If you had a friend who spoke as negatively about you as you did yourself, how long would you be friends with them for?

If you're gonna use logic, I'm not playing.

They’d probably be my best friend. Finally someone who gets me.

Mine are my 2 best friends, when I'm acting the twat/in the wrong they tell me, and I love that about them. It's never malicious, and I always reacted more to constructive criticism than positive reinforcement.

It would really depend on the intention behind the negativity and if they offer the same kind of help that I strive to give myself.

This is often a blanket statement to say that we should be our own best friend first and foremost but without that negative self talk we can easily fall into a trap of saying everything is ok and we are doing just fine.

Understanding negative talk and the reasons behind it means that we are subconsciously identifying where we feel we can do better. The same that that a good friend with good intentions can do.

We can choose what we do with that information. To act upon it or not. Or even try to block out it by losing a friend with our best interests at heart

That's an interesting question.

On the one hand, the brutal honesty would be nice... You know they'd never bullshit you, or take it easy on you.

But on the whole the sheer amount of negativity and disparaging comments would become wearing very quickly.

I would think they are a dick.

It's better they say it to my face rather than behind my back

We wouldn’t be friends. My friends are the ones that make me realise I’m horrible to myself.

I realised this during lockdown so I make a promise to myself to look after myself, I picked out a ring and wear it to remember

Now I make dates for myself to enjoy, wether that’s a long soak in a bath or just some me time

Seemed to help

I would drop contact but I can't do that with my inner voice.

I did. Infact she was often worse. I see her far less these days.

I'd cut them off immediately, then hide in my room and cry, probably.

We're always the most unkind to ourselves, that's a basic tenant that took me a long time to realise and accept.

Kindness, to all those around you is remarkably helpful, but to yourself, it can be life changing.

Negative self talk is an awful thing, especially when we know the most hurtful buttons to press without thinking.
