In August, the cap on alcohol tax ends, and it's been announced that it will now be taxed by volume, as per Scotland.

With the new levies, bottle of spirits are set to be hit with an estimated 10% price-hike.

As much of a pisser as it will be to those who just like a quiet tipple, it's going to do serious damage to the hospitality industry, at a time when pubs are already a breaking point through other rises.

It won't be long before Carry On Henry's "Sex Enjoyment Tax" is brought in!

It's why most bottled & canned beer producers have reduced Alcohol strength without publicity so check your beers & compare.

More profit for them if not price reduction.

It's drinkflation and shrinkflation.

Four pints in many a pub still costs more than a bottle of spirits in a supermarket.

The disparity between the cost of drinking out and in is now so vast we rarely bother (not that we drink much anyhoo). These days it's a rare occasion we go out, unless it's for a fab social or a special occasion.

The price of soft drinks in pubs and bars grinds my gears and few do 'designated driver' deals. The mark up on post mix soft drinks in particular is ridiculous, but that's where profits are made, likewise on food.

We have a cupboard full of booze from the last 6 Xmases yet to be opened. I doubt any duty increase will hit us too badly.

I don’t mind alcohol prices increasing. I’d rather they didn’t but its a luxury after all.

People will have something else to moan about over their drink.

The per unit minimum cost in Scotland is a minimum retail price and only affected the super cheap stuff like the pallets of 2L Cider being sold cheaper than bottles of Coke. Businesses were not allowed to price hike/gouge if the product was already sold at or above the retail minimum.
