Photo Albums — A Revival?

Gentlemën, Ladiës, Nøn-Binariës and Whateveriës...

We have seen a resurgence of vinyl records as a hark back to 'old school' non-digital media that you can covet and cherish...

However, do you keep classic photo albums? Pictorial printed artefacts of friends, family, self portraits, anthologies of your work, hobbies and projects?

Do you have physically bound albums containing some your treasured photographs or do they all languish in digital format in the forgotten ether?

I've got boxes of photos that I've found over the years or had passed on to me. I love looking through them. I'm just sad that there is now no one around to tell me about the people in them I don't recognise.

My dad passed away 12 years ago and it was only a couple of months ago that I finally got some child hood photos of him as well as photos of his mum (she passed away before I was born and I'm named after her) They mean the world to me

I have these fabulous photo albums of my childhood. When my Grandma was in her late 80’s (a bit dotty) she decided to separate her 1000’s of albums and make photo albums of each grandchild and give them to each of us.

The aforementioned dottieness however meant that she kept forgetting which grandchild she was on. They all start well a few pages of photos of me then the all of sudden we are in my cousin’s teenage years, then my youngest brother as a baby, back to me, having skipped a few years

I think I love them more because they are so random.

Grumpy, an old family album is like a vintage pocket watch: you never really own it but just pass it down the generations.

I think this is very poignant: looking at cherished images of unfamiliar family members who you know mean something to you in some measurable way but you don't have the full information of where exactly they fit into the family tree.

We have a few photo albums. I think it’s really important to take pictures and get them printed out to keep as memories for my kids when they grow up. I loved looking through all the photo albums my parents had when I was younger, getting to see what they were like before I was around and the things they got up to.

I have boxes of photo albums in the loft. And my wife's family, some going back to Jamaica. Baby shoes, wedding and christening dresses in old suitcases they brought with them. My daughters are the end of that line.

I don't keep much memorabilia for myself. A few things. My panda from when I was a baby. A few pics in a shoe box, couple of bits of Jewellery, Zippo lighter my grandad gave me. A few letters and postcards from times when girlfriends would write, in purple ink and seal with a kiss . Things I associate with meaningful memories.

Thank you for this endearing insight. You must have been a 'nouvelle kitten' when you were given these pictorial photographs of remembrance?

Dotty grandmothers make for poor archivists but for rich memories.

We have a wedding album, our children's annual school photos and some old photo albums from a few years ago. We do have mostly digital photos these days though.

I would love to see a revival of photo albums as I fear that future generations will miss out on the great deal of pleasure that they have bought us, many a giggle and a few tears over the years.

When my dad died my stepmum deleted his Facebook account. Sadly that was where he'd put every photo for over a decade, so I have very few photos of him in later life. While our relationship was complicated and stressful, I find it a huge shame that I have so few physical keepsakes.

I do post photos online and I do store them electronically, but those that have sentimental value I also tend to print. Sometimes I frame them, sometimes I just keep them in a box. I'm not great on organising into albums but maybe one day I'll get round to it.

As i have been a keen amateur since my early teens, i have now got 10's of 1000's of pics. The vast majority of which were taken on slide film up until 2001. In 2001 i bought my first digital camera and have been completely digital ever since then.

All the slide pics that i took before then i converted to digital images using a Nikon slide scanner, which i have still got.

I regularly look at my old pics because sometimes it reinforces the need to go back and retake a pic. I'm also the custodian of all of my mum and dads pics, along with all of thier mum and dads pics. A big responsibility for future generations of my family.

I was an avid photographer in pre-digital days and have many albums from family holidays, days out, and just daily life. Post-digital the galleries on my computer system contain thousands of pictures. I also have a few albums inherited from my parents that contain pictures going back to when my dad bought a box camera while doing his national service (not a cheap hobby at that time I should think!).

I suppose that in years to come I may find joy in looking through all these photos again. At the moment everything is too raw with the losses I have suffered over the last several years, I feel it hard enough with some of the photos I have on the mantelpiece and walls in the house (and no, I'm not going to take them down, that would be even worse), so the albums and the computer galleries remain closed for the present.

There is something wondrous about peering into an old family photo, with the album on your lap and a pondering reflective smile on your face. You can't replicate that experience from a smartphone. x

I do a big print of our photos every couple of years. I have got a lot in albums, but also in a box as I ran out of albums. I really need to buy some more but never seem to get round to it.

I have a lot of albums on Facebook too that the kids love looking through. I tend to do a new one every year and for special occasions

Not really, I think I’ve just always loved having actual photos. Plus I loved how funny they were when you didn’t know what to expect, couldn’t take ten of the same thing with an iPhone to get a good one

My grandad had an old suitcase full of old pics, it was a joy to go through them. Precious memories
