Completely agree with you.

One of those on board had dived the wreck a number of times a couple of decades ago and his company was bringing artifacts up, including one large piece of tge ship itself - that they called 'the big piece'. Their defence was that all artifacts were recovered from tge debris field and they dudn't actually disturb the wreck itself.

Red tape is boring and frustrating but this sub is a strong example of why it's there. Humans have evolved as a species and society through a lot of trial and error. Error being people dying. The CEO was very smug about ignoring those hard earned lessons and got himself and 4 other people killed because he thought he knew better.

The loss of life saddens me.

I would have liked to have half their courage.

Because of people like them we know more of the world around us, above us and beneath us,

If they had to die, then I am glad that they died doing something that excites them.

As one of them said , 'If you want to be safe, don't get out of bed.'

It's laughable that there exist people who don't get past their own front gate most days yet make huge displays of reverse snobbery and jealousy and deride explorers immediately after their deaths simply because they pursue their interests.

They did something with their lives.

All carry risk and death but people wouldn't cheer at the death of five builders killed on dicky scaffolding ...... would they ?

I've been Scuba Diving since I was 15 so understand the Risks, Pressures and the Enjoyment of Sub Sea exploration. I feel sorry for those 5 in the ROV and even more for their Family and Friends. As far as not being a nice way to die, you need to have some understanding of the Pressure the ROV was at and understand it would have been the Quickest and Painless death anyone could have. Sad so many are ignorant enough to suggest ANY death is anything but terrible.

Depends on if the media were counting down to their time of death with details of how they were likely to be feeling and how horrifying their death would be.

We are all consumers of the media. So, the media make what we want to consume. Consequently we should not complain if we are treated to hours of speculation about 5 rich guys in a submersible rather than 500 poor migrants on a fishing boat. It is what we want.

I regret it if there is any premature loss of life but surely that is the nature of life. It is to be lived and enjoyed. The object should not be simply to survive. The 5 were using their fortunes to buy a better experience in life. The 500 were risking their lives to experience a better life.

Public interest is linked to the wreck of the Titanic. The film of the Titanic. Books of the Titanic. Survivors and relatives of the Titanic ...... if the submersible was just diving for no reason there wouldn't have been any reports about it .. just as there weren't any reports on the 50 test dives they did. Then it became a mystery when it disappeared....

Coverage of this story cannot be compared fairly to the coverage given to a sinking vessel... though I do understand people trying to demonise others in order to make a comparison.

So basically it all comes down to the fact that you have been told they were wealthy; based on which you make a massive assumption that they “don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves”.

I’ve posted about this in another thread elsewhere, but there are things I’m uncomfortable with surrounding this event.

The loss of life is regrettable and for their families especially tragic. They were taking part in a dangerous pursuit for adventure and would have been very aware of the risks involved before embarking, by choice. To a certain degree, this mitigates the grief for their families. Many of us on fab willingly partake in sports or hobbies that are dangerous and can result in loss of life. That isn’t dissimilar to what was happening here.

Yet, a week or two earlier 500 migrants are lost at sea trying to reach Europe to make a better life for themselves and their families. One event gets international rescue effort and 24 hour rolling news coverage that is still continuing. The other is a footnote in the news. Which event involved five ultra rich people? Where should our concerns and sympathy lie?

Another aspect with which I’m uncomfortable with is the activity itself. 1200 people lost their lives onboard the Titanic, and for many the wreck is their grave, their final resting place. I do not believe that it should be used as a tourist attraction. The dive wasn’t for scientific research.

The bottom line to all this is that it was an avoidable tragic event.

Somewhere along the line it was somebody's ego running the show, wanting to make a name for themselves, cutting corners.

The ceo refusing to hire experts with 50 years of experience because younger people are more interesting and have imagination. Goes a long way in to the mindset of what their goal was.

Even Tower of London, though that is only a total of 22 people, but still.

Bottom line is they are history its sad but the chances of them dying were heightened by the journey, they knew the risks, they signed up for the risks and they paid the ultimate price, its sad but i for one can't dwell on sad news in fact i don't entertain any news as a rule most of its negative not sure why but c'est la vie

Any loss of life is sad but given that you don't get to be a billionaire by caring about others and there were two of them and a son on there. I doubt any billionaire would shed a tear if I died in an accident at sea.

The MD was also in there and he intentionally didn't attempt to get his vessel examined and certified by experienced professionals on the basis that "safety is pure waste".

I wouldn't wish death on any of those four but I'm finding it hard to summon up any emotion for them.

The fifth guy with all his knowledge and experience of the Titanic is the only one I have sympathy for.
