Can we talk makeup for a second please

What foundation are you all using at the minute? I’m fed up buying new ones and hating them on my skin after wearing it a few times. I usually go for more matte/ full coverage types of foundation but some areas on my face can get quite dry and it doesn’t sit nice after a few hours, so I’m thinking of maybe trying something with a more dewy finish. Any recommendations would be helpful

I'm in the same boat with the addition that I'm immensely pale. My go to was Urban Decay All Nighter but it's been discontinued. Currently using Fenty Pro Filt'r and the colour match is great but it doesn't go on as smoothly or last as well as the Urban Decay did. The primer helps but it's just not the same and I am sad.

I went to Boots and had a free make up consultation with them, it was really good they tried different brand concealers and foundations for my skin type, I settled on the Boots own range in the end. Its worth it if there is a Boots near you that does the free consults.

Nars foundation but I have recently started using a Pixi oil based primer serum underneath that and it makes my foundation go on lovely and my face feels well moisturised all day.

I use a lighter BB cream through summer when my skin is healthier and has a more natural summer glow. Garnier BB Cream Oil Free Miracle Skin Perfector is my current go to. It's light and and barely visible but blends out most blemishes.

I didn't get on with it personally. The colour match was great and it looked great at first but for me it broke apart and came off my nose by lunch time, even with primers, powders and setting sprays. Couldn't get it to last at all.

Double wear note - it’s heavy, and looks awful in photos, but coverage is amazing. It can look a bit masky though. I ditched it for Il makiage.

I’m the same my skin is so pale it’s really difficult to get a good match without completely washing my face out. I had a colour match done at boots a while ago for their No.7 range and it turned out I was the lightest shade that they had. It’s so shit when they discontinue something that’s your go to

So I rarely wear anything more than mascara now but I used to work on makeup counters.

If your makeup isn't sitting well it may be you need to prep better with a primer first.

Or if it's certain patches it may be that you need to adjust skincare routine/moisturiser as our skin changes for seasons etc.

It's a fecking nightmare is all I can say

I got thet with urban decay. Just couldn’t make it work but it sets really really well.

I have tried all sorts but have found the Boots No 7 Restore & Renew foundation excellent.

It is neither dewy or matt but an in between that covers up any blemishes.

I’d would highly recommend the matching concealer too as that is the best that I have tried.

They only sell online but have a great colour match tool - and if they get it wrong they’ll refund you no questions asked.

It's a pain isn't it! It's better than it used to be. Used to only be three expensive brands that did anything I could wear. The lightest of most high street brands is still too dark for me though. It was so sad. I'm still in mourning!

I’ll definitely have a look into that. I think I need to stay away from the full coverage foundations and find something with a more medium coverage with having the dry patches on my face.

If you want a good long wear full coverage, I don’t think you can beat Estée Lauder Double Wear (they also do free shade matching service and free samples). It can is quite matte so make sure you moisturise well if you have dry skin. Other good full coverage options: Mac Studio fix, YSL All Hours, NARS Longwear Radiant. Good budget options: Maybelline FitMe Matte & Poreless or Loreal True Match. Primark actually do a dupe of double wear too that’s pretty good - I think it’s called Double Cover or something.

If you’re using a cream or lotion moisturiser ditch it for an oil (I adore no 7 beauty oil). It cleared my dry patches. Highly recommend it.

Just seen you mentioned about dry patches. Make sure you use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week. This will not only help to reduce and smooth out the dry patches but it will also enable your moisturiser to work more effectively.

Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation, has buildable coverage and still maintains a dewy finish, but the most important thing to concentrate on is your skin care i.e. cleanse, exfoliate, tone, serums (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C), a good eye cream and moisturiser, followed by a factor 50 sunblock (365 days of the year). Allow each stage to absorb, with a couple of minutes or so between. Then a primer followed by your makeup, because if you don't prep the skin correctly, your foundation and concealer won't give you the best results.

If you want dewy finish, try Estée Lauder Illusionist, YSL Touche Eclat Foundation, MAC Face and Body foundation or NARS Sheer glow foundation.

Good budget options: Bourjois healthy mix or Maybelline dream skin x

I’ve been using elf poreless putty primer and it’s been ok to be honest, it blurs my pores really well but I should probably look into something more hydrating.

I’ve got really rubbish skin anyway so it’s trial and error on what will break me out or not, when I find something that doesn’t I cling onto it

Anyone recommend a good contouring palette? My go to (KVD) is getting hard to get hold of. I’m olive skinned and usually tanned so something with a strong dark/highlight contrast.

Nars Sheer Glow usually in Siberia. It's gorgeous and feels light but provides good coverage. I apply with a damp beauty blender which makes a big difference too.

I've got a bit of a tan at the moment and I'm using MAC Studio Fix in NC10. I like it but it's not dewy and nowhere near as nice as Sheer Glow but the shade matches my skin well.

My skin is awful. And occasionally my skin goes through the worst dry and flakey phases but no matter what I do, nothing helps so I always have to ride it out with a crusty ass face. But if you haven't already tried getting to the root cause of the dry skin maybe look into that and some products to help?

You could also try Double Wear Light - that has the same staying power but not as heavy x

I really, really rate the Fenty hydrating primer (pink one). Even though I'm not totally happy with the foundation, it significantly improved how smoothly it went on so I can't wait to see how good a better foundation will be with it. It's lovely and hydrating and makes my face feel all silky.

Up My Own Arse Apparently

I've recently switched to skin tints instead of foundation and really prefer them. In particular I like the L'Oréal one and the new Maybelline one is probably my favourite. Still use a primer (wet n wild, cheap as chips about 6 quid) and set with loose powder. Lasts most of the day. I have combination skin, usual 49 yr old wrinkles but think that this looks more flattering than foundation.

Siberia is a fantastic shade if you're pale. It's probably the palest I've ever tried. Only downside is that it is a tiiiiiiiny bit on the yellow side but it's still fantastic.

Also, Maybelline roll on concealer in 95 cool ivory is a fantastic concealer if you're super pale.

Try mixing a little serum into it before applying and avoid powder on top and use a setting spray instead. That made a massive difference for me and it lasts ages!

My partner uses Tom Ford ,won't use anything else.

I don't know about make up myself except cost me a small fortune in Selfridges last xmas.

Just know he says after he puts it on in a morning lasts all day until night.

I don’t use a proper foundation, I use the Nivea bb tinted moisturiser or the Avon one. My daughter uses the brand that comes in pink and black (can’t for the life of me remember the name)

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m definitely swaying towards trying Nars out!

My skin is awful as well although it has been good for a few months so I can get away with wearing minimal makeup and letting my skin breathe a bit, which is nice. I’m on medication for my acne and I think that’s the cause of the dry skin but I know if I stop it, it’ll set me back. I’m just trying to work with what I’ve got at the minute and trying to keep it as hydrated as possible.

I use maybelline fit me, it's for normal to dry skin, I always used to suffer with the horrible dry cakey patches. And for setting I use rcma powder, never get any flash back with it and it lasts absolutely ages. I did try the rcma foundation but it's an art to apply as it's so thick so it's my special occasion one now

For priming I just use a good hydrating moisturiser, let that soak in, then elf putty where needed.

I watch Teresa is Dead on YouTube - dry skin, she shit talks a lot of things (so I don't think she's just selling things) but she's raved about this stuff. And Rituelle de Fille primer.

None of this shit is cheap, but she earns money reviewing things.

I’ve been using elf poreless putty primer and it’s been ok to be honest, it blurs my pores really well but I should probably look into something more hydrating.

I’ve got really rubbish skin anyway so it’s trial and error on what will break me out or not, when I find something that doesn’t I cling onto it

No7 stay perfect, it’s a really nice medium coverage and also the finish is natural- not overly matte or dewy, just right in the middle!

Also exfoliating can help with the dry patches

Do people really do all these things every day?! I'm a girl (woman, actually

) and I can't stand ANYTHING on my face. I tried some kind of anti aging cream described as "light, non greasy with SPF blah blah" and it felt like I had goo on my face all day. I do put suncream on, but only when I think it's necessary, and it hate it. No, actually, I abhor how it feels. It's horrid.

Unless I'm somewhere like where I am now (outdoor temps over 40°C) or it's obvious very sunny, I wash my face with water and that's it. I wear a wide brimmed hat, stay as out of the sun as I can and have to wear sunglasses all the damn time anyway (because I have feeble eyes).

Serious question, do people who put all these products on not feel like you've got a whacking great thick something on your face? Or am I just weird?

I obviously can't add anything useful to the foundation question, sorry. The last time I had makeup applied (professionally), I got as far as home before feeling so awful that I scrubbed it all off and went to the wedding bare faced, as I'd originally planned

In the summer I'm using Dr jart bb cream

And I've been loving elfs halo glow foundation

Its worth speaking to the girls on the beauty counters in boots. If you have your eye on a more expensive brand ask if they have any samples before splashing out on a full bottle

Some stuff feels heavy. Most doesn't.

When I hit puberty I became an instant oil slick. That's when I started using moisturiser - wash face, apply moisturiser at that stage, and the moisturiser was much lighter than the slick I'd stripped from my face.

I don't know if I've built up tolerance over time (most serums and shit don't feel like anything, moisturiser does, makeup does, but it's within bounds)... but I started in late primary school with "it feels better than what I just washed off"!

I use olay sensitive care day fluid. You can get it in Tesco. It has SPF in it. I hate heavy moisturisers in the daytime too but this in nice and light and soaks in wonderfully.

I was surprised at the coverage of the Maybelline one. Wee bit of concealer for any really red areas and it looks pretty flawless.

I use the inkey list polyglutamic dewy sunscreen spf30 it hydrates, primes and protects and it does act as a good primer.

I don't wear proper foundation though I use Dr Jart BB or spray some utan cbd tanning water on my face instead.

Like you Shivs, I had a colour match done on Boots, and also a make up consultation with them … the ladies in there are fab - particularly with my kind of lady!

They recommended a Color from their range, which seems to work and gives me no skin issues.

I can highly recommend the Oui Cherie gripping primer and setting mist. Absolutely love them. I used to only use Charlotte Tilbury or Huda but I have discovered HNB cosmetics and the coverage is amazing for the price. The concealer is fantastic too. I also BPerfect chroma cover luminous as it is so dewy and I get so many compliments. It’s not full coverage though more medium.
