Decorating - choosing colours

So a friend has decided that my house needs decorating, and that I can't be trusted to choose my own colours... Apparently magnolia walls and white ceilings are very last century.

It's been suggested that my kitchen needs to "lean warm (for the morning and because you're shaded west), be not too pale (for the morning), but not be super warm because west afternoon light tends to be very warm". "I tried to find a desaturated yellow and I think I'm looking at beiges ??".

Beige! How is that different from magnolia!

What does everyone think? Please send colour samples via gallery photos...

'lean warm''desaturated yellow'?

I choose a colour I like and put it on the wall.

Wasn't there a paint called 'elephant's breath'?

My house is based around the ocean - stark white, silver, deep charcoal grey with green/blue accents + tones

You need to think of your theme, ie, mallard duck - and then build your colour board using the various colours. It's very satisfying

We used to always go for a basic colour eg very pale lilac then use upholstery, curtains etc as accents. This summer we're branching out and have some very unusual wallpaper

The ‘elephants breathe’ is a farrow and ball paint. Kinda beige/grey nice colour

Farrow & ball have some lovely colours so do the Dulux heritage range.

Farrow & Ball Shaded white and a feature wall f&b stiffkey.

You can get the f&b paint mixed at b&q in valspar which would be cheaper.

Warm colours make a room small.cool colours make a room look bigger.Avoid any yellow, you won't stay in that room very long. Its subconcious. No airline has ever used yellow in the aircraft.Mcdonalds originally used yellow in their eating areas to encourage people to leave quickly."Blue and green should never be seen except with white in between".The finish is also important,Silk,Satin etc,and only use an emulsion that has "Vinyl" in it's finish description.Cheap paint is not the same as good paint cheap.

Which is what colour? Red ? Brown (wood)? Black (iron rings around the cask)? Pale green (pinot grigio)?

Call me old fashioned, but shouldn't the name for a colour tell you what colour it is?

Farrow & Ball are great and so is Sanderson paint, if you can get it. For the love of testicles stay away from Fired Earth: the quality and durability of their paint is sub par.

Failing that I would just get rid of your "friend', and I can introduce you to my friends William Morris and Kelly Hoppen.

Purple is indeed a calming, soothing colour.

As a combination of blue and red it effectively, perfectly balances the cold with the warmth

I wouldn't recommend Red in a bedroom, It's a bit intense but depends on the shade.

I just go for colours I like.

My hallway is sage. My kitchen has touches of light blue but it's mainly overtaken by white as that's the colour of the units. Lounge is classic grey. I have teal in some rooms. Navy in others and yellow in others.

There is a lovely yellow available in wilkos called happy yellow, it's just the right level of yellow to be pale enough for all walls but not in your face. If you like brighter they do a bumble bee yellow...I wanted it but was told no it's too bright

Tonypandy.

The entire house was matte pale gray trade emulsion, except the 1 wall which is a peacock blue (dark blue/green)

Ceilings are white mixed with a bit of the peacock paint.

Under the stairs is grey, and features white, green, blue and glittery black stars and planets, courtesy of a nine year old.

She is available for cheap.

I enjoy bouncing off trends. Not, this is so hot for spring 2023 I must redo my entire place.

But - we're subconsciously affected by what we see around us. I know my tastes have shifted gradually in response to what I surround myself with. Dark stifling beige was hot in the 90s, in the 00s and 10s we decided it was dark and stifling. So if I'm going anywhere near a trend, I want to know what's coming, not going, hopefully meaning I'll like it longer. (Specifically longer term decor trends, less fashion - it's easier to buy a pair of jeans than paint a kitchen)

Plus looking to what's practical. It may (apparently, the internet says) be incredibly chic to decorate your kitchen and bathroom in sheets of the finest marble, but if you have kids, can't handle the goddamn upkeep, or aren't made of money, then fuck that.

I do look at the different tends and see what I like or not. But I still think people should decorate the way that feels right for them, they're the ones who have to spend a heck of a lot of time in that space.

My hallway is currently a very dark green, I happen to like green but also it hides the kids handprints. Why do they insist on wiping their hands on the wall as they walk up stairs? Little shits

Oh I agree. I've been decorating and I've been guided by trends, but I don't decide on that basis.

Warm is in and beige is back. You want your house to feel warm, inviting, and invigorating, so no more cool colours!

I don't want that, and have not chosen warm colours. (But green is becoming more popular, and hey, I thought that was a good idea, so green features in the choices I've made. Not the greens people are talking about, though, I picked my own)

If you have a piece of art you would always keep, choose colours it has in it or are complimentary.

The artist probably understood colour better than you and it’s to your taste, not your friend’s.

If ceilings are white a good tip for picking wall colour is to cut out a small rectangle out of white paper and place it over the chosen colour, stands out more that way.
