Could you move in together if you are not married?

Jump to newest

By *hagTonight OP   Man

From the land of haribos.

I was listening to one talking about it and it was interesting.

He was talking about memories from when he went to college and there a question came about it, he remembered how the teacher asked the class if you could move in together if you are not married.

So, if you could you would raise your hand and if couldnt do it, you wouldnt raise it.

There were 30 pupils in the class where 27 hands went up and 3 didnt, so the majority wouldnt mind doing it.

What about about you, could you move in together if you are a couple before getting married? I could and I wouldnt have any problems with it.

Personally, I dont see how a piece of paper makes a lot of difference to a relationship, it definitely comes down to personal choice

A good way to test the water is to book a holiday together. That can make or break a relationship.

TBF Marriage is a bit more than 'a piece of paper'.

It's a legally binding contract is my understanding of it.

I loose the Council Tax discount, end up having to clear up after someone else cos they don’t put things where I want them put.

You don’t have to move in together to get your free massages, infact I’d need one more if they moved in so I could de-stress

It’s 2023. Is this even a consideration these days?

And a marriage is not just a piece of paper. It’s a legally binding contract and you are agreeing to share your wealth in the event of a future divorce. It’s not something to be entered into lightly.

I was reluctant to move in with my bf without getting married cos it involved moving abroad. That was back in the 00s and he was very perplexed and embarrassed cos he saw everyone in the uk cohabited, no question about it. In my culture nobody did, no question about it. He was at the tender age of 22 so admittedly too young. Immigration laws changed with Brexit and for a stretch of months/years despite our marriage I had no claim to living here, so that was an interesting experience! Our kids are "legit" tho so that's something

I've lived with 2 different men, never been married.

Not sure I could do the marriage thing and living with me is complicated. I have a council house and I'm fucked if I'm putting anyone on the tenancy agreement.

So I'm more of a would live with someone not married type rather than married.

Yep. I very happily bought a house with my partner. We've been living together for six years now, we'll be married soon but I've never had any real issues about living with him. I enjoy it a lot. I don't think marriage will change the happiness I feel in having a home together with him.

We lived together for seven years before we got married.

I disagree that marriage is 'just a piece of paper'. If people don't want to marry for whatever reason I respect that, just don't dismiss my marriage in those terms.

Exactly. All relationships are about their meaning to the individuals in it. Dismissing cohabiting couples with the phrase

'Oh they're just living together' is equally disrespectful in my view.

We've lived together for over 6 years ,I have no interest in getting married at all.

Like others said I think it would be odd to never live with a person before you commit to marry them, they might drive you crackers.

'If marriage didn't exist, would you invent it? Would you go "Baby, this shit we got together, it's so good we gotta get the government in on this shit. We can't just share this commitment 'tweenst us. We need judges and lawyers involved in this shit, baby. It's hot!" ' Doug Stanhope

The party and celebration etc sure cool... The legal stuff? One could argue the reason we have binding contracts is due to a lack of trust.

When my father in law died his partner was not his next of kin because they weren't married. She was unable to do things that a NOK could. She said at the time she should have married him when he asked.

I think you either marry or you don't it's thankfully a personal choice for many in the west now. If you want legality there are other ways of achieving it

I'm not married but cohabiting.

For marriage, there are tax benefits and next of kin benefits should the unthinkable happen. Same could also be achieved through civil partnership I guess. Anyway, that piece of paper can be important in certain circumstances.

I get frustrated with HMRC, who, when they want money, class you as Living as a Married Couple and when you want money from them, they say no because you're not married.

Sorry, I got a bit romantic and mushy there
