No, I'm not talking about the new sex position everyone is doing these day! Does your company offer it and if so, is it something you use to your advantage?

We have it and I've wanted to ask my boss about potentially taking a two hour lunch (normally one hour) while starting half an hour earlier and finishing half an hour later so I can go to the gym without going stupidly early or going when it's packed. The problem is I still have a 9-5 mindset and feel like I'd be taking liberties as I'm only going to the gym

So long as the work is done, that's what it's there for.

Obviously always check with the boss that it's not going to interfere in anyway. But don't feel bad or anything.

As long as you keep track of it, it's amazing. Just don't overuse or abuse it, that's when you can get caught up.

Yes, I use it to it's advantage. We can also build up time each day to take in bigger blocks which is what I usually do. 30 minute lunches with start and finish time unchanged and I can take a full day off here and there or an afternoon when I need it.

No I don’t have that option but I don’t see any harm in asking if that option is there for you. As long as you’re making up the hours and getting the work done I can’t see there being an issue.

Without sounding arrogant Joe, I'm currently in a job where I'm given much autonomy. I don't have to go cap in hand to ask my boss for x, y and z. Thankfully I'm not micro-managed (and I'm not suggesting that you are). If the situation ever changed for me I would be looking for another job. And I'm also thankful that I have this flexibility because most people don't.

As long as I don't lose focus on my duties and am meeting my goals and objectives then it's all good. It's swings and roundabouts and give and take. Most employers should be flexible.

Unfortunately not, I wish my job had a flexi time option though. I'm job hunting again for this very reason, I like my job but the complete lack of flexibility doesn't work for me. If the option is there then use it to your full advantage.

I love flexi time . My sleep schedule is a nightmare so sometimes I start work at 730 other days at 10 am.i take a half hour lunch most days but can take longer if I want to fit in a cheeky lunchtime social.

I love flexitime and could not go back to rigid 9-5. Can start any time I like between 6 and 11am and finish any time between 1.30 and 7pm. Can take a lunch between 30 mins and 2 hours. It's brilliant. If you aren't working in a customer service or retail based job I think it should be offered across the board, makes work/life balance so much easier. I can work 15 extra hours a month and then take two extra days leave off the next month. So essentially 24 extra days off a year (although I work the hours on different days in a way I choose).

I think it's a great Idea and any boss should want to keep their staff happy, the only pitfall I can see from the boss point of view would be if everyone wants the same treatment then there could be problems keeping the business running steady, not knowing what your employment entails and how many workers there are it's hard to tell if it would be affected though.

Employees need to use common sense and be flexible if required by the boss.

It all depends on if there is cover and if its going to be a regualr thing as others may want to take longer breaks during that time to attend business etc.

Where I worked a few years ago the boss was decent and allowed a few of us to complete our work over 4 days but it was never a fixed day, and most of us got the day off we wanted. There was also a choice of a few wantinng to work w/e's and others w/d's

Show some flexibility mate and don't get ticked off if the boss has to stop you going one day as he/she is doing you a favour

Kinda. Although as I work more than my hours I see it as a quid pro quo arrangement.

We've certainly become more "grown up" since covid and look to balance work needs with real life.

My biggest issue is I tend to train late lunch (as back to back before then) and so end up eating big at 330. (I also IF so that's my first proper meal)

I definitely don't plan to abuse it and only use it for the days I go to the gym. I suppose I just need to check with core hours and guess I'd also hate to put them in a position where they'd have to say no.

That a bit of what I worry about too. If I know there's a deadline then I don't mind planning around it but would hate to use flexi-time during the hour I might be needed.

That's a very good point. I suppose I'll never feel comfortable working outside that rigidity unless I do it.

That's really cool! I don't think we ha that much leeway in terms of hours worked but that genuinely sounds like bliss

Don't get me wrong, my boss is lovely and always says I can go to her if I have any troubles. It's good that you're given autonomy and I'm sure she would give me the same, but maybe I'm overthinking in terms of how it would work in reality compared to in practice.

We can start any time +/- 1 hour of our start time and then finish 9 hours later. So start and finish early one day, start and finish late the next.

No need to agree it with anyone in advance. Just have to be in the office working if we have meetings or visitors.

Definitely helpful with the lack of annual leave and with the thousands of school things you feel guilty towards if you don't attend

I probably wouldn’t use it even if it was available. there wouldn’t be any reason that I’d need to, and I’d end up taking a advantage of it a little because, well I’m extremely lazy

If it’s only half an hour in the morning and at the end of the day that you’d need to make up, it doesn’t sound like it would be too difficult to manage, especially if you’re going to the gym in the morning anyway.

You say that but it's amazing for medical appointments, even hair appointments even needed. Those times a delivery or repair guy or whatever says they can only do between x hours.If you need to get that shopping in before a party or whatever.

Definitely easy to overuse and abuse if you don't check yourself. But the freedom to not be locked down, or have to take a day off for that one small thing it's one of those things that you don't realise until you can use it.

I just meant because of the shift pattern that I have, I wouldn’t need it for anything like that anyway. But yeah I imagine it would be really useful to have that option there for people who do need it.

A lot of jobs these days don't have that 9-5 luxury. If something needs doing you just do it even if you have to work well into the night and have early rises too. I have done my fair share of that. I am not advocating is right but the reality is that it happens a lot.

It's rarely been the case as it's generally seen as the end of the working day so could be looked at the next day.

So if anything urgent occurred during one of the hours you were at the gym the longest it would wait is two hours, far less than over night.

Do it, adjust your work to fit your life if you can...your life is by far the most important of the two
