Tom sadly wonders about the lost submarine that went to view the Titanic ship that sank after hitting an iceburg. He hopes they all survive. How many more lives will the Titanic take? Sadly it's all over the news. What's going on here guys ?

Tbh I'd never be interested in going down what is essentially a very deep graveyard.

There's enough footage available online if you're curious with paying ridiculous sums of money and (as occurred) potentially losing your life just to view a dimly lit wreck.

It shouldn't be a tourist destination to me, but then I kinda feel the same about the WTC Museum.

Tom knew a solitary soul who died at sea in a storm. He was never found but at the memorial service a friend placed flowers in the shape of a rescue ring on the memorial. Some said it was a tasteless gesture but we were reminded that it is what he would have wanted ...

Of all the 'This didnt seem like a good idea' this must be up there.

If they are alive which I doubt it must be pretty awful sitting in a locked dark can with a few strangers knowing this is the end and you have only a few hours left.

The panic and feeling hopless as there is nothing you can do. There is no plan B.

Watching the others die around you and being the last one alive knowing you will never be found is horrific.

Maybe this will serve as a warning for other people thinking of the same journey.

No, if they don’t get rescued - and who knows, they may be bobbing about on the surface, but…even if they were on the surface, they can’t get out. They’re bolted in. So if they don’t get rescued then their death by suffocation won’t be either quick nor painless. The worst part for them is the knowledge and (limited) time to contemplate their situation.

Sadly I think the inevitable has already happened and they are somewhere on the ocean floor or tangled in the wreck! Even if they are found now, someone’s got to come up with a plan to rescue. 40 hours isn’t a lot of time to get all the equipment needed in place.

It would be too heavy and pull the ship over. Then it would be like the crane and cable scene in ‘The Abyss’.

Someone with more time and less cba can work out the formula of sub weight/pressure/cable width/cable length and do the math.

So 4 rich guys paid £1,000,000 to be locked in a sub the size of a transit van to view the wreck of the Titanic. The Titanic hit bottom around 50 miles from where it went under.The search area for that smaller lighter submersible is several hundred sq miles.Submersibles have no propulsion system,they can only rotate,rise or fall,they are at the mercy of any ocean current.The wreck is only 2.3 miles from the surface but the technology required to get there is equal to you commuting to the moon.That also applies to any rescuers.Put it another way,it's at a depth beyond the working pressure of any military submarine.It appears this submersible is a bit of a "bodge it and scarper" affair,untested parts from Amazon,engineers raising concerns sacked from the project.It doesn't seem to have the most basic feature,a locator beacon on fine monofilament fibre longer than the planned dive depth.

Any rescue vessel and crew has to be at least equal to the vessel being rescued.They are not easy to come by,which is why the US Coastguard is having to wait so long for personnel and kit to get to the area,but at the moment that area is accurate to several hundred sq miles not a specific spot and the rescue requirements are unknown.Not good when the clock is running.

The forward viewport on the missing vessel is only certified to a depth of 1,300 metres.

Titanic lies at almost 3 times that depth at 3,800 metres.

Whilst typing this message feels dreadful, there is some simple maths here.

The oxygen is calculated to run out at 12.08pm. This is 3 hours and 30 minutes away. Even if they found the sub at this second, it's a 2 hour descent to The Titanic (although the sub could be in slightly shallower water, so might take less).

From my understanding, they cannot simply pull the sub up at full speed because of compression bends. So it will take 2 hours to come up again.

We are already 30 minutes over the deadline.

Yes, I came to the same conclusion myself this morning.

That is assuming that the sub provided air to its maximum capacity and that the quoted time was accurate.

Reading a few articles online from experienced divers and captains they suspect the oxygen would not have lasted as long as the time quoted by Ocean gate.

Apparently, the US Navy knew about the sub imploding a few days ago, but didn't go public with it so as prevent disclosure of operational tactics & procedures.

The designer of the sub boasted that he was "breaking rules" with the design, and quoted General McArthur about how people are "remembered for the rules they break" rather than sticking to them.

Engineers have always said that you should never put titanium and carbon-fibre together in a design - both of which were the exact materials the now lost sub was constructed from. It's unfortunate for the rest of those on board that he WILL be remembered for the rules he broke.

The experts make me laugh, most don't understand how pressure works on a vessel or body or even where the greatest change in pressure occurs when leaving the surface.

I'm also amazed that such a huge international effort costing huge sums to search and recover the vessel, but don't see the same interest and sums being spent to find 5 missing climbers on Everest in the last climbing window.

The submersible wasn't "approved" you could say, they all signed some sort of disclosure about potential death, the youngest apparently said he was scared to go, which ok, he could've said no. Ross Kemp was supposed to go down on this "thing" a while back for a documentary but it was deemed unsafe. If I was a billionaire I certainly wouldn't spend 200 odd grand that!!

I'm really not sure if spending immense amounts of money is truly justified, especially in the current financial situation.

Yes, Titanic will always court interest but it also is probably technically a grave site.

The money spent on the Sub mission, the search and the expected recovery could undoubtedly feed many millions of hungry folk around the world.

It is a grave site! You're spot on, we're in the middle of a cost of living crisis. The money could have paid so many people's gas/electric bills and fed them, but hey they were billionaires so I'm guessing to them it just wasn't their problem

Billionaires spending millions to have themselves locked in a bean can for a one way ticket to oblivion, no non billionaire would get into a plane if informed it only had enough fuel to get airborne, then millions are spent trying to find said billionaires when the authorities would of known what happened

"Tbh I'd never be interested in going down what is essentially a very deep graveyard.

There's enough footage available online if you're curious with paying ridiculous sums of money and (as occurred) potentially losing your life just to view a dimly lit wreck.

It shouldn't be a tourist destination to me, but then I kinda feel the same about the WTC Museum.

Totally crossed my mind!! Understood it had been designated as a grave site? Understand the morbid curiosity, but add in the 'visitors' being billionaires (as reported) who could easily afford to build a suitable vessel.. A questionable submarine safety history (as reported) having a 'jolly'??? Call me a conspiracy theorist by all means but there's a lot that doesn't add up.
