The once great game of rugby league is now very much a dying sport run by sky TV ,it is now streets behind rugby union and the constant rule changes and fast tracking expansion teams into super duper league has made the game a laughing stock in sport . The champions for the last two seasons have finished 5th in the league ,and as the previous poster said you don;t really have to take it serious until September and the league is pointless .

Best sport in the world as another poster says sky has in my view ruined it as there is more to life than pooper league championship rugby is left in lurch.

Do not get me started on dual registration deals its purely to keep super league players fit. I take my hat off to sheffield and others that realise its a slippery slope towards being a feeder club once that happens the club loses its indentity.

League players are fitter in general but i still prefer union. The parts of the game that the league decided weren't necessary and just slowed down the professional game actually make union more interesting for me. Line outs, rucks, mauls and proper scrums rather than the girly ones in league are what makes union a sport for all sizes of man. League just appears to be 13 backs each side running at one another. Dull.

13 backs? The forwards in league are as big as the forwards in union just much quicker and fitter and proberbly give you the impression they are backs.

League is my game. Nothing wrong with Union, I certainly don't need to attack it. but I just prefer league.

I appreciate why some give Sky a Hard time but I believe they've probably saved the sport in the professional arena as a 'competitive' league in this country.

I used to play Rugby League many years ago, great game to play. I was 2nd row forward and the scrum down was proper muscle v muscle. These days the scrum down might as well not be there, it's embarrasing to watch. I believe the rule changes haven't done any good to the game as a spectacle or to play in.

I got a helluva shock when I joined the RAF and they asked for any rugby players to step forward. In my naivety I did just that, not realising the Forces played the thugs game of Rugby Union!! I wondered why there was 30 plus subs of us getting into our kit instead of 26 plus subs. Got out onto the pitch to find 2 teams of 15 - wtf I thought. Anyway, first time I got the ball and went to run I was tackled and then was buried under a mass of bodies!! Fooking hell, I thought, is this a gays game or what!! hahaha. Then the ref penalised me for not letting go of the ball!! Baptism of fire into the Union game.

Very awkward at first to play under Union rules after playing for years under League rules.

I watch both codes on the telly now and sorry to say I prefer to watch Union, but in my heart I am still a League man. Well I am a Yorkshireman after all.

As the old saying goes:

Rugby League is a thug's game played by gentlemen.

Rugby Union is a gentleman's game played by thugs.

I can verify that I got into more punch ups in Union than I ever did in League!I had the black eyes and very large bruises to prove it at the time

Sorry i wasn't clear. What i mean is because of a total lack of union style forward play league appears to be 13 backs per side. I'm well aware of the players size etc but they don't get involved in any of the areas of the game i highlighted in my first post. Sorry to have been misleading.

I wouldn't agree about the fitness levels either, 20 years ago certainly but the advent of true professionalism in Union has transformed the game at top level. In fact, i would go so far as to say that a lot of Union teams are now better prepared than their League counterparts due to the clubs having more money. Certainly the International set ups show how far League has lost ground. I much prefer Union but i would much rather watch League than wendyball!

Yes and League players really struggle when they switch to league... Couple of games and they are in the international team!

Ashton, Sonny Bill Williams, Henry Paul, Andy Farrell etc etc etc

Fact; league players are fitter, stronger, faster and have better core skills. I have coached both codes so have seen the difference first hand.

The Union clubs are more in debt than the League clubs.

There is still lots of strength in the club league and I bet the RFU wishes it would get the attendances they get at Warrington, Hull, Wigan, Leeds and Saints.

Admittedly the international League game does not get well supported but that is because us club supporters are so tribal!

I've played both codes (see earlier post) and reckon that in terms of fitness the League wins. After all the Union game has 15 in a team - lots more hands to pass the ball to! League has 13 and have to run more to keep the game more open and faster.

Having said that I now watch more Union than League. The rule change on scrummaging in League hasn't done any favours in terms of the crowd being able to see who is the more powerful team.

I have always wondered who would be the better team..league or Union?..back in the sixtires, seventies etc surely it had to be league?..as they were professional, and Union players trained in the bar or their local club..

Things are obviously different these days though, especially as union players are full time pro's as opposed to Amateurs who had to do a days work down the mines before a game..(well, in wales anyway...while the English players worked in their surgery's and solicitors offices etc)

"I have always wondered who would be the better team..league or Union?..back in the sixtires, seventies etc surely it had to be league?..as they were professional, and Union players trained in the bar or their local club..

Things are obviously different these days though, especially as union players are full time pro's as opposed to Amateurs who had to do a days work down the mines before a game..(well, in wales anyway...while the English players worked in their surgery's and solicitors offices etc)"

There were two games a gew years ago..Wigan vs Bath one in union format and one in league format, Wigan won both..

I have seen quite a few cross code games and never yet seen unuin tean win either game. Quite simply any team that playd a fast passing game whether it be union rules or not will more often than not win hence keague teams being successful.

You did have a team that hadn't seen each other.....full of our U19s and even Paul Wood?

Dont get me started about dual registration and clubs selling their souls and identity to satisfy super league clubs.
