Demand from Britons buying second homes in the EU has fallen considerably and some are blaming Brexit and the need for medical insurance. Is Brexit to blame or to be thankful for

Sone would blame Brexit for anything!

Maybe it’s the effect of a pandemic that saw a huge rise in camper-van and staycation holidays. Or a recession , or a war that’s saw young Russians buying up property all over the world pushing the prices of holiday homes up

Since the UKs utter stupidity in 2016 its not worth getting a holiday home.

You are only allowed 90 days every 6 months and unless you apply for citizenship you cannot stay longer and yes medical bills would mean you need insurance.

Seriously if I could I would retire to France but thanks to the Wankers voting for Brexshit I am stuck.

Getting a home abroad simply isn't productive is now a beuractic nightmare and not worth the time. What I can't understand is the utter moronic so called expats who voted leave not realising they would not be able to stay now the UK is out.

In this case it is brexit because as a country outside of the Union different rules apply. What part of this did you not understand if you voted leave?

The vast majority of people in the UK are poorer, and although brexit hasn’t helped that it’s not the whole reason.

That said, OF COURSE brexit has reduced the amount of people buying holiday homes in the EU. You have to do loads of crap to sort it, you can’t stay as long as you want anymore, you can’t easily retire there anymore. I’d say Brexit was at least 90% to blame for the reduction.

Confused - so Brexit might be something to be thankful for because we now need medical insurance and hence less likely to buy holidays home in the EU? Why would anyone be thankful having their choices restricted or made more difficult and expensive?

What utter rubbish. They are behaving according to their rules, as we do. There is loads of rules for someone coming from over there to buy a property or retire here, actually there's even more rules!

Also they haven't lost us at all, last year was a record number of Brits abroad so not sure how you've arrived at that conclusion. Maybe you can provide some proof they 'lost the cash cow'.

The same sovereignty we always had. Don't buy in the BS from the red tops and the right wing nut jobs. You also seem to forget we had a veto over everything, if we didn't want it it wouldn't have happened. Maybe look at the government and ask why they didn't defend our interests instead of jumping on sound bites that are untruths.

Polling now shows (and has done for a while) that the majority think Brexit was a mistake.

So presumably you’d be happy having a referendum to rejoin? Or at least join EFTA?

unfortunately they are telling us what you can and can't do when you visit their house. And the new rules have made it harder for some.

Unfortunately when you buy a house you have neighbours.

Britain (or rather Brexiters) wanted to be given third country status. The EU agreed to that request. It was a part of Johnson's wonderful deal we were all told to celebrate. We are being subjected to the rules we asked to be subjected to. Of course, if your friend doesn't like it he can always campaign to rejoin the single market and regain his freedom of movement around the EU.

Been going on long before Brexit, just a 20% increase in population but not increase in infrastructure due to no new investment.

Maybe it’s the effect of a pandemic that saw a huge rise in camper-van and staycation holidays. Or a recession , or a war that’s saw young Russians buying up property all over the world pushing the prices of holiday homes up

I never voted leave & I will retire to Europe. There will be ways around the 180 day rule , I’m sure there will be golden visas or something like in Dubai or you just start a consultancy business based in Europe with minimal turnover.

"It’s Europe being a arse hole. Fried of mine wants to retire but the new rules means he may stay in the Uk because of those rules.

[ .... ]

Maybe you need to look at how they are behaving.

They can come here but we can’t go there.

They lost the Uk cash cow. Still for us it was the right thing to do leaving "

I hope you don't mind me picking through this topic by topic.

"It’s Europe being a arse hole. "

The EU asked the UK not to leave the Union.

They didn't want the UK to go.

When the UK was a part of the Union, it helped to write the rules for Non EU citizens entering.

The UK then insisted that those rules, that they had helped to write, should then apply to UK citizens after Brexit.

To summarise this bit, it's not Europe (or even just the EU) being an arsehole.

1. The UK wrote the rules.

2. The UK insisted they be applied.

3. The EU asked the UK not to do this but the UK did it anyway.

"Fried of mine wants to retire but the new rules means he may stay in the Uk because of those rules. "

First, they are not new rules. See 1 above.

UK citizens can still retire to the EU but have to prove they can support themselves. The EU has great rules about freedom of movement for EU citizens, but as he is a UK citizen, those rules don't apply to him.

For instance, in Spain, (where I live) Brits can retire here with a Non Lucrative Visa. Get him to google it if he's serious about retiring into the EU.

"Maybe you need to look at how they are behaving. "

Who are "they?" Do you mean specific EU countries or all EU countries?

I live in Spain. I see how they are behaving everyday. Most people are bemused by the UKs decision to leave the EU.

Is there some other different behaviour that you have seen? What is it? Can you point it out to other posters?

"They can come here but we can’t go there."

What do you mean by this?

The rules for an EU tourist entering the UK are broadly similar to the rules for a UK tourist entering the EU. The UK ought to know this as they agreed both sets of rules!

There are very strict rules for people entering the UK for study, marriage, work. I doubt many Brexiteers believe this as the propaganda for blaming "the others" for all the UKs woes has been swallowed by a lot of people.

Don't take my word for it, go to Gov.uk and google "Do I need a visa?"

The UK doesn't even offer a retirement visa that I could find!

"They lost the Uk cash cow."

Not sure where you are coming from with this.

If you mean the money that the UK paid as a member of the EU, then, no, of course they no longer get that.

But instead of thinking of the UK paying the money to the EU, think of it more as a bunch of people going out for drinks and having a joint kitty. It was all our money, not money the UK just gave away.

If you are talking about the UK cash cow being money from tourism, then you needn't worry for the EU. Tourism is booming here, both from the continuing UK visitors and from other parts of the world.

"Still for us it was the right thing to do leaving "

In what way was it the right thing to do? Can you list any benefits from the UK leaving the EU? In what way has your life benefitted from leaving?

I completely support your right to your opinion, but feelings don't override facts.

I would be really grateful if you would take the time to answer.

Cheers,

Gbat

Where do you get your figures from? I don't think they are accurate.

How was it fully controlled by Germany? Each member state had a full veto. Why do you think Germany was in control?

Are you really conjuring up the second world war here as a reason? If so, perhaps think about the sacrifice made by lots of non British Europeans. The UK were on the winning side, they didn't win the war!

And don't forget, over 10 million British people aren't English. There are 4 countries in the UK.

Lol, oh dear! In Spain, you can stay longer than 3 months with an NL visa, Portugal with D7 visa, France with a VLS-TS visa etc etc etc. These visas are incredibly easy for even the dullest minded people to get hold of with the right conditions.

"We joined a common market not a dictatorship you can't put a price on sovereignty... you wouldn't buy a house and let your neighbours tell you what you can and can't do in it

You obviously have no idea how the British political system works then? and neither have you if you want to overturn the biggest referendum result we've had .... how it works is the majority win the minority don't that's the rules

Polling now shows (and has done for a while) that the majority think Brexit was a mistake.

So presumably you’d be happy having a referendum to rejoin? Or at least join EFTA? pollings also showed that people wouldn't vote for brexit and trump wouldn't win... don't believe polls

You didn't answer the question, would you be happy for another vote on it? Since the 2016 ref was the 2nd vote on it I presume you have no problem with doing it again? we've had the vote for brexit ... then we had another vote for Mrs May and for Boris people only voted for them to get brexit done .... how many times do you want the public to vote till you except the outcome "

So with liverpool being such a stronghold of labour, you decided to vote tory?

After all voting for brexit, was voting for the tories.

It wasn’t a “cash cow” it was the UK contributing to the union the UK was part of, and every single citizen of the UK derived benefits from that contribution. No more membership, no more benefits!

But look how great the NHS is doing since “the right thing to do leaving”.

Completely!

They along with the UK instigated these laws and rules, so those member states outside of the EU would have to meet certain stipulations and criteria in order to reside within the member states. It was also agreed that exit from the EU would mean whatever state would relinquish those privileges.

I moved to France a year before the madness that is Brexit. Set up my business and started paying tax. I'm relient on the Brits 2nd and 1st homes here for my work (I'm a plasterer) and can honestly say that I don't know if Brexit harmed my industry or not. I'm thinking that it did as now there's less cash jobs about.

I'm a fully fledged, tax paying citizen of Europe, so relieved that I jumped the sinking ship Britannia.

The pros (of which there are few) and cons can be debated amongst scholars until time immemorial the truth of the matter is this....

I'm happy, healthy, I've got my place in the sun before I'm too old and knackered to enjoy it. My daughter is in an excellent education system and there's even an old fashioned sense of community here. I like it, nay love it here.

Britain owes me nothing and I owe her nowt. Goodbye ol' girl, bon voyage and good luck with future endeavours.

"It’s Europe being a arse hole. Fried of mine wants to retire but the new rules means he may stay in the Uk because of those rules.

[ .... ]

Maybe you need to look at how they are behaving.

They can come here but we can’t go there.

They lost the Uk cash cow. Still for us it was the right thing to do leaving

I hope you don't mind me picking through this topic by topic.

It’s Europe being a arse hole.

Fried of mine wants to retire but the new rules means he may stay in the Uk because of those rules.

Maybe you need to look at how they are behaving.

Who are "they?" Do you mean specific EU countries or all EU countries?

I live in Spain. I see how they are behaving everyday. Most people are bemused by the UKs decision to leave the EU.

Is there some other different behaviour that you have seen? What is it? Can you point it out to other posters?

They can come here but we can’t go there.

They lost the Uk cash cow.

Still for us it was the right thing to do leaving

In what way was it the right thing to do? Can you list any benefits from the UK leaving the EU? In what way has your life benefitted from leaving?

I completely support your right to your opinion, but feelings don't override facts.

I would be really grateful if you would take the time to answer.

Cheers,

Gbat

100% to blame.

Thats what happens when you trust a Tory."

Democracy in action, say whatever you like but it was a huge turnout so the decision was valid no matter what spin or part of the campaign you dispute.

Half of the people in councils & mp's win on much less than 40% turn out but no one squeaks.

Imagine winning but only getting 16% of a 40% turnout & thinking you represent the voters.

"UK didn’t win the war as Spain and France was doing such a good job of it and then on the winning side LOL"

I think you're trying to be sarcastic here, but it's not really working.

Few facts for you.

The easiest one is that Spain wasn't even IN the second world war, let alone win or lose it.

They were a neutral Fascist dictatorship under the rule of Franco from 1939 to 1975. They supported the aims of Germany and Italy, but didn't actively join the war. However, Franco did allow some Spanish soldiers to join German regiments fighting the Russians.

Franco was ill, fell into a coma and died in 1975. Hardly a war loser!

France was quickly overrun by Nazi Germany and lost around 568,000 people. Mind you, they fought hard in Indo-China against the Japanese and lost another 1 to 1 and a half million there.

The UK lost about 451,000 people, a lot less than France as you can see (if you bother looking).

The USSR lost a staggering 24 MILLION (24,000,000) people in the war. Almost half of all the second world war deaths were from the USSR.

The Soviets were the first to enter Berlin and force the suicide of Hitler. It was them that accepted the German army surrender there.

The Americans were fighting island by island to defeat Japan until they used atomic weapons against them and forced their surrender. The Brits did rather badly over that side of the world.

All told, thank goodness the UK was on the winning side, but as for the UK winning the war with everyone else playing a bit part, you're not even close to the truth.

But don't let truth spoil your story.

By the way, you didn't answer the earlier questions.

Cheers,

Gbat

Lingfield

From the Irish Daily Mirror on the 14th Feb 2023:

"Jack was the most popular name for baby boys in all provinces in 2022. Noah was the second most favoured name for boys in 2022 and held the top or joint top spot in 10 locations including Donegal and Cork City.

Some counties picked names outside the top five. Muhammad was ranked 86th nationally yet was most favoured in Galway City. Harry and James were the joint most popular boys’ names in Waterford county, ranking 18th and 3rd respectively on a national basis."

And here is an article about Ireland taking migrants. Admittedly it's over two years old but still relevant as I can find and reference to them being 'forced' to take 20,000 a year by the EU:

"Ireland voluntarily agreed to fully participate in the EU relocation and resettlement schemes set up in response to the migrant crisis that peaked in 2015.

The EU has never forced Ireland to take in refugees or immigrants.

In fact, Ireland has no obligation to take in refugees as, along with Denmark, it has an opt-in or opt-out clause on justice and immigration measures under the Lisbon Treaty.

However, Ireland voluntarily agreed to fully participate in the EU relocation and resettlement schemes set up in response to the migrant crisis that peaked in 2015."

"Ireland voluntarily agreed to fully participate in the EU relocation and resettlement schemes by accepting up to 4,000 migrants.

In September 2017, the Commission launched a new resettlement scheme in which Member States pledged to resettle more than 50,000 persons in need of protection - the largest EU resettlement scheme to date. Ireland has pledged to take 1,200 people under the new scheme.

Here are some facts regarding migration

The numbers registering for asylum in Ireland are below the EU average

In 2020, just over 1,500 people applied for asylum in Ireland, or less than 0.4% of the EU total.

Two-thirds of all people registering for asylum in the EU in 2020 did so in Germany, Spain or France.

The numbers of people applying for asylum in the EU have been falling and are now almost a third of the number recorded in 2015."

Finally, as I'm sure you are aware the EU have been discussing at lengths the issue of fairly distributing migrants fairly. This is an excerpt from the Irish Time on the 9th June this year where it explains Ireland's interest in this:

"Due to Ireland’s geographic isolation as an island and because it is not in the Schengen free travel area it has been less affected by pan-European migration trends and has not been a central player in these debates.

But the deal raises the prospect of reducing the number of people who enter the EU as a whole from its southern and eastern borders, and will be closely watched as it comes at a time when migration has soared up the political agenda in Ireland, at a delay of several years since it came to dominate the politics of many countries on the European continent."

The EU can’t force anything on a member state. Either countries agree or use their veto. It’s that simple.

Trouble is, so many people will swallow propaganda without realising what it is they are eating.

And so what if Mohammed was the most popular name? It’s beats many others hands down.

Never forget why we had the referendum in the first place. Cameron was scared of losing Tory votes to UKIP and the split created by the window lickers in his own party.

Brexit is to blame for some things but the Tory party is totally to blame for Brexit and the reason why we have such a divided Britain today.

The madness will continue as it will never 'work' in the friction free way that being part of the EU allows member states to integrate. Higher prices, less choice, more red tape and no seat at the table to make the rules for the UK forever. Unless the rejoin movement starts to make some headway.

"Did they not have some rule about wonky veg tho ,?"

“Bananas have always been classified by quality and size for international trade. Because the standards, set by individual governments and the industry, were confusing, the European Commission was ASKED to draw up new rules.

Commission regulation 2257/94 decreed that bananas in general should be “free from malformation or abnormal curvature”. Those sold as “extra class” must be perfect, “class 1” can have “slight defects of shape” and “class 2” can have full-scale “defects of shape”.

Nothing is banned under the regulation, which sets grading RULES REQUESTED BY INDUSTRY to make sure importers – INCLUDING UK wholesalers and supermarkets – know exactly what they will be getting when they order a box of bananas.”

C’mon Tom. This is one of the most debunked Brexit myths of all time.

"It’s Europe being a arse hole. Fried of mine wants to retire but the new rules means he may stay in the Uk because of those rules.

How is the Europe's fault? Didn't realise they held the vote. Lay the blame where it should be, on those who voted for it.

Maybe you need to look at how they are behaving.

They can come here but we can’t go there.

They lost the Uk cash cow. Still for us it was the right thing to do leaving

Maybe you can provide some proof they 'lost the cash cow'."

‘Lost the cash cow’-the UK, as the second largest economy in the EU, was the largest contributor to EU funds after Germany which is the largest economy in the EU. In fact the UK was one of the few countries in the EU that put in more money than it took out.

In other words ‘net contributions’.

There were only ten countries that were ‘net contributors’.

Germany

United Kingdom

France

Italy

Netherlands

Austria

Finland

Sweden

Denmark

Ireland

That shortfall has had to be shouldered by the remaining EU nations hence ‘lost the cash cow’. The other 18 nations take out more money than they put in. So, in essence, you had 10 nations carrying 18, now it is 9 nations carrying 18 which will soon rise to 19 and possibly even 20 with the accession of Ukraine and Turkey.

"Numpties believed you could leave the EU and stll have all the benefits of being in the EU .

While to Racists Numpties trashing the economy was a price worth paying if it meant Less Brown people wanting to come here in the small boats .

Take your pick "

They were coming here in trucks etc before that so not a Brexit issue, I,m neither racist or someone who believed we'd keep the limited benefits so sorry to dispute the petulance of someone who can't cope with losing a democratic vote by a huge turnout.

Losing is never an easy thing to accept.

We weren't in the common market once & now not in it again, things change but rarely do sore losers.

The wonders of democracy, eh!

It would be interesting to know what the winners have gained as a result of all the 'losers' losing.

"We joined a common market not a dictatorship you can't put a price on sovereignty... you wouldn't buy a house and let your neighbours tell you what you can and can't do in it "

Ah this old chestnut. Utter bullshit.

It's not a dictatorship if you have a veto on all decisions that are made, which is exactly what we had. We had extraordinary power and influence over the EU and the single market, the biggest in the world and we gave it all up. We are the first country in the world to vote to place sanctions on themselves, which is exactly what we did because people were conned by the liars.

This mythical 'sovereignty' argument is piss poor. We had elected MEP's and a government that had a veto on any laws we accepted, we no longer have that say and are suffering the consequences.

What we have seen here is democracy in action...

They gave England the vote. England voted and still some cannot fathom the reason of logic for others voting. It matters not except to the councillors and therapists charging many euros to rationalise the vote. The English voted leave

"Since the UKs utter stupidity in 2016 its not worth getting a holiday home.

What I can't understand is the utter moronic so called expats who voted leave not realising they would not be able to stay now the UK is out."

Please don't start on brexit! Every leading economist said it would be a bad idea but people chose their vote based on a bus a toad and a compulsive liar. Or just plain xenophobia. If you voted for bexit you are either thick or rich, check your bank account to figure it out

Well as far as Tom can remember, Mr Farage was leader of UKIP but never elected as a Parliamentry MP but was a Euro MP.

The motto here. Never worship false idols and never believe all you read. Buyer Beware as they say.
