Has anyone ever done these DNA tests, to see where their family is from?

Any surprises? Shocks?

Would you ever do this?

Ancestry DNA tests are done by comparing your DNA with others that the company has in their database. Therefore there can be wide discrepancies between results, depending on which company you use and how comprehensive their database is.

It’s basically a vanity thing and not really worth much.

Ancestry... They break it down in percentages. I was mainly from various areas of UK. Small percentage Irish and the 2% Scandinavian. Was hoping for something more surprising and exotic

I am trying to make the point that no company can be entirely accurate.

The best you can do is use every company’s database and compare the recurrent traits. Each one will have traits that don’t appear in someone else’s, so you either ignore those or pick the ones you like.

Sorry, it was actually a text link - Discoverme is the study name. So, if your GP practice is signed up to it, you may get an invite to participate too

I want to do it. I know my grandad was half Chinese and id love to find out more about that. And I believe my Nan had Jewish ancestry.

My knowledge is that my family are from Jamaica but I’m black. So I’d love to know more about where in Africa I’m from. It’s so hard to follow that stuff via documents so an ancestry test would be fun in that sense.

It’s funny my Chinese ancestry came through strong in my daughter. Multiple people asked me when she was much smaller if her mum is Chinese or East Asian (She’s not)

100% Swedish/Scandinavian. Some would probably go like "Raaaah, Viking!" but half of all men in Sweden belong to the same line. Does make me related to Alexander Hamilton and General Robert E Lee. So time for a musical rebellion, in longships.

I'm unlikely to be surprised as I know I'm a bit of a mongrel. I know for sure that there's all manner of European ancestry (mother's side) along with some Middle Eastern, Slavic and North African (father's side) so I wouldn't be shocked to find even more.
