"The idea is lower emissions. Less nasty particles in the air. Healthier air for people to breathe. Less lung disease etc. If you can do all that on about the same performance, range and cost … why wouldn’t you?" Just the 70% more emissions created to build Electric/Hybrid cars, according to a recent study of all automotive manufacture by Volvo.Chile is powering fork lift trucks with Hydrogen whilst we are stil chasing electric despite being at least three nuclear power stations short of the generation capacity we need.

Last mot my diesel equipped with two cars and two dpfs showed 0 ppm on emissions, it was lower than the machine could read.

"Just the 70% more emissions created to build Electric/Hybrid cars, according to a recent study of all automotive manufacture by Volvo." You can slice the data a thousand different ways to support entirely different arguments. Emissions affecting global warming are a separate thing from emissions affecting air quality (let’s call the latter health, shall we? Might be clearer). Embodied carbon in the manufacture, transport, etc of vehicles can mean something very different if you build it into a whole life-cycle assessment. And that can work out very differently again depending on what you take as a ‘normal’ lifespan for a car in the UK (or elsewhere). For example, I was frustrated when I dug into the official UK Gov sustainability studies and found that every calculation was based on the idea that a new car in the UK only has a four-year lifespan before it is removed from the roads. Four years! Ridiculous. The ideal solution, with cars as much as any products, is to reduce consumerism. Use what we have less often, more wisely and for longer. But our governments are contradicting that with assumptions that we should all dump old cars and lease new ones. Well-intentioned low emission zones force many to sell/scrap perfectly good cars and buy newer ones. The point then is - if you’re going to buy a new car anyway, then which kind should you buy? At that point there’s little practical argument against a hybrid or an EV right now. And I say that as a dyed-in-the-wool petrolhead with two classic sports cars sat beside my hybrid in the garage.

Exactly.lets not forget the production of batteries. The ingredients don't lie on the surface waiting to be picked up.They are mined with heavy equipment producing emissions, shipped, processed, produced, shipped again, more emissions.Ice engines are aluminium and can be recycled, batteries aren't.They are the new Asbestos/Nuclear waste. You could fill a container for shipping with batteries for £2,500 now it's over £11,500.Who's picking up the cost of that.It sure as hell isn't the manufacturer.

"I’m got a taxi home last night in a hybrid taxi. It had a full tank of fuel and a full battery, and an estimated range of just over 500 miles. With the cost of fuel and electricity and considering my diesel car had a range of around 600 miles what’s the point?" Electric is much better for the environment, so they burn Gas a fossil fuel at a power station to make the electricity. Win win....... somehow? Electric cars are only the answer for rich people with both fuek types, use Electric on short journeys around town & diesel for long trips.

Also, driving around with 2 technologies sounds like more weight. More weight, more energy, more wear (vehicle and road), more road damage.
