Honesty box

You have seen them in certain areas where people might leave farm produce or books or whatever and you pick something and leave the right money in the box. I always thought that is so wonderful to feel you can trust people to be honest. Many years ago used to live near one and bought lots of stuff all the time and never knew of any issue. How would an honesty box work near where you live?

Hopefully the money is in the box. There used to be an honest cafe in yorkshire where you cpuld go in, make a drink, have a cake etc and leave the money and or sit for a bit as there were seats and a bench. I am not sure if it's still there.

A few scattered about selling free range eggs around my area. Seems to work well. Random plants sometimes appear when someone has a glut of seedlings in front of a house.

That's excellent and lovely to see it is still a thing.

I saw some kids had various bits outside their house including some plants and a little sign saying 20p, 60p or £1 and a little honesty box. Obviously making some pocket money.

Same here, and they must be else the farmers wouldn't do it. We've had one a few times for plants outside our gate. Worked well.

If there was one near here the honesty box would honestly disappear.

I have seen them selling sweets or toys occasionally. It keeps them occupied for a couple of hours and out of mischief

I remember some years ago when our fridge died. Rushed out to replace it, was chuffed when the man who delivered it said he would take the old one and dispose of it for £20. I was talking to some work colleagues in Stoke on Trent and they laughed. Oh duck, around here you just leave something on the path outside and in the morning it's gone for free

That's sad but yes in most places probably will be the case. I just like old fashion honesty and trust though. Something very endearing about it

Somebody would probably nick the box, then try to sell it.

Absolutely, there's been a few times they've posted to say people haven't paid but there's always a bad egg somewhere

One of the local community fridges has one... in the main part it works but they've had to install cctv (one particular local couple were clearing it out of bread to feed the ducks)

There's often posts around this way about flowers going missing from graves

Duck & chicken eggs round my way... Those must be worthwhile as they're a constant, & everyone is a wannabee farmer round here
