If someone asks you "How are you? generally (not just on fab)

Do you answer honestly or sidestep the question?

My go to reply is "I'm fine" even though that us is so far from the truth x

It depends who it is, as to how much i want to burden them if I'm low. Thete are a couple of people that if they catch me at the right time I'll tell them

Hope you are OK Sparkle (echoing M Pickles). From an earlier post it does sound as though things have not been smooth in the past (understatement).

Fine here honestly, just not on top of work.

Carlisle usually

In person, unless it's from someone I know actually gives a shit and has a genuine reason to ask me that question, the answer is "Fine, but why are we doing small talk?"

Random nobodies on here just get a flat "Fine."

When I believe someone is asking me because they're genuinely interested in how I'm feeling there's a proper answer.

I’m with midnight here, there are a very small number of people I would feel ok about sharing the low feelings with. Mostly I’m a “not bad”

Well normally its "I'm good thanks you?" If its someone I don't really know but if it's a close mate I would say "actually... I'm struggling"

I answer honestly.

After the first torrent of existential crises laced with waves of nihilistic dread topped off with whimsical notions that driving into traffic might be my best solution to todays problems...

They never ask twice.

Modern problems, modern solutions.

I feel like when someone asks that question they aren’t looking for a truthful answer so I always just say I’m fine.

When someone asks 'how are you', they seldom want to know.

It can be hard to deflect when you're desperate to tell someone you're feeling shit.

It's the standard greeting in the shops here, never can I help you. Mr literal here had big problems with that one.

For some reason if anyone asks me this I really really hate it. I go out of my way not to answer it like out of extreme stubbornness. I mean.... how are you? I'm fine thanks, how are you? fine thanks, and I fell asleep already. I seem to have a small talk phobia. I just completely ignore the question and ask them a more interesting question.

That’s how I see it. Nobody really want a truthful answer, do they?

I’m pretty shit, do you have a few hours to talk me through it all untill I come out the other side and start talking about normal stuff? That’s what I sometimes want to say.

But saying I’m fine, keeps their day a bit brighter by me not bringing their mood down to mine. You know.

If I'm normally in a good mood then I reply with something other than the usual response.

Saying 'marvellous', 'peachy' or 'superb' are common for me.

Our bio asks for a bit more and to engage us, people who make an effort get a good reply and some have even been told where they might find us when we go to a club. But, generic "hey" messages generally get ignored.

If someone asks me and I think they really want to know? I'll tell them. Sometimes it might be ND waffle!

Most of the time I'm quite closed off so I'll side step and ask them questions - I know I have a real interest in the person if I ask it and I'm there for the good, the bad and the ugly.

I hate small talk, it's really rather dull.

8 didn't realise so many other people have the same mindset as me - if I know someone is being genuine they might get a brief breakdown of what is going on, other than that it's usually, fine thanks, how are you.

My ex best mate and ex wife pretty much destroyed my faith in people caring how I feel.

On here "I'm fine" unless it's a person I've met and feel comfortable with. In general only close friends and family get the reality
