The most impressive thing about Khawaja's innings was the fact he was clearly a bit chilly throughout. He tried without the jumper today but it soon went back on.

Would be interested in seeing how Ben would set the field for that situation and whether he'd declare early or go a little longer. I guess it would depend on the pitch

Manchester-ish

I think a lead between 270 and 300 would make a tempting target for the Aussies to go for the win rather than conserve wickets and play out the draw. So maybe a declaration around tea (or just after lunch the rate Roooooooot is scoring)

The future of BazBall is precariously positioned.

I am firmly behind the concept and fully believe in this new brand of exciting cricket.

But make no mistake, if England lose then I stalk be asking serious questions about this style of play.

Fantastic day of test cricket. I think England just have the edge due to getting the wickets of Smith and Labuschagne. A couple of early wickets tomorrow and it's definitely theirs as Australia don't bat as deep.

All to play for tomorrow, bit of damp in the air early on might be just what we need, give us a chance to nip a couple out. 2nd new ball might end up being crucial too. Can you imagine the atmosphere, Aus need 30 to win, we need 2 wickets, Jimmy & Broady steaming in with a new ball, with The Hollies roaring them on. Would be magical!

wolverhampton

Just got back from Edgbaston, what an absorbing day of test cricket. The game ebbed and flowed and Stokes captaincy is so left field that it’s refreshing to see!

Disappointed that I can’t get a ticket for tomorrow, day five of an Ashes test match with a dodgy weather forecast is sold out!

I really hope there's play at 2pm. Been a captivating test match so far.

7 overs until the second new ball. Broady chomping at the bit to get hold of it. A lot of drama still to come, I love it!!

"The future of BazBall is precariously positioned.

I am firmly behind the concept and fully believe in this new brand of exciting cricket.

But make no mistake, if England lose then I stalk be asking serious questions about this style of play."

DISGRACE.

BAZBALL MUST GO.

Friday was perfect for batting and to declare with Root on fire ably supported by Robinson, they could have added another 100. A 500 score instead of 395 would've put more pressure on them.

Add to that, not playing your best WK and missing stumpings, dropping catches, plus a crucial no ball. Apart from Head on day 1, I don't remember them spilling anything.

That's why they're no. 1 test team.

Bazball has been exciting but the aussies showed that despite being behind all match that digging in like Khawaja did, got the victory.

Shoehorning Bairstow in reminds me of old England managers trying to pack a midfield of Lampard, Gerrard and scholes when one has to miss out for the good of the team.

Totally agree with your comments - Do you think with Mowen probably not going to play in next game they’ll play root as the spinner and bring in Foakes !!

It's either that or go for Will Jacks or some other unproven spinner.

Fact is they need to make room for Foakes somehow. Also, Woakes is excellent at Lords so I'd bring both him and Wood for there and give Jimmy and Robinson a rest until headingley when they will both be required up there due to it traditionally a seamers pitch.

I’d keep Jimmy in for Lords, he’s still an incredible bowler. He didn’t bowl badly at Edgbaston he was just slightly undercooked. He’s a rhythm bowler and his recent injury will have cost him valuable game time.

Edgbaston will have done him some good as he got some overs under his belt so as the GOAT and leading wicket taker at Lords (117 and counting) he must play.

Wood for Broad would be my change, Broad looked dead on his feet at the close yesterday and Robinson is the sort of factory floor bowler who will bowl several overs without flagging in the same way that Matthew Hoggard used to. That leaves Wood to bowl short hostile spells of quick and intimidating bowling.

The bowling line up is an interesting conundrum. The good thing about Bazball for battinis a bit of a nightmare for bowling because they get the runs quickly but the bowlers then spend ages out in the middle toiling away which isn't ideal for your 40 and 36 year old front line bowlers and out of retirement spin bowler. Not quite sure what the solution is though

Rotation I guess. Woakes, Woods and Potts could all come in.

"Rehan Ahmed has been added to the squad for the second test, no other changes"

Presumably as cover for Moeen, he’s been in poor form for his county Leicestershire so if he gets picked it would be a massive gamble. The Aussies would target him which, given his youth/lack of experience could ruin his career and wreck our chances of regaining the Ashes.

There's more than enough in this squad to rotate and replenish. Had a feeling theyd hold off from recalling Foakes.

Ben Stokes (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
