Maybe somewhere with a beach? Or nice museums? Or great place for shopping? Or whatever?

Tell me where you’d go on just a day trip?

South Wales

Barry Island.

It’s got a beach, a funfair, cafe’s, scenic walk, a history (Gavin & Stacey etc etc).

It’s in Wales, which is a beautiful part of the World (close your eyes and hold your nose if ever going past the Steelworks).

There’s a few places we’d recommend! A favourite of ours for a day out is Flamborough north landing beach.. beautiful location and it looks almost tropical on a sunny day

If you’ve got a weekend to spare then head to the Cotswolds, chippy is one of our favourite places in the world.

So, Winchester is absolutely beautiful and not too far from you. Great and interesting history, slightly overpriced food but some great meals to be had.

St Albans is lovely for a day trip - fantastic food, great scenery and easily accessible. Some interesting places to potter around as well. In a similar vein - Oxford, esp during the holidays is lovely. Cambridge is better though! Both are on the pricier end of day trips though.

The Peak District is incredible - probably better if not relying on public transport though.

If I lived down your way I'd love to do at least some of the Seven Sisters walk - you can get the train quite easily and do as much or as little of it as you want to.

Oh and the Cotswolds! Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe. They'll both be rammed during the holidays though.

I would second Winchester, its only about an hour from Waterloo. Lots of lovely stalls if you go on a market day, the cathedral is a good visit too if you like history. It is a bit posh and expensive, but you also go through lots of lovely countryside on the train x

Buxton is lovely and quaint and has a brilliant looking spa I'm very keen to try. This summer I'm aiming to do some sunrise walks up Mam Tor etc, last year I was too unfit to do it but I can now. Can't wait.

East London

Brighton for a good old-fashioned trip to the seaside.

You can have a wander down The Lanes, have lunch in a little cafe, spend some time on the beach-paddling in the water, eating ice cream and wandering around the little businesses on the beach front, sight see for a few hours, dine at Riddle and Finns, then have an evening drink in one of the many bars where can make friends before you head home on the last train to London.

Oh Bath is beautiful! Not only do they have one of the best bookshops in the country (why yes I'm biased) but it's so dreamy to walk around. Quite hilly though but it's lovely. Esp the market opposite that big bridge. Oh and the tourist favourite area of the houses which I can't remember the name of.
