Logic doesn’t matter

I’m a big fan of common sense. Logic for the win and all, but it gets me in trouble all the time…

What I really struggle with in life is dealing with people that don’t care about logic and evidence based reasoning.

Example:

They fuel up their standard car with premium petrol every third time at the petrol station to clean their engine… They continue doing it regardless what evidence has been provided.

Or we’re at a friend’s place and my phone is in another room plugged into a multi usb charger. While they boil a full 8-cup kettle for a single cup of tea I get asked to go to the living room and unplug my phone as it’s probably at 100% by now and it would be wasting electricity. My response is that it makes no difference as it stops drawing power, usb-c, wattage, amps, negligent consumption bla bla bla and pull up evidence with a 2 second google. Their answer is “that might be true, but our election cal cabling is quite old so it might be different”… no… no it’s not.

Yes, I’m aware it’s their money/fuel/place and thus the more correct answer would have been “ok, I’ll do that now or “ok, you do you” with no follow up commentary.

I’m used to my statements either being heard/validated or my current knowledge on a subject matter is proved to be lacking/plain wrong. Happy with either. I struggle with this particular set of friends as they simply don’t care what is correct as it’s “irrelevant”.

Go on, roast me for trying to argue a point even though I know I should just shut up, given I know it makes no difference. It’s just so hard to shut up sometimes…. They are lovely people, but this anti-evidence and random false claims really frustrate me sometimes.

Anyone else in similar situations or on the receiving end even? Maybe you don’t care yourself about what is right or wrong as long as it doesn’t really impact your life and doesn’t mean you have to admit to having outdated views?

I think, with my increasingly old age, I'm erring towards the fuck it ethos. Slowly but getting there.

I'm not going to say shut it because sometimes you can focus on the little things and find them rather irksome - that's fair enough. Equally, sometimes people aren't too fussed.

You can't make people listen. They might hear you but they don't have to listen to you. If I found spending time with someone increasingly irksome/felt like I wasn't being listened to, I'd probably stop spending as much time with them so I could save my eyes rolling out of their sockets.

I'm not going to say everyone but many are resistant to change. It doesn't matter there's a demonstrable better way many will stay with what they know. You can say they're resistant to reason but I think it's more resistance to change

Yes.

That's a tried and trusted method to stop common sense escaping and any stupid entering the body.

You have to ensure all orifices are plugged though. May take more than one pair of hands.

I try to not give a fuck. It’s not that easy. I let 95% just slide right past me, but the 5% still get me frustrated more than it should. Haha

And yes, I‘d say my biggest flaw is failing to not accept people’s wilful ignorance or unwillingness to accept change. Hence the thread as the mrs in these situation looks at me thinking „seriously, just let it be!“ I try. I do. It‘s just the volume of crap certain people sometimes spew becomes seemingly impossible to ignore.

This is exactly why light bulbs should be changed quickly and you should never stand directly below the fitting if you want to a avoid the electricity leaking onto you and giving you a shock.

O.P. I have EXACTLY the same , How to Choose your Friends book as you.

Number 1 priority is Do they boil kettles like I do ? number 2 is Do they know how phones charge ? 3 Obvs is .... Do they put premium in their car every third fill up .....

In fact ... i'd fuck anyone twice nightly who knew that stuff.

and like you ..... when i'm dying.... i'll wish i'd taught more people my ways and not just enjoyed their company more.

I kid you not, we stood in front of a church a few years ago, and even though I pointed out the sign that said it was built in the 19th century. Their response was “Sometimes the signs are wrong, you can see that it must be much older”. Tour guide corrected them and said it was well recorded and they responded “hmm, not sure about that”.

That I could let slide as the tour guide was annoyed enough.

It does wear down on my poor little brain.

They aren’t stupid. They both have PHDs. It just seems they using their critical thinking very selectively….

I’d love to be able to not want to correct them given they don’t care and will just respond with “doesn’t matter” or something like that.

Like I said, I try and manage to let things slide by that are obviously wrong. Sometimes my ignorance-acceptance-jar overflows though and I feel like the next BS thing they say will be called out regardless of what it is…. And then I get in trouble by the mrs for causing them discomfort.

At least when one of our other friends is with us who struggles with this as well sometimes simply makes a really stupid statement just to get me to smirk and that resets our BS-acceptance-jar for the both of us.
