"Do we know much of his salary is actual salary and not image rights? Or is he just giving everything he earns from PSG to charity? If thats the case, then it is a very honourable thing to do - and more footballers should take note. A lot do give a lot to charity and have their own foundations but there are a LOT of mercenaries in the game, just n it for the money. A split between French and UK charities would have been a better option though I think." He has the foundation here. I would guess it would be his salary from that team and not any of his other earnings.

""Yet many with that level of wealth don't make those sort of gestures at all" Not that you or I know of anyhow. Charity is by definition secret. So what Becks is munificent but charity it ain't. " He'd only have ended up with 25% less his agent's take anyway so it's probably no great sacrifice.

" Charity, by definition, is not secret. Many give without asking for thanks but there is a lot of evidence now that those that give publicly encourage other rich people to give. Please don't assume to know what I might know or not. I rarely post a comment that I am unsure of.

" 2) I'm not sure a Parisian charity is the most appropriate recipient. Isn't there a worthwhile cause in/ near his birthplace?" ...this maybe due to the fact that Paris Saint Germain...who will be his employers are based in Paris.

"People need to take into account the way footballers are paid. Some take a lower salary in exchange for a payment for image rights, often this money is paid into an account in a tax haven. 10/12 year ago a footballer was quoted as saying during contract talks " the salary is fine, its the image rights that need tweaking" The player? David Beckham" ....is this the same David Beckham who is giving his salary to a childens charity in Paris?????

"Charity, by exact & pure definition, is absolutely secret. There is a no evidence whatsoever that those that give publicly encourage other rich or poor people to give. We just do not know nor can we know what people do in secret with their money." The definition has nothing to do with secrecy. The word comes from the Latin caritas. At it's purest definition you get to caring. I agree that we can't know what people do in secret with their money. There are people who help the wealthy give that money away and they know. There are very few completely secret transactions, especially now when charities have to look at the provenance of donations to ensure it is not dirty money. As to the evidence base the easiest read is Charles Handy's The New Philanthropists.

"How do you know he didnt want them tweaking so he could donate more to charity? Well he left Man U shortly after. I doubt he left because his charitable intentions were being hampered" He is a savvy business-man. I don't doubt for a minute that he has calculated that this gesture is worth more than keeping the salary in all sorts of ways. The fact is that he has made a generous gesture. I know of charities he has supported in this country and he has been generous with his time as well as money. The publicity he brings to those charities is sometimes worth more to them than any cash he might give. Tim Minchin is doing a gig for Shelter next month, there will be publicity about it and Shelter will use his name to fill the venue.

Fact is david Beckham has given more to charity than any of us ever will in our entire lives, and it's unbelievable people are slating him for it. Beckham has always been fantastic at promoting himself and his image and sure this is all part of that but it is still a huge amount of money and should be applauded

I do applaud him for it and think he has done exactly the right thing to pick a charity local to where he is earning the money - it has more meaning, lower transaction costs and gives him a stake in his new community.

"Waiting for those that put him down to tell how much of their salary they giving to children in need.......... Guy aint my best mate, but you gotta give him 100% credit for it." I give at least £10 to Children in Need every year, and with most of my salary paying my bills and my small amount of savings nowhere near what I owe to the bank, I don't feel the need to go on world tv and announce it. The fact that Beckham has chosen to do it on deadline day as a free agent (which means he could have signed tomorrow, next week or whenever) suggests it's as much about PR for his post football career than anything else. The money going to a local charity is great though, so fair play, but don't treat us as fools. Especially as the salary will be paid to a plc Beckham owns and will be tax deductible. This year I will be doubling my donation to Children in Need and going on BBC to announce it, possibly with Terry Wogan & Gaby Roslin at my side.
