The Chief of Police in Northern Ireland has banned his men from attending the Gay Pride event in Uniform citing reasons of neutrality. Last year in some cities the police were not welcome. What is going on here guys. It's all over the news

What? That is so wrong. Gay rights all the way, but now the police doesn't even go to the parades any more? They used to be near any and all parades. Why are the gay parades so special???

It's getting really ridiculous. 30 years ago people would have thought that this is an anti-gay statement, to not protect them. These days it's the total opposite and it feels like they get extra rights for no reason.

At least in my mind. Dunno.

In my opinion just treat it like any other parade. Couple uniforms on the side, and good is.

This isn’t about policing of the parade. It’s about officers marching IN the parade, in uniform. It’s something they have done previously and PSNI are now saying not to do it any more.

If other uniformed professionals are marching in uniform then the police should be able to as well.

Not really safe at the minute. Threat from republican dinosaurs. They already murdered a gay cop who was set up by someone (barman allegedly) in a gay bar.

Ohhh. Wait, I got that wrong then. Was not reading it properly.

That is fucked up. Why not? If you're off duty, you can do whatever you want with your life, as long as it's legal.

If you're a gay police officer, then why not attend a gay parade? Don't get this

I think you read it wrong again. Someone said they can't parade in uniform.

They shouldn't be in uniform if they're not on duty anyway.

From my limited knowledge of once seeing a George Michael video- there will be at least one cop in uniform there, possibly holding a large truncheon

Not what I heard. More to do with the more conservative elements of NI hierarchies flexing their muscle . Back to the 19th century …

Yeah it was. Republicans tried to murder a cop earlier this year. Those dinosaurs are intent on murder. Cops walking in uniform at pride, and going out after, would be easy targets.

I’m confused.

You stated that a cop was murdered, which seems to refer to the 1997 case.

Now you seem to be referring to a different case.

And you accuse me of not knowing what I’m on about?

Calm down, stop being so aggressive.

In 2023 MI5 have raised the present day threat in NI to “severe”, due to increased IRA activity and intelligence of attacks being planned. The danger is still very much there

Yes, threat levels have increased, but it is in nobody’s best interests to lie or exaggerate, as the earlier poster did.

As for your reference to the “ira”, you are probably referring to one of the splinter groups rather than PIRA.

Getting back on topic, it’s pretty sad to see a backwards step like this from PSNI.

No intention to sound condescending.

Thanks for clarifying that you meant the “new ira”. There are other splinter groups such as Continuity IRA, and when people simply refer to the IRA that typically refers to PIRA.

Uniformed soldiers haven't been on NI streets since 2007.

The gay RUC murder was in the Parliament bar in 1997 which no longer exists.

Reading between the lines this decision is as much about the cost of policing events as anything else.

Off duty members of the PSNI are free to partake while budget cuts mean those who are on duty are expected to police the parade rather than be paid to take part in it.

That’s a fair guess re reason for the change of heart.

There is also a strong element of the Establishment who don’t like seeing their police officers in uniform, openly supporting the Pride events.

Dinosaurs.
