home now! my kids are english and I have meet so many fantastic ppl here infact my first language might aswell be English lol but makes my blood boil as 20y ago we had nothing but racist ppl, Petrol bomb friends house, smashing houses up , bullying older ppl, groups of lads beating up someone who is just walking on street minding their own business, all because they foreigners ! WE ALL HUMANS WE ALL COME SAME WAY TO THIS EARTH WE ALL GOING OUT THE SAME WAY! Rant over To be fair you seem really upset over this? Which is understandable, but as a now British national you'll no doubt understand from the last 15yrs that it is a very small island, land mass wise? That we do take in a fair share of immigrants and asylum seekers? Probably far more than other larger countries do. You've clearly made a home here, and that is wonderful, and to be applauded... But calling the UK worse than shit, and racist, and whatever is not so much? My half siblings are mixed race, they are attending school, uni, working. Just going about their daily lives. Nobody is petrol bombing their houses for being non-White. I absolutely agree that the NHS numbers were boosted around 15trs ago by an influx of mainly Asian workers... But your daily accounts seem skewed a tad ![]() ![]() People won't like it but public figures like Johnson and Farage are a reflection on the population. No one had an issue with Johnson until he partied during covid, the racism was rewarded with Number 10.

" You may not feel that racism in other countries impacts you, that doesn't mean it doesn't have an impact, it does. " I said it doesn't impact me much. Not "not at all". We work with international students so we come up against ingrained racist attitudes from some students towards others all the time. We manage it.

" People seem to struggle to understand that "least racist" is still racist. They understand. They don’t care. Sad but true. " Some people only care about things that immediately harm them. Not even if it indirectly harms them and sometimes not even when it harms people they love. It's short sighted and this attitude is an indictment on those who have it.
