we fly quite frequently out of necessity and note that different airlines have different weight restrictions and excess luggage charges on baggage that goes over the limit. I realise that it is necessary to have weight restrictions but would it not be fairer if your baggage weight and your personal weight were not combined. Therefore someone who is 10 stone can carry extra weight in their luggage to someone who is 15 stone ?

The fatter person will have larger and therefore heavier clothes though.

I try to only take what I can personally carry. If people did that then the it should all balance out.

think its to do with the amount of fuel the plane carries ..was a recent flight going to Oslo where the pilot asked for 4 passengers to get off the plane on the tarmac as they had gone overweight .. no one volunteered so he offered them £100 each to get off .. still no one got off so the passengers had to have a whip round and they ended paying the 4 passengers £200 each to get off and catch the next plane out

In the main it is the low cost carriers or holiday charter carriers that charge for baggage.

Some mainline carriers are now adopting low cost models for inter european flights, so the cheaper the ticket, the more restrictions will be placed on its purchase.

Many mainline carriers have suffered financially over the past few years whilst the profits of the low cost carriers have (in the main) soared.

There have been a couple of low costs that have gone to the wall, but that was down to poor management and/or board strategy than the effectiveness of the business model as a whole.

Baggage charges will continue to be an ongoing issue as they provide a revenue stream for the carriers who discount the price of their seats.

The reason why they don't charge on weight I would imagine is a discrimination issue and I am sure if they thought they could get away with it they would do just that !

Airlines have been criticised and discrimination explored when they have sold larger people two seats. Although I am not sure if they get double baggage allowance for having paid for two seats.

i do understand what you mean but I dont think that that is discrimination as I have personally had to sit through a transatlantic flight with the guy next to me sitting on half my seat due to his size and it was not a pleasant flight. I think some things are fact rather than discrimination.

Because then people at the heavier end of the scale would then say 'we have to pay for our luggage and these lighter people didn't'

Remember this is not just a matter of weight - there are a lot of tall guys for example that weigh 100 kilos or more just thru the size of their frame

Luggage is also an area where an airline may lose revenue because if they allowed it for free they could not carry as much cargo.

Many airlines make as much (if not more) money in what they term 'belly freight' as they do in passenger ticket fees.

That is why you sometimes see planes with 300 seats of which 200 are empty.

You may think 'how is this making money ?'

The answer is under your feet in the cargo hold.

but surely the weight of the plane determines how much fuel it has to carry and therefore impacts on the costs of the flight to the airline. So it would seem a reasonable practice that each and every passenger was allowed the same weight allowance

Dwarfs fly free if they can squeeze into the overhead lockers

Skinnies can fly free if Seven of them can squeeze into the rear toilet of a Boeing 737....

Seems fair to me and I've half a mind to get onto Flybe about it in the morning.

same with the cabin bags - how do they know whose are 2 kilos and whose are 10 ? in general they don't

it is only on a low cost flight if you have a bulky bag that it may be weighed or sized

so some weights are variable and the pilots allow for that

what can be determined is the empty weight of the plane, the weight of the fuel, the weight of the cargo and the weight of the checked bags

fuel incidentally is measured in lbs as well as litres or gallons in aviation terms

getting back to your initial comment, checked bags are an easily identified source of revenue for those airlines that discount seat prices

so like it or not, that business model is here to stay.

try looking at mainline airlines rather than low cost - they are far more lenient with baggage allowances and it sometimes works out cheaper than you may think to travel with them

Have you seen the information on the NE? The argument is quite compelling. It's also interesting how Manchester is now positioning itself as a hub airport and selling itself to London customers. Transport is one of my interests.

Apologies freelove I promise I will go to bed after this but in terms of manchester airport, their owners MAG (manchester airport group) have recently bought stansted as part of the break up of baa. MAG which is a consortium of the 10 local councils that make up greater manchester also owns manchester, humberside, east midlands and bournemouth airports so now it has stansted it looks like we may have taken apart 1 monopoly whilst setting course to create a second. The other interesting fact is that MAGs chief commercial officer is ex Ryanair. And who is Stansteds biggest operator? Yup you guessed it !

Airport ownership is more complex than people realise. Who owns Gatwick? Most people are surprised when I tell them it's a Nigerian man - Adebayo Ogunlesi.

MAG will face being broken up if their expansion plans continue.

When me & the missus went to Barcelona last year, her suitcase was slightly over while mine was under. Result was we had to open both cases and distribute things more evenly infront of a long queue of disgruntled passengers

The combined weight was obviously still the same

all i want is to be able to carry 55kg of duty free with my 45 kilo frame if the guy next to me weighs 80 kilos and carrys 20 kilos of luggage on .. thought it was quite reasonable !

Duty Free always confuses me on the weight thing. If you buy it at the airport then your bags have already been weighed and checked in. Then you get all these heavy bottles that you carry onto the aeroplane, where you are not allowed to have glass.
