Looking to do a day trip within about an hour or two from London this weekend.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, ideally lesser know scenic places, small villages with pubs and a flowing river would be most welcomed.

Leeds

Hitchin.

Riverside walks, quaint pubs plus a lavender farm.

St Albans is fantastic. Lovely river walks, there's a great old pub a walk down from the cathedral. Verulamium park is beautiful. Great restaurants as well.

In a similar vein, Harpenden. It's a bit quieter, easily navigated (the main centre of the town is along one big Roman road). Beautiful walks to be had, great food.

Ely is also beautiful - you can have a day trip into Cambridge if wanted but Ely in itself is quaint and with a fantastic bookshop, some great restaurants and lovely walks.

Bath is under 2 hours. It is a city but not huge. Plenty to see and do/eat

Reading

Windsor. Castle, cute town and riverside walks. You can also walk to nearby Eton.

So far shouts for St Albans and Windsor are good!

Oxford is a nice city to visit too although a little further afield, as are the Cotswolds with loads of little villages like you describe
