Job refences - same organisation

Not sure if I'm worrying too much..

I've got an interview for a job in another department of the same council.

If I accepted the new job, would it reflect badly on my references who work for the same council if I under perform/fuck it up?

It's a job I'm not too keen on as it looks daunting and would possibly need them for other references for future jobs I apply for

If it's a job you're not too keen on why as you interviewing for it.

It will affect references as most employers (who ask for references) want one in connection with your current job.

It won’t reflect on them. They will be asked if they think you can do the role and they will be asked if they would rehire you knowing what they know about you now. If they answer both of those questions ‘yes’, they won’t be held accountable if you don’t rise to the expectations of the new job

Little option really

Previously was in the office but cut backs meant emptying bins, agrivating back knee and ankle injuries. An office based job has come up. It's either that or the dole as I can't keep doing current role any longer

No. A reference covers work you did not what you do next.

OP in my experience they rarely write bad references as they are scared it might come back on them plus they are generally so pleased to see the back of a bad employee that they dont jeopardise it. It sounds like you need this job charge for the sake of your health so go smash it!!

That too but don't want to get the people giving me a reference from my previous office work in a bad light seeing as they work for the same organisation that I'm applying for

Don’t worry about the references.

Focus your energy on how you can succeed in the new role, what support and development you’ll need , be positive - sounds like a good opportunity given the situation

Ok fair point. A few additions then:

A bad reference is technically illegal. The worst you can expect is a minimum reference ( dates worked, position). Sone employers operate a minimum reference only policy regardless, for this reason.

You won’t botch the job. Whomever assessed you as suitable for the new job did so in the basis they were capable to assess your capability. Trust that process, have faith in yourself.

Most jobs have a probation period. Don’t punch the boss, watch porn at work, or burn the plsce down. You’ll pass. That’s why it’s there.

It’s a new job, emphasis on new. You will learn new things, emphasis on learn. Don’t start expecting you should know everything before you start, or in 3 months. You won’t and aren’t expected to. That’s why it’s a new job.

Good luck

References are an opinion not a contract. Someone can be great at one job, not so in another and often for reasons outside capability eg team fit, culture etc.

Easy to say but stop worrying.

Yeah I'll be asking about training for the job. Yeah lacking confidence is a long standing issue for me.
