1p Coins - do we need them?

In Your Hearts

Do they serve any purpose anymore? Round down everything to nearest 5 or 10p.

Pre 1992 coins contained 97% copper. With copper price sky high, probably worth melting them.

Post 1992 coin are copper plated steel and could still yield a lot.

Just a thought.

Unfortunately your idea would simply see everything going up in price very quickly.

Next time your petrol goes up 24p a gallon over night, you may think a little differently.

All prices would increase by a minimum of 5p every time.

haha you're confusing me now. Why would you need a penny to pay for something that was £1.99?

Granted you wouldn't get any change from a pound, but you don't need a penny to pay for anything .99

Australia got rid of 1c and 2c coins years ago. I used to buy masses of instant noodles that were priced 27c each, and put them all through as separate sales so they'd get rounded down to 25c.

My Nan used to say "Look after the pennies and the pounds'll take care of themselves!"

I save all my 1p's, 2p's and 5p's then cash then in when my jar's full.

I do it with £2 coins too.

I've really gotta get out more! lol

No thanks, I save mine in a jar and when I am skint towards the end of the month, what is in that pot can get me some milk or a loaf of bread. I do sometimes put it in the charity pot though if the shop has one

I visited Bulgaria, shortly after the Velvet revolution, and inflation was soaring...

The monetary system as so short of small change that we used to get sticks of chewing gum instead of pennies

They won't tho and why should they. One million sales means the loss of four million pence.

4.000.000 p is £40,000 what manufacturer is going to take that loss ?

They will round up to £1. The next increase has to be 5p which is 5%. No ones salary is rising that quickly.

Do you know what winds me up the most, waiting for the reciept! what is that all about? i buy a mars bar and have to wait for piece of paper saying the price! nevermind about pennies! ban the bloody reciept! rant over. god im a misery today!
